IMO the reason is similar why there are no real performance versions of teh Boxster/Cayman: because that would make the 911 redundant for everyone bar trophy wife hunters. And a small well engineered car would basically do teh smae to the BOxster....

Piech would say that. Mulally would think outside the box. The Cayman if given the 911's power would eat it alive because even with all the electrocrap and a rear track three feet wider than the front, the 911 is still a piece of work to drive whereas a normal idiot can drive the Cayman like the Stig. A Porsche "Miata" let's call it a 922 would put Porsche where it should be: the go to sportscar brand rather than trying to compete with Ferrari. The "922" could produce a Porsche "370Z" let's call it the 944. Essentially a coupe and roadster built off one platform. Let's stretch the 944 and make it a 4 place coupe and call it the 966 giving Porsche what it doesn't have: a BMW 6 competitor. You couldn't have said it better. Porsche is ok with prostituting its name for sales witness the Cayenne, Panamera, and whatever the Porsche Q5 winds up being called.
