The british tv show 'Top Gear' recently featured the ALC concept.. they said the usual stuff like how it is basically the new XK etc..
But the key thing they mentioned was that they have heard that a 'special' version giving about 500BHP is in the works. Considering that the presenters have good links, i'd take this hint as being pretty strong...

It would be nice, but it would surprise me. Land Rover have had access to the Aston Martin V12.. which is an extremely tight fit in the current Range Rover. It would be impressive if Jaguar could fit that huge V12 into the Jaguar.
Then again, it would also be a hard task getting another 100BHP from the current suprcharged V8...

Actually, in Top Gear they said it would be a special version with "up to" 500 HP. In many rumors, the figure of 450 HP is mentioned...
As to the possibility of getting 500 Hp out of the current supercharged V8: a Porsche 911 Turbo gets 420 HP out of a 3.6liter engine. If the jaguar engine could get similar hp per liter, it would be possible. And don't forget that over 10 years ago, Jaguar already got 540 HP out of a 3.6 liter engine with its XJ220

Clarkson is well informed when it comes to jaguar.. they have a habit of getting his views during development. so he's definately 'in the know'
But i do see your point that there are options for the Jag... although i don't see them doing a major turbocharger trick like in the XJ220.. The engine does have scope for potential, so it should be interesting. 500BHP on an aluminium car should definately bring it up to M6 territory.

This past weekend's Top Gear show in the UK said the concept car looked exactly like the production car because they've seen the production car up close and it looks like the concept car.

Correct it does look 98% like the production version. Clarkson reckons its like a DB9 for 50k less.

That spoiler most likely (and thankfully) won't make it to production. The only Jag I've seen with a wing anywhere close to the same size was the Trans-Am racecar! The mods will probably just consist of a wire-mesh grill, chrome side vents, and maybe different and/or bigger wheels. Also, tjts1, I'd like to know the rationale behind the Jag's "chick car-ness." I'll never understand why nice, cleanly designed cars are automatically considered feminine. Whale-tail spoilers and rediculous bodykits don't make a good-looking car.

That chop is just hideous. Take an ALC and then pimp it beyond all rational reasoning. No, No and thrice No!
Personally I think the XK coupe is very masculine. I see any women drivers as power-suit wearing execs. The convertible is more uni-sex though.

Hahaha DoMiNo...
Anyway lets not get too stuck on the Jaguar being a girls car, I personally think that coiuldn't be further from the truth but if thats what someone thinks, thats opinion.
The question is now, how will it match up to its rivals, 911, M6, Normal 6er, CLK, and so on. I certainly hope Jaguar matches and outperforms the above cars, and finally get the reliability right. Its Jaguar's chance to show that they are back in the buisness, and I hope they do. If you love Jaguar, its great news, if you dont, its still good news because competition always triggers improvement.
But I would like to see this Jag with a sligtly different face though (It looks a bit fordich to me). Guess it wont happen but its not really a big issue.

Jaguar launched its new XK at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show-but there's clearly more to come.
These are first photos of the XKR, shown here as a convertible prototype during cold weather testing. The differences from the stock XK are clear: there's an altered front end with big air intakes, air intakes in the hood and four big exhaust pipes at the rear end, along with larger wheel arches and a taller rear spoiler.
With its newly bulging hood, the XKR is taking aim at the BMW M6 and Mercedes SL 55 AMG. Backing up its claim is a supercharged 4.2-ltier V-8 delivering 400 hp.
Both the XKR coupe and convertible are expected to make their public debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall and to be in the showrooms in 2008

http://img221.imageshack.us/my...g.jpg
http://img221.imageshack.us/im...c.jpg

that's funny, they taped up the badges instead of just not placing one on them on the car in the first place.

well i explain myself - the sport seats look cheaply finished - any Recaro seat in an Aston Martin is way better finished - thats my personal point of view and if u work hard and u have to spent u sour earned Dollars in a cheap looking car - u look twice before u order it ...

If it was then I'd expect it to be a bit rough.
Also, if you were to get a Vantage how much more would it cost over a XKR? And remember that you'll have to pay for extras like leather and sat-nav. But if you have the money go for the one you like the most.
I saw my first new XK (might have been a XKR ) yesterday in a side street in Greater London It does look much better in the flesh and was instantly recognisable. I always thought that I'd get it confused with an Aston but that wasn't the case.

the price for the new XKR convertible and the V8 Vantage convertible will be identic for about 125.000 Euros here in Germany.....
PS: those cars havnt been prototypes - more like *ready to sell* cars...
I never said that the new XK aint looking good - its a cool car but with a cheap *american* style finish.. (perhaps cause thats the market where 50% of the production goes)

But you're right about Jaguar not doing enough to satisfy the European market, even their home market.
I hope you told the dealer to tell Jaguar what what you thought, hopefully they'll make changes for the 08/09 MY. I know that we told our local dealer that we would have loved to have a small car like RD6, an S-Type estate or a Jag with four wheel drive (other than X-Type). They couldn't deliver so we bought an Audi instead, hopefully they'll listen to customers and win some back - but it's looking doubtful.
