Based on the underpinnings of the latest generation M-class sport utility vehicle, the regular R-Class comes with permanent four wheel drive and, as standard, a seven-speed automatic gearbox with column-mounted shift - features that the hot AMG version is likely to retain.
It's rumoured that like the current S-Class, which comes in S55 and S65 AMG forms, the R-Class, actually longer than an S in length, will also get two AMG derivatives. First, pictured here, is the R55 with the familiar 476bhp, 5.5-litre supercharged V8 as used in several other Mercedes AMG models. Second would be a new 6.3-litre V8, reportedly under development for use in the next-generation S-Class, developing closer to 600bhp and dubbed R63 AMG.
The R-Class is set for launch in autumn 2005, with right-hand-drive models following early 2006. We'd expect R55 AMG versions in both left- and right-hand-drive to become available during spring 2006, and the 6.3-litre versions sometime afterwards.

source: 4car

I'm not sold on Mercedes' new design direction. Im not really a fan of the R-Class nor do I like the new G. Their cars are still wonderful but Im not sold on the crossover/SUVs....but seeing as it is an AMG

This looks really really hot! But besides the quad exhaust I do not see a whole lot differences. The front air intakes look about the same than on the normal production model. Also the side bumpers dont seem to be much different.

The rapid six-seat crossover vehicle (part MPV, part 4x4) will be the first in a whole line of future AMG models to receive a new naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V8 engine being developed as a replacement for todays supercharged 5.4-litre V8.
The new powerplant will produce 504bhp in its highest state of tune, although Mercedes is expected to alter the output to suit the various AMG models.
In the R-class, the new V8 will channel its drive via a beefed-up version of Mercedes 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels. Mercedes Airmatic air suspension will be fitted as standard though, as these photographs reveal, the R-class tall body means it will have its work cut to minimise body roll when the car is pushed hard.
Setting the AMG version of the R-class apart from the standard version is a more aggressive-looking body kit with a deeper front bumper, chunkier side skirts and AMGs signature quad exhausts.

source: autocar

In the first pic, am I seeing things, or is the window shattered, vent lifted, light(s) missing?
Has this been in an accident

I dont think the windows shattered in the first pic, looks more like dirty water when it runs over the windshield at high speeds. This baby looks very promising by the way, nice, subtle yet sporty looking outfit for such a mean beast of engine.
