The Silvia nameplate dates back to 1964, and the car in its varying iterations remained in production until the 2002 model year, when the final Silvia (S15) fell victim to platform consolidation as Nissan sought to reverse its sagging fortunes. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Nostalgia for the car remains, however, and amid a renaissance of Nissan sports cars (with the successful reincarnations of both the Z and GT-R models) enthusiasts remain hopeful that Nissan will seek to bring back the Silvia. With the Z growing more expensive and consequently slipping from the reach of many younger buyers, an affordable rear wheel drive coupe could slot nicely into the automakerís existing lineup, boosting the brandís appeal to young buyers and dominating the entry-level performance scene with sex appeal and a pedigree unmatched in the segment. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Your task is to design the next generation Nissan Silvia. It must be a worthy successor to generations of Silvias, carrying a legacy of affordable performance, aggressive style, and sharp handling for which the car is known in enthusiast circles. However, you must be careful to differentiate the car from Nissanís other sports car offerings, imbuing it with a character all its own in a way that doesnít infringe upon the territory of the more expensive models.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Best of luck designers! This contest will end on January 26. <o:p></o:p>

I'll rock the Silvia after i've bust out my Elise!

Both will be created rather quickly as I am due to fly to Spain Thursday. I may not come back!! And on that Bombshell...

Thanks guys, and thanks to Dom for posting it.

I've always wanted a new Nissan Silvia design, and it's pretty challenging, so have fun.

TIDBIT: Those who can evoke a little S13 in their design have a higher chance of big votes from me!

I wanted to do something ground-breaking for this contest, and that's exactly what I've done. Big 'S' logo, massive vents, slit headlights and tuner-like spoiler set it apart from other Nissan sports cars. On sale now, all over the world.

Great! I'll see if I can sketch one up. After all, the Silvia [ 240SX in the US] used to be my favorite car.

A new generation of Silvia has returned. In 2010 the 370Z's baby brother will be unleashed. More radical than its bigger brothe, the 2010 Silvia features a similar face to the 370Z, however with more zest. The front features more intakes and freshly styled lights reminiscent of the 370Z's. LEDs are used for both the front and rear lights . Day lights run at the bottom of the bumper up front, covered in a curved plastic that shields the daylights from stones and debris. The hood features a hump similar to the 370Z's. On top you get a full panaramic roof with a centrally mounted scoop that runs from the middle of the roof down to the boot lid and it comes in black and optional carbon fibre. The rear features a sporty split spoiler that can be folded away at low speeds. The side character line swoops up over the rear wheel arch to give a unique and distinct look. Twin centrally mounted pipes give a tastefull aggressive look at the rear and a diffuser is fitted. The new Silvia is RWD making it plenty fun to drive. Its interior is inspired by the R35 GTR. A 7-Speed Dual clutch gearbox is optional whilst a 6 speed manual is standard. LSD is also standard. Nissan states the the new Silvia is aimed at the younger generation who are looking for a radical sports coupe that is both easy and fun to drive and great to live with as an every day car. Its positioned under its more mature brother the 370Z. A brand new 2.0 Turbo sits under the hood and produces 182kW. Please welcome the new Nissan Silvia

Cosworth: I love your drawings man, like seriously, I got a massive affection for them. I have no idea why, but you must know that you are lacking some of the proper practice, but you still try, and I admire tenacity alot, and so I have to say, as hard as it is to translate what it is, I love it bro. I really do. It does me some good to say that too, cause I actually DO love it. Sound's weird eh? :grintoothless:

MRF: Brilliant man, but I was hoping for something a little bit more forward from you. I love the lights, but you need to work on those wheels buddy. Try to get your ecipses right. You got a really good balance and forward momentum, and the shading and reflections are amazing. Nice work as ALWAYS. ;)

Blow my mind away why don't you!

That's awesome! I love the S13 style front end! ;)

But also, I really dig the spoiler idea, and the side view with the exception of the wheels actually looks professional. Man I just don't know what to say... just stunning buddy. Really really nice work! :)

And about the grill, yeah S13, I didn't really want a Current Nissan style grill, not noticeable enough if you know what I mean. Thanks again

MRF! WOW! The look is WOW! :bows::bananadance::dancebob: Did I say wow yet?

Thanks man , didnt expect such a response :)
Also to Kramer, THANKS !

Steve , the wheels are pretty good on this one? They're free hand drawings so obviously arent perfect ellipses.

