Why does this give me the feel of a mid 2000s Shogun or Landcruiser Prado?

It certainly looks neither good, modern or like a Kia

Is this a Kia, or a sub-brand, kind of like Cupra with Seat? I don't see any Kia branding anywhere.

Probably because it's just a facelift of the existing Mohave/Borrego that dates back to 2008.

It's still a Kia. Recall they did something similar with the Equus and original Genesis sedans even though they were Hyundais.

The pre-facelift Mohave also had no Kia badges:

Imho they should add the 3.0 liter V6 Diesel engine into the Hyundai Palisade :)
