BMW is considering to build a new super roadster / supercar.
There was an article about that a while ago in AutoCar: http://www.autocarmag.com/news...13192
BMW's DesignWorks design studio relased some conceptual sketches of "California Spyder" at last Los Angeles Auto Show:

Reminds me of a Solstice/Sky.

I really don't see any point to BMW having a supercar (in the traditional sense, as opposed to the M5, a saloon with supercar engine) in their line-up. But then again, I don't see the point of M-B making MPVs, so that shows how out of the loop I am...

Those sketches were done by an art student for a BMW DWC design competition. BMW decided to show them at the show to gauge public reaction. As for those chops, I would guess they show the general idea, but some of the detailing is funky. (BMW would NEVER put the badge on the side so low, and the general look is a little too smooth)

BMW doesn't need this car.

I disagree, i think BMW does need a car like this, or something like it. BMW does not have anything to compete in the growing market of two door sports cars. the 6er is kind of in the class of the CLK, so if BMW wants to go head on, they need an ultra sport-luxury cruiser, one that drops jaws like the SL and not scratches heads with designs of the 6&7er

valid point. I suspect BMW suffers from Mercedes envy and feels it needs a car to match them at the top end of the scale.

This is hugely pointless, and the second chop looks to be based off of a Solstice. It would be a really bad move to build this.

They will build a car only in the case they see a market for it, and if it could make a profit. Otherwise, they would just kill or freeze the idea.
This is how good companies work. But it seems there are still some out there that act emotionally, making not prospective cars, and than suffer the consequences (loss; red numbers).

most large automakers use supercars to 'spice up' their marketing image. BMW is already known to make 'driver's cars' so I don't see the real benefit of a true supercar.
But I'm still a NOObie here, so don't take me seriously

Z9 concept is quite old...isn't it? i mean my pics are Z9...searched on google..

Z9 was a concept which precursed the BMW 6 series, it is already in production as the 6er, so we will not see further development on the Z9
There is speculation of another car which appeared as a concept, or something strnage about it, but I believe we debunked it.

Quote:
How naive! BMW is not a person with feelings like envy, anger, desire etc.
Actually...
BMW may not be a person with feelings, but the people who run these operations are and they are VERY often men of tremendous ego. The angers, desires and miscelaneous pathos of CEO's and executive VP's at car companies is often seen in the products and marketing decisions they make.
That said, however, BMW isn't dumb. They'll make this car if there is a business case for it. The ultra high-end two-seat sports car market is NOT growing in size though, only growing more competitive. I wouldn't be surprised if they put the M6 convertible at the top and called it a day (at least for the time being).

the CLK is more like a E-klass coupe..
The CLK Class is based on the C-Class, so it's not really an E-Class coupe. The CL is not a 6 Series competitor - it is too large and luxurious than the 6 Series. The SL is not a 6 Series competitor either.

Actually I read in a magazine which quoted Helmu Planke, bmw chairman, that the SL definatley stands alone its class and they should build a competitor.

Maybe the chop is deceiving but the size just looks too small that of a Z9, at least to me. I recall there was a series of spy shots earlier this year from winding road not long ago, where it was first thought to be the Z9, but later no one was sure Z9, or Z4.
EDIT: found the thread - the Z4 thread:
http://www.carspyshots.net/zer...age=5

Nor was I. My point is that given how low the production numbers will be on this vehicle, making this a "green" vehicle would be done solely to pander to the politics sky-is-falling brigade who buy 100k+ Lexus LS sedans with the word "hybrid" on them so that they can feel good about themselves. The impact on the environment would be nil. Moreover, emissions regulations are already quite tight. Is there room for improvement in emissions and mpg? Of course! But focusing that on a low-volume sportscar has no business case other than bragging rights. The 3 and 5 series and their SUV/CUV variants would be where BMW would be wiser to go green.

I get you, but with a certain Lexus hybrid supercar on the horizon that WILL make ppl notice, BMW will have to play ball. A greener Z9 will definately keep everyone happy and it is possible. Again look at the rumoured new Merc petrol engines