Comments so far (im giving marks outta ten now)

Cosworth - That huge S logo has to go man, it looks very cheesy and cheap. Like the intakes , a more fluid intergration of them as well as the lights minus that S grille and u'd have a good design. 5.5/10

Steve - Quite nice. Nothing special though. The front seems dull, I think its because the lights are horizontal so theres little emotion up front. I like the side treatment. The lack of A-pillars(or are they black?) shouts GTR. Also, your overhangs are way too short, Silvia's have decent sized hoods. Render is pretty good 7/10

NelsonDesign - Very nice renders. I dont see any nissan in these drawings and very little homage to the previous generation Silvias. It seems you spent more time o the side than the front of the car because the front seems very bland and lacks character. I like the intergration of the side character line with the spoiler. However, with that spoiler being so far into the car it would not serve its main purpose too well? 6.5/10

I will comment as more entries come along.
Thanks again guys

As much as I appreciate the critique, as a previous owner of an S13 Silvia, I can tell you for a fact the hood's aren't very long. ;)

And I can tell you, that my inspiration for my front end came from somewhere that I said would guarantee votes from me, aka the S13:

Whether or not you are allowed, that is a bold design and I like nose's "futureretro" feel a lot. What I liked about MRF's design was its production readiness. Generally I find concepts trying to be too artsy fartsy for their own good. Steve your concept is sufficiently "concepty" without flying into the ether. I like that I can almost see it morph into a production car. 9/10

All Im saying is that longer overhangs would make your design more accomplished. If you compare your sketch with the picture you've put up here you can see the hood is long though. Its not a short hood thats for sure. haha anyway im just nit picking mate because its hard to crit your work most of the time

Wow! The competition hasn't been this good for a long time!

Cosworth - I like the congruity of the lights with the front intakes and the big S is a great idea though it would look better if made in the original font/style :)

mrfdesign - Mega awesome style and mega cool light cluster, i just love the detail on the LED's! I love the little grille too. Its a really great interpretation of the current Nissan design language though the side could be a little more surfaced. But gr8 job!

Steve - WOW WOW WOW! That looks like THE muscle car of the future. Asian muscle. Simple yet extremely strong looks. And i love the sketch and the render. Gr8 job!

Nelson - You, my friend, have a skill which is evolving at light speed as can be seen in this design! Your marker use is just great and the design is smooth too. Simple yet radical (main side view). Nice one!

Heavily inspired by the 180SX, here's mine.

Sweet 16 - After throwing down the gauntlet at the German's with the GTR and new Z, Nissan now has their sights set on taking down the new generation of muscle cars coming out of Detroit and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe too. The new S16 Silvia will serve as the gateway vehicle to Nissan's world renowned performance lineup complimenting the GTR and Z. The new Silvia rides on a modified FM platform and is powered by Nissan's 297 hp 3.5-liter VQ35HR V6 or optional 2.5-liter 200 hp QR25DE 4-cylinder.

Great idea AXIS, but the VQ35 engine would make its performance parallel to the G37 and therefore out of the average buyer's price range. Maybe use a four? Otherwise, great render.

AXIS - very very nice man. I like the blend of 370Z and GTR. The front shouts 370Z whilst the rear is very GTR orientated. The only problem i have is with the wheels. They dont look right , they car is very 3D but the wheels are very flat looking. Otherwise great job

Kramer- looks very familiar to one of your previous works. Im not enjoying the front end much, it looks very busy and doesnt intergrate very well. From the A-pillar back however, it looks pretty decent. One thing you must consider with your next design is to increase the length of your wheelbase. At the moment your silvia's wheelbase is 1 and a half wheels in length which is rather short. Should be about 3 wheels at least. I can see the rear has been inspired by previous silvias. Good work

I have done so many silvia sketches, but I aint happy with any of them. I think i'm gonna try and forget adding retro Silvia design cues and go modern and cutting edge.. the kind of car the Silvia would be now. I'm also thinking of making it a small coupe, as the 370z and GT-R cover a lot of the coupe market. I think the Silvia should be the affordable Nissan coupe.

I'll try and get a final entry done before the deadline but can't promise anything!

All the entries so far are awesome!

Bah,

Not gonna have time to draw the ultimate Silvia, so i'll enter the best of a bad bunch of Silvia's that i've drawn. I'll post up the others at a later date in the design section.

Anyway, my entry...

With this Silvia, I tried to mix some GT-R cues with a simple and clean front end with echoes of S13.

Why thankyou!

