What was so hard about producing this? Did they really need to jam a garish chrome mess over top?

The production model looks like a face on a face.

I think the best European designs are coming from Kia.

I'd agree that the best Germanic designs are from Kia, given how half of the team from VAG 15 years ago (when the cars looked way better) are now over there ;)

Italian and especially the quirky/different French (like them or not) are rather different to a typical German design...

There is an interesting article in Xataka where this car is compared to its main competitors.

https://www.xataka.com/vehiculos/nue...quien-da-papel

Simply put, this car does not stand out in any respect. Just playing safe while all others do have a feature that distinguish them from the rest. Not what you would expect from MB.

Oh, my comments were meant fairly seriously, sadly enough.

VW had their design talent lured away, and BMW had their engineering lured away.

I'm struggling to think of reasons of why MBs became so... bleh. They've always been relatively staid from a design perspective, but they were elegant, well crafted, and had impeccable engineering.

The shift to focusing on blinged-out interiors and a more superficially appealing driving experience has not been for the better, IMHO, although I'm it sells them a ton of cars. But where did the manufacturer that put out the legendary cars of the 1970s and 80s and early 1990s go? Perhaps swallowed whole by the gigantic three-pointed star they're sticking on everything now...

I think this looks great. Except for the face. They tried to jam a traditional Mercedes bar grille in there? Typically beautiful interior. Clean lines the rest of the way back.

I think the doomed sales predictions here are funny. How much does any luxury car stand out in its segment these days? Is a C-Class an obvious/overwhelming buy over a 3 Series or A4?

This will sell on the badge and by looking futuristic enough, but not too weird.

Also, I think this version fixes 80% of the problems with the grille:

Is anyone predicting poor sales? I think there's a difference btw saying, "This car is kind of boring, especially coming from one the world's premier car manufacturers" and, "This car isn't going to sell."

I actually imagine it'll sell pretty well for its segment.

Then the swanky Audi and inevitably the sexy Porsche arrive and sales collapse.

Maybe for Tesla. MB will probably be fine. When you think about the segments they don't do well in (at least in the US), it's not like anybody is doing much better....
