i dont know how it could fit into the lineup; the new toledo is a hatch now (it's also basically an altea with a bigger rear end)

It fits between the Ibiza and the Altea, as the Golf fits between the Polo and the Golf Plus. Hope it will be a 3dr version and powerful motors.

The new Leon is gonna be just a lower Altea. Nothing more, nothing less. Platform and engines will be fully shared. And there's not gonna be a 3 door version as far as i know.

No 3 door version. I know that for a fact. Its gonna be long than the Altea.

This might just be a prototype. They showed it to everyone what the Salsa will look like in 2000

The Altea does look good, but that's no reason to just copy/paste the design all over the line-up. It will end up spoiling the idea imo. Anyhow, i remember reading somewhere that seat's design is taking a new direction from the 08 Ibiza onward, so we will see where their going then.

I don't know much about SEAT. I know they are part of VW and they are made in Spain thats about it. This new car looks kinda like a prettier Mazda3. Are these cars reliable? Are they more expensive than VW's? Will they ever come to the U.S.? Seems like VW could use a less expensive line here since they are trying to go "upscale"in America.

VW came in in 89 i think.
Nowadays, and like Audi's, they share all of VW's faults and qualities. Inside the group, they are now placed as the accessible sporty, youth oriented one ( like Pontiac, i guess ), and are cheaper then VW's.
As for VW going upscale, they were trying it pretty much everywhere, didn't really work, so now they're supposed to be going back on their plans a little bit and make cars just slightly above the market average, price wise ( at least here in europe ).

Quote, originally posted by - Peter - »

very odd that they are taking new direction from the 08 ibiza, when they have just taken the new direction onwards the current ibiza and are just spreading it to the whole line-up .

The Ibiza wasn't the beginning of they're new design, the Altea was (supposed to be ). If you look at the Salsa proto and the Altea, you will see the differences. The wider chrome grill, the arch that forms above the front wheel and descends along the side of the car, the more defined muscular lines... When Walter da Silva arrived at SEAT, the Ibiza was almost ready, so all he could do was tweak it a little bit, to look more like he wanted SEAT's to.
As for their changing their style, it was just a comment i read somewhere. Apparently, the Altea's style isn't bringing in the sales/enthusiasm VW wanted.

The Altea and the Toledo sort of share the same platform.

I would just like to say that i was wrong when i said Seat's style would change after 08 with the new Ibiza. In a recent interview to Automotive News Europe, Walter da Silva said, about the Altea:

Quote »

... with the Altea we began creating a new Seat... The next Seats to come, begining with the Leon replacement, will show the coherence of the design revolution we applied to the spanish brand . When the new range is complete, the Altea will no longer look like a stranger within the brand...

I'll try to post a link to the full interview as soon as i can.
Sorry, my bad.

I think it will mix in well with the others. Toledo, Altea and now this. I hope that the Alhambra wont look like this. Some crap like that. 7 Seater

Has anyone noticed the rear handle? And how the glass is actually "excavated" for an hand to operate it?! Spooky... *
As for the overall design, it's not THAT bad, IMO. It sort-of flows, and looks proportionate, and sporty... It could have looked worse (like a squashed...GOLF!)

*[i wished something like that was on the new Alfa 159, instead of those "boring" normal handles...]