You know what, the same thing happened in the Alfa 169 contest we had ages ago. The one I entered I thought was the best, but everyone else prefered the rejected designs that I posted up. So from now on, if i don't like a design, i'll enter it lol. I have different tastes too most people. I am weird!

Having said that, I do like the shape and sides of my Silvia, I just wasn't too sure about the front end. But it seems y'all like it!

Late again and because of that I missed a few details and was a bit lazy on the shading [as if my shading is that good anyways]. The side line was experimental as I was trying all sorts of ideas.
My Silvia,

It would use a powerful turbocharged 4 and will mainly focus on fun, agile handling with a firm but livable ride.

Sorry for the last minute entry, guys :)

I tried to draw on elements of the Silvia's past while giving it a renewed sense of purpose as the "muscle car" in Nissan's lineup. What the 370Z is to the Cayman and the GT-R is to the Corvette Z06/Porsche 911 Turbo, the new Silvia would be to cars like the Genesis Coupe, Ford Mustang, and possible upcoming Toyota/Subaru sports car. It would rely on turbocharged four-cylinder engines alone (perhaps multiple grades) and would ideally offer the option of a true stick shift or paddle-shift automatic.

My primary inspiration was the Silvia S10, an early iteration that I personally find to be one of the more attractive models. After the S10 the Silvia got successively less distinctive with each generation, even downright boring in some years. Even though the S10 was not the most widely acclaimed of the Silvia models, it nonetheless provided a wonderful basis for a modern Nissan muscle coupe. The sweeping character lines along the side, the elegant DLO, the upright slatted grille and deep-set headlamps with black surrounds are all nods to the S10, but it is the dramatic fastback shape and long, imposing flat hood which act as the most powerful homage to that model while also endowing the new Silvia (S16) with a uniquely muscular presence absent from later model Silvias.

Silvia S10

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/6594/s10jb2.jpg

I think this is exactly where a new Silvia could succeed, especially here in NA (where it would obviously be marketed as an SX). I was very deliberate in visually separating the new Silvia from its Z and GT-R brethren; I didn't want a "baby Z" or "baby GT-R" because I wanted the car to be desirable in its own way, not as a compromise or step down from one of Nissan's more expensive sports cars. To that end, I tried to give it a look all its own, but one that would position it as a natural competitor to other entry-level sports cars.

Prodigy - very nice man. The rear is very GTR , the front is obviously influenced by previous generation silvias. Nice drawing too mate!

ElementW - im loving those lights man, very aggressive. Interesting character line u've got going on there. The front is great.

DoMiNo - excellent render man as always. The design itself is rather anonymous in the way that it doesnt scream nissan to me much. I do however see the S10 influence, its a great redesign.

My votes...
3 - ElementW - A brillaint, pure, simple, attractive design. Love it.
3 - PRODIGY - Very sharp, I like how you included some GT-R and 370Z cues in there.
2 - mrfdesign - Again, very nice design, front end is full of menace.
2 - Steve Niell - Mean looking, almost like a muscle car, front end reminds me of older Silvias.
Brilliant contest, brilliant designs. It was impossible to pick between the top two, so I gave them both equal points. :)

This has been the hardest contest to vote in, as every single entry features great ideas, details, and shapes. I wish I could give you all points. I awarded 4 points to my favourite, and 2 points each as joint 2nd place for my votes as I like them all equally as much.

Anyways..

4 = Steve Neill - I knew you'd come up with an awesome design for this one! It's ultra fresh AND retro. It's rare that fresh and retro meet suscessfully, but you have done it! Love the stance, adore the front wheelarches, and I think the front works perfectly. It would be another instant icon for Nissan, and I like the fact that the design doesn't have any 370z or GT-R cues in it.. you've managed to create a new shape that is still recognisibly Nissan!

2 = AXIS - Another awesome design. This one is more smooth than Steve's with a little bit of GT-R influence. It looks very classy and expensive and would be a great seller.

2 = DoMiNo - Never expected this! This is only design here that takes its inspiration from older Silvias, and it's a brave move.. I didn't know anything about the S10 and had never seen any pics of it before! But it works well. Love the shape, stance and details. It rivals the Mustang in the 'butch, in yer face' looks department.

2 = ElementW - A very interesting design! The DLO is very interesting and unique, and I love the front end detailing!

^The above are all my favourites, though I like EVERY design here, and wished I could have included you all in the points!

The rest....

Cosworth: Yours has some unique styling touches! Looks very sporty, and I love the 'S' logo and the headlights! You're getting better skillswise too!

mrfdesign: A very good drawing and render, and I love the radical headlights. The shape is very reminiscent of the 1990s Silvia/240sx.

