Some sketches have been released some time ago from the designdepartment from BMW. But now Autocar claims they could be from the rumoured BMW Supercar.

BMW could be gearing up to launch a new flagship car the Z9. These official renderings created by BMWs Californian styling studio were released at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the beginning of January.
Dubbed the California Spyder concept, BMWs Designworks studio says the concept would have a folding carbonfibre roof and be powered by the 700bhp V10 engine that powers the BMW-Williams F1 car.
At first glance these sketches might look like a flight of conceptual fancy, but BMW bosses have already admitted that a flagship project is on the drawing board. It would almost certainly be powered by the M5s V10 and could be based on a development of the Z8s aluminium chassis.
Its likely that this is the supercar project that a senior BMW figure mentioned at a meeting of financial analysts last July. The official said that BMW was considering building such a car, and that it was closely monitoring the market and moves from rival car makers.
When Autocar attempted to clarify the surprise comments, a senior BMW spokesman played down the possibility of an imminent launch. He hinted that the project could be rendered pointless by the arrival of the M6 and M6 CSL.
The studio computer renderings pictured here show a big, elegant machine that takes the Z4s flame-surfaced looks and refines them considerably. The sketch that shows the Spyder with doors open reveals the folding hard-top under the boot lid. The smaller rendering shows how the car could look in coup mode with the roof erected

I wonder if it will have the same fate the Z8 had.

Naga never said BMW couldn't TRY and sell them, he meant that people wouldn't BUY them. I don't see BMW touting sales figures of the 760 (likely because they aren't good enough to mention), and the Z8 was an unabashed flop.

What ever happened to that small aluminum coupe thing that was running around in a pack of 5er mules a year or so ago?

I remember that, was it rumored to be the next Z4-coupe or the 1er 2-door?

And they both sell very well.
I really like this idea, but I would like to see it released when there is enough demand for it - they have to research the market intensively to make sure when to release the car - don't just copy MB and Ferrari and just release it when they release it.

I would 100% buy a Z9 for X-more over an M6 CSL... the M6 isnt sexy, its a 6 Series with a Big engine..
I prefer my supercars to be unique models. Not just performance versions of something cheaper. (although the 911 Turbo is one of my favorite cars.. ha) Still, I much more prefer unique models.

I think if BMW builds a really emotional and timeless looking design with out of this world performance figures then yeah it'd be a success. It would have to be light, driver oriented, give a lot of feel, have right driving position. I mean there are lot of things on that checklist and I won't bother posting all of them. Nevertheless I'd like to see Z9 kick Carrera GT and SLR's butt.

I think the only car today that compares with the Carrera GT is the Enzo, and if porsche made a more race-derived version of the Carrera GT, I think it'd run with the number for number with the Enzo, but then again this about BMW's new supposed supercar

Besides, this newest drawing gives the car a front engine layout, with a droptop, which will be heavy, I expect this car, if they do deside to go ahead with it, to be like a SL65

One of the other members commented that this was drawn by a design student, and is not necessarily a production ready design.

They can't afford to do another SL fighter. 6 series does that already. M6 Convertible could easily compete with SL55-65.

They could get away with it if they made it lightweight, and very limited.
A V12 version of the M5's engine wouldnt hurt either; 6 liters, 600hp.
