just wondering see when you guys go to a car dealer to drool over a car what do you tell the sales man so that can get to sit in it and see the engine etc.
i tell them that i study car design and am a fan of the car.always seems to work.although at my local bentley dealer where they sale bentleys, ferraris, lambos, amg's,porsche and stuff like that the guys know me so am i allowed to do what i want ........to a certain extent anyway

I'm old enough and I'm usually wearing some kind of business outfit (casual or not), so when I go into a dealership, people just assume I'm there to buy something, so they show me the car.

i just say to the dealer that i'm interested in the car. But before that i study some info about the car to impress the dealer I wear formal clothes, coz i'm almays interested in the latest BMW's models. But the BMW dealer now knows me and lets me ''study'' the cars. Also the Volvo dealer knows me very well. I was very interested in bying a volvo (which i did).

Seems likea ot of you use your nice clothes to trick the dealers
What do you suggest for a 19-year old guy wearing a polo and jeans or khakis to tell the dealer when wanting to test drive a car (a new A6 preferrably )?

tell him you're the snotty and spoiled kid of the richest businessman in town and daddy wants to buy you a nice car that would fit all your "frends" but still be nice and be able to cuddle you, where money is by no means and impediment
(j/k)

Go on a really slow day when they are scratching their butts and tell them you are a design student and want to learn about the car. They'll be glad to tell you what they know about it. you might even get some brochures out of the deal. Asking them for an unpaid internship will always get you great access and info (thought it's preferable to do that at a large multibrand dealership).
Usually I just go along with my dad after work, cos it kinda makes it look a little more 'official' I think.
That got me a seat in an EB110, and the Bentley LeMans car. :D

hehe i usually go with my dad; the merc dealer knows us enough that we can waltz in and whatever. otherwise, my dad goes "i'm buying a car for him and he wants to drive it before he buys it" or whatever. it's gotten me in a lancer evo and an audi tt at tops.

I wander around the dealer until I find an unlocked one. Either I'll find an unlocked car and crawl through it, or a salesman will come out and ask if I'd like help. Then I just go in to "I'm looking to buy in about a month and am collecting information and opinions, I was wondering if I can check out this *Model name*"
or something like that.
If I have enough time and they are bored I will ask for a test drive, best example is the Volvo dealership where we were supposed to go eat dinner, but my wife was crawling through an XC90, and the salesperson was like "well, we're here any time you want to check out the car, and we're just sitting around eating donuts" so I said "ok, if your that bored I wouldn't mind a test drive" "ok, I'll get the keys"
problem with that is I don't think they'd let a 17 year old in jeans and a T-Shirt do something like that. I had my family and was looking at the new S60, my daughter even came along for the drive.

I just go into the dealer with my camera around my neck, ask the people if they wouldnt mind me taking a few photos (usually about 50), and as im a kid they know im not exactly gona come back and steal the car so they dont really mind. I also sometmes manage to get my hands on some preproduction brochures like the new focus one i have!

Its never happened to me all the times I've done it. Most cars don't have that sensitive of alarms straight from the factory, you'd have to pretty much break the handle off to set the alarm off. A good way to get by the sales people that I found is know more about the cars than them. All the ones I've met don't know the cars very well, or what they do know is as much as you probably do. If you can talk circles around them they usually will ignore all your probing and prodding of the car, just keep talking to them.

I just go right before close and in street clothes. I think they know I'm not going to buy, and since they are getting ready to shut down they know I won't put off any pothential customers. Got me a seat in a CLS500 anyway.
