According to thinksecret.com, Apple will release tomorrow at the Macworld convention a new smaller version of the I-pod. This one will be even smaller than the I-pod Mini. The reason being that it doesn't use a hard drive, but rather 2Gigs of flash memory (memory cards suplied by samsung).
The rummor goes that they are also going to start selling sub $500 Mac Desktops for all of you who have always wanted a mac but couldn't warrant spending the money (when a nice dell was available).
On other news, Toshiba announced that they have increased the size of compact flash cards to an amazing 2 and 4 gigabytes of storage space.
All of a sudden my I-pod is looking like a dinosaur.

Learn something new every day. I did a little research based on your info and if I'm reading things right, the max available of CF cards that you can plug into a device is currently 8gigs. The 16 GB cards are PC cards, and according to the site I looked at are available for proffesional applications. Since the price of the 4GB card is about $500, I imagine it will be a while before we start seeing many products being offered with large scale solid state memory at a reasonable price.
I guess my I-pod might be good for another year or two.

No screen? shuffle only mode? It sounds an awful lot like....... A RADIO!
BTW, your G4 has a shuffle mode. Unless this vershion has tons of memory; is really small (so you can use it for sports); and most of all, is cheap (not usually an apple strong point); I fail to see the point.

lol.
I know about shuffle mode!
Just that the normal iPod is huge, when you only fill 1/4 of its memory.

I have a feeling the iPod and Apple name are going to be enough to get people to buy this quirky player. I am not so sure about the whole no screen completely random thing, but knowning Apple, they'll come out with an accessory that has a screen in it soon.

I guess I'm the only one here who doesn't like the Shuffle...
Why? Because it looks basicly nothing like a regular iPod, and just the fact that it is so cheap and doesn't have that much memory worries me. Apple already has like 87% of the harddrive MP3 player market, so why do they need this? It's like BMW making a car to compete with the smart fortwo at the exact same price. Not to mention, there use to be one version of the iPod: the iPod. Now there are 4 versions (5 if you include the U2 special edition), so I think it may become confusing for consumers.

At this point in time, IMO, the only thing thet the Ipod has going for it is that compared to the others it is relatively cheap for the amount of memory it offers. Something tells me that over the next couple of months however, the competition m,ight start upping their memory and dropping their prices more in-line with Apple's. If that happens, Apple's advantage would be gone, because everyone else trumps the I-pod in every other feature (especially the iriver N10 and the Phillips Key)

If you can't operate an MP3 player without a screen, then YOU SUCK. As long as you memorize the interface and are able to identify what songs are on your MP3 player by listening to the first few seconds of them, you'll do just fine if you were to have a shuffle. I can safely say this because I've successfully operated 3 MP3 players without looking at the screen (Creative MuVo NX, iPod, and BenQ Joybee 130) mainly because I'm to lazy to take it out of my pocket.
If the shuffle were to look like an iPod, it'd probably end up bulkier than its competitors. Also, flash memory costs more than hard drives, thus a 150:1 dollar-to-GB ratio is more justifiable, especially when other flash-based MP3 players at the same price offer a 600:1 dollar-to-GB ratio.
And honestly, can everyone dish out $300 for an iPod? Or $250 for a mini?

I think this is really cool, I lot of people want an iPod but most people think it is too expensive and it's storage space is too large - therefore the Shuffle would be a good alternative.
Anyway, check this out: Mac Mini
http://www.apple.com/macmini/

Apple sees a market that it could very well conquest, and it is making a move to do just that.

To be honest I don't really like this..... I wouldn't even call this an iPod, however I do think it'll sell (people just seem obsessed with Apple these days). If I had to buy a smaller mp3-player I'd probably wouldn't choose this...simply because IMO there are loads of more attractive and probably better players (sound quality-wise etc.) on the market.