NelsonDesign: Another great drawing and design from you. This has an 80s feel to it IMO. Also reminds me of an old Ferrari concept (Mythos?) which is good!

Kramer: Love the front end detailing, and I like the short squat stance. Looks very sporty.

Here is my voting, I may come off a little harsh for some of you, but I think that harsher critiquing is something that we need on this site, it'll help us grow.

Cosworth- I like the idea of the "S" on the front, yet the profile of the side doesn't seem quite right, practice=perfection, you should do a whole bunch of sketches on paper, and mostly side views, thats what I do everyday.
Mrfdesign- Looks very sporty and a lot of nice curves are on here, but I don't know, it looks a little too similar to Nissan's current line-up, not too wacky.
Steve Neill- Oh man! I love this Steve, aggresive, great stance and it looks great. Great job.
AXIS- Your best render by far in my opinion, your best perspective, one of your best works, yet the design isn't really too extravagant.
Kramer- There are some obvious wheelbase issues on the view, and the front isn't really "beautiful" but I like your spoiler idea and the old Datsun'ish of it.
PRODIGY- Defenantily a close companion of the GT-R, maybe too close? It's kinda wide and not really a pretty front, but I do like your roofline and overall stance.
ElementW- Oh wow Element, I love all the curves and the fact that it doesn't look too similar to Current NIssans is a plus, more views would be nice.
Domino- Render and sketch wise it is amazing (like always from you) But the design is not my favorite from you by far, the side is very nice, but that front just really makes the design worse, great job though.

Prodigy 3 / Totally believable in-in-the-dealers look that immediately shows its links to other sporting Nissans.

Axis 3 / forward thinking, believably proportioned, and sublimely perfect in those proportions

MRF 2 / a bit busy in the nose but 100% believable as a right-now product

Steve Neill 1 / The best of the "concepty" entries

Wow. Just... wow. Very radical yet realistic, which is hard to pull off. Some issues with the wheel ellipses but otherwise, I'd drive the production version in a heartbeat. I love how it integrates with the other cars in Nissan's current lineup, like the Altima and Maxima. Stunning stuff, mate!

Steve Neill - 3
So simple, yet so beautiful. Reminds me of an iPod, where it's just so minimalist but it just works.Your JDM background clearly reflects in the purposeful integration of the S13 Silvia's wraparound front end with modern styling cues.

ElementW - 2
Radical, organic design. No rough edges, reminds me of some sort of fish. Think Mitsuoka Orochi, but a million times more tastefully executed. Only issue I have is with the circular grille at the bottom; I think it would look much better as a rounded-off rectangle instead of a clearcut oval. Great design though, taken as a whole it's one of those designs that just looks good.

DoMiNo- 1
Yet again, another wonderful render from Dom. Kick-ass technique and pizzazz, but I honestly wasn't feeling it much this time. Your decision to emulate the S10 Silvia (not the prettiest one) wasn't the best. However, I can say that you did the best that was possible in trying to make modernize the S10 Silvia, because IMO the S10 wasn't such a hot-looking car to begin with. You did great, but I've gotta stick by the old standby of "You can't put lipstick on a pig"...although, that was some sexy lipstick ;)

To everyone else: Great entries, you guys. It was hard trying to pick the best out of all of these since we're all advancing so much now! I look forward to the next contest =D

4.- PRODIGY - AMAZING! This design is a subtle wink and a great compliment to the GTR but with enough personality to hold its own and familiar cues which makes it easily recognized as a Silvia.

3.- ElementW - I love the fact that you have bucked the trend of using GTR & 370Z influences and gone with a design direction all your own. Creating a truly compelling design. Great Work!

2.- Steve Neill - The dramatic stance and muscular proportions make for a very handsome design, However your presentation feels like you are still in the ideation phase. I was expecting you to go all out for this.

1.- NelsonDesign - You seem to grow leaps and bounds with every entry, I am really enjoying that side view its very fresh and forward thinking. However in the 3/4 view the bulbous front end throws off your dynamic design.

3-Axis-Definetly one of your best renders! Has an expensive look and won't be mistaken for any other Nissan model.

2-NelsonDesign-I love your marker work, the car looks very unique and concept like. Good job!

2-Prodigy-Has a very sporty, driver focused look with familiar design cues. Nice!

1-Kramer-Not a bad looking design, just needs to be streched out somewhat. Very Datsun like and has a sporty stance.
