I was expecting to dislike the enormous grille, and yep, it looks awful. Cartoonish and vulgar. The rest of the car is quite nice.

Here it is with a tasteful frontclip from the 8 Series (what it should have been).
Looks vastly better.

This is way past a caricature IMO.
I absolutely agree; And, tbh. the grille is the smaller problem for me - it could be easily rectified with a facelift, or even an aftermarket bumper (not that it isn't absolutely horrible looking);
But the general lack of BMW feel, especially in the side view, with a generic Coupe shape, that could be anything from Infiniti or Genesis, with a C-pillar that is a far removed from any BMW DNA as possible; And all that, without looking any more modern, elegant or expensive than the previous generation, as the side by side comparison beautifully shows.

In my eyes, this is the worst and weakest new BMW design so far, and some of the recent cars (X7, 1 series, 2 series GC) already set the bar pretty low

Well, TBH it isn't that much different from the 8-series:

IMO the 8-series is definitely the best BMW that came out in recent years and 4-series isn't that far off, despite the messy front. The worst for me is that lip area surrounding the grill on M-sport model, the grill itself surprisingly isn't all that bad, especially when blacked out.
There are plenty of really ugly BMWs right now (1-series,2GC, X6), but for me this one is quite ok.

The 8 series IMO does not really look like a BMW to mr, it has to me form certain angles a Mustang feel. The profile is not unattractive, just rather anonymous looking, it could be a Lexus, Infiniti or Genesis as well. BMW had certain elements, like the double kidneys (in a sane size,and also not connected to look like a Kia on their recent EVs), the double headlights, the hofmeister kink or even that crease along the door handles, that visually breaks up the side view and gave some visual length and elegance to most designs (the 8 series thus looks a bit "heavy" form the side); Very little of that DNA is here (or in the 8 series, and even less in cars like the new 1 or 2 sreies); This is just generic (again, not ugly, generic) from most angles, with a grotesque front end and a general feel of "plastic" to most of it's detailing.

How did they not notice that this out of place front end, that looks like it got mangled by a Nissan, completely ruins what would have been an alright looking car? At least it’ll make it so I can get the older style 4-series on the cheap.
