So this is a new model, new platform? or just new exterior, new engines and some minor retooling?

I'd guess it's "all new" meaning that they did a new exterior. The Avalanche isn't exactly setting sales on fire and this prototype looks a lot like the old one.

How can they know for sure it is an Avalanche, and not the Caddy?

It's new from the ground up on the new SUV platform, they will launch it with a flurry of marketing which will light the sales on fire for the first year.<p>You can tell it's the Chevy version because the bar on the grill, and because the Flying Buttress is black plastic, as opposed to body colored

I wonder if chevy will offer a model with the black cladding and one without like on the current Av.

Wow, looks beefy. Word on the street is that GM is really rushing to get these new trucks done ASAP. They've even diverted resources from developing the new RWD car platform to get it in production fast (revenue is a MAJOR issue at GM right now and trucks continue to be a solution). Looks like it'll be a nice counterpoint to Titan, et. al.

Let's just hope that they are not rushing these too much. It would be disasterous if these came out plagued with recalls...

I know that the Avalanche has the gray butresses, but I figured for a mule, they wouldn't bother swapping out the base ones for the Caddilac's painted ones. I also noticed the large bar on the grill, yet I am not convinced that equates to Chevy. Yes, it is likely the Chevy, but I was wondering if there were any other major differences that led people to say that.

GM is banking on these vehicles to make big money but it would not surprise me if they wind up being rebate queens. Heck these vehicles could be a total disaster like the Colorado/Canyon twins: "All new", ugly, and slow selling. These vehicles will not save GM, they will only prolong the agony of their continuing slide.

If this Avalanche has any hope of selling in large numbers it has to be able to do everything it usedto plus a whole lot more. The quality of build will be a large deciding factor in purchase IMO. The new kid on the block (RIDGELINE) is already out and generating some buzz.
