I like the front but the back is kinda boring. I wonder if there will even be a "next" GTO<br> <IMG SRC="http://forums.autoweek.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/31-14054-287476-6044/2008%20GTO.jpg" BORDER="0"> <br> <br> <IMG SRC="http://forums.autoweek.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/31-14318-294540-6333/GTO.jpg" BORDER="0"> <br> <IMG SRC="http://forums.autoweek.com/servlet/JiveServlet?attachImage=true&contentType=image%2Fjpeg&attachment=6327" BORDER="0"> <br>source: MT

MT was speculating about a Zeta-based goat. With Zeta shelved indefinitely for the US market, I doubt this design will materialize, even if there is a next-gen GTO.

I, personally, like the look. Looks to be a nice, long, wheelbase.<p>Is it just me, or does the car look a bit Alpha on the front?

Side profile look's a bit Mustang-ish to me....<p>So this is what "our" Monaro will look like, but without the Pontiac front??

You're both right. It's an Alfa Mustang..!

Yeah, that front end is a straight-up Alpha Brera rip-off, minus the cool three-light clusters. Back is a TL meets Mustang. An "AlphaTLustang?"<p>It's such a shame how GM is neglecting their products and starving their brands. I feel like I'm watching this hideous train wreck in ultra slow motion. It's like everyone knows what's going to happen, and we all wish it wasn't, but there doesn't seem to be anything we can do...<p>Sure the GTO is kinda cool but really, unless they start making real products -- truly credible ones that people actually find exciting -- they should just save the money and send Pontiac out to the dead brand pasture.

Hope not - looks hideous in my eyes.

welcome to the 80s.<p>the only part that isnt direct rip-off from mustang is hood, and thats from 80s Trans-Am <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/laugh2.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/biggrin.gif" BORDER="0">

Well the next Commodore is based on the GM Zeta base...<p>And the commodore is the basis for the Monaro...<p>And the Monaro is the GTO, so I assume it'll share a totally differnt look to that ;thing'.<p>What I'm excited about is the versatility of Zeta!

As was stated before, that front end is a modern rendition of a late 70'-early 80's Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am:<p><IMG SRC="http://www.pontiacserver.com/transam78/01_front_right_640.jpg" BORDER="0"><p>Also, the Trans-Am's look owed much to the styling of the 1964-71 Pontiac (Tempest) GTO, all of which had the elongated grills (in varying forms), Twin Headlamps (in varying forms), center-line grill ridge, and hood-scoop nostrils (see the 1971 model for the ones that look like those on the drawing).

There is no reason there would not be a next GTO, but I'm guessing that GM will have to figure out how to get it into the Mustang's price range a bit more closely. Should Pontiac vaporize as a brand, the GM engineers who are so good at changing noses of cars to change identities, could make it a Camaro. If the Monaro was essentially US ready when Lutz got the idea of having an Australian car become the incarnation of an American icon, I would assume that the next generation would be US ready as well.

Sadly, there are a lot of reasons for not making another GTO, namely poor sales and the outstanding question of a rear-drive platform. Right now, the Mustang is an awfully daunting hill for Pontiac to climb.

A GTO with a bit more heritage and without blandness, ridiculous body cladding or nostrils over nostrils (last Trans Am) is needed as is a price that is in the playing field. Had the GTO been priced right at the start, it may not have hit the market with a resounding thud.
