As weird and poitless as the idea seems in paper, i am totally in for it. Why not? The true Mini heritage is totally perverted by now anyway.

I've heard that they are planning to do a pickup version. Obviously for just one particular country that is.

Sorry, this is a stupid idea.. totally agree. But isn't this on the same platform as the Countryman, which is still smaller thank a VW Golf?? I would never buy one and I think it looks ridiculous.. But lets put things in perspective. Mini's offering a small car with lots of utility, but I guess you could put the back seats down in any hatchback so I don't really see the point of this.

And as far as being perverted from its heritage, mini has made several versions of the cooper (previous to BMW ownership) including vans, trucks, etc..

BMW created an utterly unsustainable business model for Mini when it did the stand alone dealer thing. Doing that means Mini has to be a "full line" brand and once the novelty of the variations wears off, Mini will be left with a "now what?" conundrum. Putting the Mini into BMW dealers would have radically reduced start up, would not have forced having to have a Mini, a cabrio, a coupe, now a second coupe coming, countryman, clubman, vanman, pickupman, and God knows what else. Furthermore, BMW could have leveraged the Triumph name to create a TR4/TR6 roadster as well as a Triumph sedan (Dolomite? Stag?) to market instead of the wrong-for-NA 1 series.

Its a shame you werent one of the decision makers at BMW when this flawed product plan was jumbled together. Could have lots of £££££ and the dilution of an iconic brand.

This rumor has been floating around for sometime. Wouldnt be much success in the US where larger trucks are preferred and offered with good discounts. Just what the we need, a wrong wheel drive pickup truck. There lies my beef with Mini; the WORST drivetrain layout; and who do we owe this to?

Sometimes I wonder if this is all just a big joke for BMW who spent an entire generation mucking up their linkup; but has really turned things around nicely.
