New Lexus GS Sedan Gets Hybrid Power
January 20, 2005
Summary: Toyota's upscale Lexus subsidiary is looking forward to a busy April, in which it will put one new gas-electric hybrid on sale and unveil another.
Full story: Toyota is planning to display its latest gas-electric hybrid, the Lexus GS 450 sedan, at the New York International Auto Show in April. The new car is based on the Lexus GS sedan, and will share hybrid parts with the forthcoming Lexus RX 400h hybrid sport-utility vehicle, which goes on sale April 15.
A Lexus spokesperson said the GS 450, like the RX 400h, will use hybrid technology to enhance performance; i.e., it will use electric motors to augment the power of the engine. Toyota has not yet announced which of its V6 power plants would go into production in the GS 450, but the spokesperson said the RX 400h's six-cylinder engine is a leading candidate.
What this means to you: Lexus is taking a financial gamble with its first hybrids, basing them on existing models and not creating stand-alone nameplates such as the successful Prius hybrid sedan from parent automaker Toyota. Will the new hybrids sell?

A V8 kinda takes away of "fuel efficient" when you have 2 extra motors giving you more power. I think Lexus will have short term success with these hybrids. It's the diesel hybrids from Germany that will top the cake.

Cozz does know that Toyota is first company selling diesel-hybrids...
To matters on hand, v6 is MUCH better solution. Basically what you get is an V8 performance at less than V6 mpg. You will never be able to justify powerful hybrid just based on saving fuel - since fuel is still very cheap in the US, it will take you more than 100,000 to get into the savings.
With V6+Hybrid, you get something like instant supercharger, thats ready from 0 to 6,000 rpm and yet you get 30sh mpg in city and 20ish on highway (10 mpg better than before)... Plus, you pollute less than ULEV Camry... GS450h should be well faster than GS430, at about the same price... and get 15mg better...
Whats not there to like?
Diesel hybrid will be better but will cost some +3k on top of petrol diesel and still pollute quite more and have none of the smoothnes of petrol powered engine... Well, maybe it will have it 5 years from now, who knows...

Too bad the diesel hybrid will come from the Germans to the US.
Also, you haven't read anything about them new diesels. The E-class diesel is just as smooth as it's gas partner, even the Jeep Liberty reviews say it's a smooth motor. I haven't read anything that sais Toyota has smooth diesel motors though. I'll keep my eyes open.
