Maserati is building a Mercedes SL rival, complete with folding metal roof. The Italian brand is replacing its Coup/Spyder twins with two more distinct models each with different wheelbases: this drop-top two-seater is the shorter of the two.

...

The Spyder should be launched in mid-2006, with the Coup a few months earlier, although they were due to arrive in early 2005. The original Italdesign-Giugiaro styling was dumped as too conservative; the switch to a new Pininfarina design knocked the project back by 18 months.

The Spyder will be a strict two-seater with stowage space behind the seats, while the Coup version should have a lot more rear legroom than the current model, with Maserati proclaiming the car to be a full four-seater instead of the current 2+2.

Exact engine details are still scarce, although it will run a V8 larger than the Ferrari F430s 4.3-litre unit, pumping out between 430-450bhp. The Quattroportes double-wishbone suspension with adaptive damping will be tweaked to give the car a more sporting slant.

That grey rendering looks great! The grille and headlights are a good variant of the Quattroporte ones, and with a suitably long bonnet.

The orange rendering looks a bit stodgy though, like a two-door sedan. Could look a bit more sporty.

As it is, the spy shots seem to show a car with a very sloping character line on the side, and a much wedgier profile than the current one or the renderings - this thing should be less GT and more sports car, like the DB9 or some such.

Er come to think of it, the contours of the side remind me of the Porsche 928..

The current Maserati coupe and spyder beg the question, is the Ferrari's 80 grand premium worth it? It's good to see that these will do it again. If you ask me the don't look quite as amazing as the current ones though.

I think the hatchback is to hide the roof mechanism of the spyder version
