So I come back from class and start up iTunes, and it asks me some questions about my iPod. I stupidly click yes on them all, and then it says that it is updating. I though it just meant updating the iPod software, since there was a new update released in February. But alas, it overwrote 8 <I> GB</I> of music from my iPod. So now I have to start completely over and find all of the downloaded music I had on it, and re-rip ALL of my 40 or so CDs. Needless to say, I am NOT a happy camper right now (it took me a year to collect all of the music that was on it). <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/crying.gif" BORDER="0">

Don't you keep permanent MP3's of all your ripped and downloaded (commercially or otherwise) music on your hard drive anyway?

I never keep copies of my downloaded music (unless I buy it off iTunes), because I have limited hard drive space.

It's not a question of if your hard drive will fail, but when. Mean-time-to-failure is getting longer and longer and may never happen in the lifespan of your computer, but one day it will happen. Several times they had replaced the hard drive but it still kept on screwing up, so I just got a new computer. So far no problems...hopefully it'll stay like that for a long time <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif" BORDER="0">

Read what you click!<p>You could store the songs in the iPod in its external-hard-drive mode...

like paul said, I've lost a few hard-drives in my day. Luckily when my last music dedicated hard-drive died, we were able to get the reading arm started again, long enough to ghost the drive onto a back-up before it died for good. I was able to replace it and not loose my music (thankfully). Now days I use two hard drives on my pc for that very reason. one dedicated to music files slaved to another one which I use for for my regular use (OS, applications, etc.). less wear and tear and less chance of me screwing up the dedicated drive. <p>You should still save all your music onto discs as compressed files.

Yeah. I am not gonna delete any of my music that I downloaded. I am still gonna delete the ripped music, because I always have the CDs with me.

true john, but it's a real hassle to have to re-rip your music files into a compressed format. IMO, you are better off, saving compressed copies of your music files and burning data CD's off all your compressed music (including the downloaded files). That way you have a back-up (especially of your downloaded music) which you can always either tap for new music or simply up-load directly without having to re-rip you music. Since you can save about 80 or so compressed music files on an average cd, you should be able to back up your collection without too much trouble.

The bug struck again, but this time it was with internet access. The company that my school (as well as MSU, U of M, and about 80 other colleges) buy internet from had an outage for 8 hours yesterday. It was like living in the dark ages.........

I remmember that, we were going to canada that day and since it was daylight we really didnt notice until we checked into a hotel and the lights were out. Since it was niagra falls the power was on in an hour before it got dark so i had no problems with it. Back home i heard the power was out for 10 min
