These sketches look quite good. Reminds me of a Jeep concept (can't remember the name)
Shame the actual product doesn't quite have the same exadurated lines as this sketch!

Frankly I'm not impressed, I've seen way better renders from amateurs online than I have from the automakers themselves.

hmmm i honestly think these renders are brilliant. i bet no one on this site could match the talent of Mr leclercq. The only render thats not top stuff is the top render of the front. The rest are fantastic. Mr Burns u must realise these guys work at the very top. I cant believe you could crit such masterpieces???

There are many young amateurs that can render rings around those. the only one that I would say is good is the second one (rear shot). The rest look like cartoons and the first one is just terrible.
This is a good render:
http://husseindesign.deviantar...60568
and
http://husseindesign.deviantar...38447
dude!! so what if it's not photorealistic??? the design itself is more important... As long as he is able to get his ideas across to the viewer.
This is'nt only about how well you can draw or render.. It's about how good your designs are regardless of whether it may look unrealistic or not

Mr. Burns
09-27-2007, 10:53 AM
Well he didn't come up with the design all by himself, he directed a team of many talented designers, and engineers and marketing influenced as well. And I was criticizing the renders alone, for a guy at his level, the renders should be much better. Getting ideas across is much much easier than selling those ideas.

The thing is i really cant see anything wrong with the renders? Please post some renders from other designers with greater quality renders to prove your statements. We can then compare

I already did!
check out:
http://schaltkreis.deviantart.com/
http://husseindesign.deviantart.com/
http://emrehusmen.deviantart.com/
any of these guys have more impressive works than both the Audi designer and the BMW designer.
btw here's an even worse render done by a top Suzuki designer:

All I'm saying is that for top designers who have completed design school and have tons of experience, the renders are not at all impressive, especially when compared to some very young people with no experience and no design education (like the ones I posted).

yuck! the render quality is good but the designs are really ugly. Look lol im just defending the BMW designer cos i really believe IMO that his renders are great
ew that suzuki is disgusting !
Poor design.
haha lets just agree to disagree :-)
The BMW designer's aren't bad (save for the first one), but they're not very good either.

burns, i think you need to remember that these guys are pros...they have dead lines to meet(especially with a concept car thats due in 6 months or so) and they don't really have time to sit down and do the best render in the world, you make a sketch, splash it with color and move on to the next idea...

Have you seen the top 5 pro sketches in the mazda design challenge facebook group? Those are also very quick sketches, yet for the most part they look much better than these.
Here's an example (I took this screenshot for a forum elsewhere but it can work here):

I don't know burns. I kinda think they sat down took time out for those...
they are impressive and if they did do them in a short amount of time then kudos to them...they are better than the first X6 render...
btw that suzuki looks horrible, both the sketch and the render...

Mr. Burns

well think about it, the mazda guys had 5 days to consult with the entrant and do 3 renders of their concept. That's pretty much a render/day. So they were rushed as well.

Husseindesign isn't a fair choice because he is almost out of design school and is soon to start a 3 month internship at BMW
but yes I admit...he has always been a beast at rendering but has sinced improved his photorealism

Hussein Design is just starting at design school, he won his internship at BMW from a magazine contest. And why wouldn't he be a fair choice? All the mazda guys and the BMW guy went to design school and had internships as well.

@Mr. Burns: He did make it himself. Please don't make untrue statements.

Moreover, Pierre Leclercq has a lot of working experience, a big knowledge about technical issues, and graduated from a Design school. Hussein is just starting off..
Oh my god, it's really scary how Hussein is worshipped by half the world ;-) :-) Go once to Pforzheim and have a look at the student's works. You'll forget him :)

btw: welcome to the Mac OS X Leopard club ;-)

I had the chance to discuss with Tim Kozub ( a famous car designer from General Motors)

And I can tell you the most important things he told me:
it equally important to have good ideas, and be able to draw them as well. He says the flashier the sketch, the more you get noticed.

3 Most important things

1.) Drawing talent (practice, practice, practice)
2.) Verbal and written ability to communicate your design
3.) Dealing with ambiguity / Rolling with the punches

I hope it can help you :)
