Yikes. After seeing the Pontiac version, the Toyota is truly awful.

I wasn't exactly expecting to be blown away but I really, really don't like it. I won't bother detailing the reasons why, but I can point to the awful DLO as a particularly egregious offender.

And the face... so bland!

The Leno-chinned Matrix is half an inch longer and half an inch shorter than the model it replaces. The large rear quarter windows, one of the traits that distinguished the Matrix from its Pontiac Vibe twin, are gone in favor of small glass slits that form a wraparound backlite with the tailgate. The interior is very much an evolution of the current Matrix, with the most notable change being a square cluster-within-the-cluster for the fuel and temperature gauges.

Performance-wise, Matrix parallels the Corolla, with both 1.8 and 2.4-liter models available. AWD remains available on automatic 2.4-liter models. As with the Corolla, the highline XRS model has lost its high-revving 1.8-liter VVTL-i engine and six-speed manual in favor of a torquier 2.4-liter with a five-speed.

Rear 3/4 view really highlights the utter incoherence of this design. It's getting worse and worse for me..

I do kinda like it, actually, but that rear quarter window is a bit too... odd for my liking. It looks more hatch-like inside and out now, too, while the 1st gen was more wagon-like. Kinda wish Toyota didn't make it to blatant that this is a mutilated Auris on the outside (because I do like the interior a lot).

*edit*
I just realized, it has quite a damning resemblance to the SX4...

the side profile is pretty much the same until you get to the c pillar. then it looks like they attached an sx4 to it.

um, wow. the corolla is nice if underwhelming, but this is a true dissapointment. the front would have been fine if the grille was a bit higher, but bigger changes would be needed to fix the side. the unfinished look of the DLO and strange side surfacing show true design ineptitude...the inside looks exactly the same as in the current car, so it's a dissapointment there, too, to an extent.
