Aston's 911 rival will be unveiled early next year, probably at the Detroit Motor Show (where its 'concept car' predecessor was shown last year), with sales following by springtime. The final name for the car hasn't yet been announced; "V8 Vantage" is a possibility though many industry-watchers are putting money on a revival of "DB5". Aston Martin has, so far, strenuously denied the latter...
The AM V8 will cost from around 60,000, and is expected to account for up to 50 percent of all Aston sales, significantly upping annual output from the tiny but Ford-owned British firm. It will feature a version of the Jaguar 4.3 V8, likely to give a good 370bhp, and a supercharged R version is to follow later in the year. The engine is front mid-mounted - positioned well back in the engine bay to give optimum front:rear axle weight distribution. Six-speed manual transmission will be standard, a sequential-shift auto optional, and both gearboxes will be rear-mounted. On a practical note, it has a wide-opening hatchback, a generous luggage area and a two-seat interior inspired by the Vanquish's. Although the car pictured here has rather retro wood trim, there are likely to be all manner of bespoke interior options, including sportier aluminium finishes.

Quote, originally posted by netburner »

Here are some spypics from me at the Nordschleife/Nurburgring.
You can see, that they are testing also with an older prototype (other front and backlights).

there are 10 pages of discussion on the old forum, I don't have too much time to move them over, so just visit the old thread for the rest.

Will it be called the DB5 though, I mean that nameplate has A LOT of history behind it, are they sure they want it to be the spiritual successor to the iconic DB5? Same problem faces BMW with the M version of the 1 Series.

I'd say it's pretty likely it won't be a DB5. DB8 I could believe, but I don't see AML reviving the name of another model, it's not something they've ever done before to my knowledge.

The V8 Vantage was always a $300,000 car, I would assume that (based on a rumor) this car would be the cheapest of the Aston Martin lineup. I wouldn't bet on it being called Vantage and AMV8 name might be sketchy too.

Aston Martin have already said on numerous occasions that the name "V8 Vantage" would be a name they will use for this....
Plus a lot of the promo stuff sent to customers has already been titled "V8 Vantage"...

More news from AM regarding the AMV8 Vantage:
Aston Martin is all set to increase the pace of change again in 2005 with the introduction of the DB9 Volante in the spring followed by the all-new Aston MartinV8 Vantage in the summer.
The concept version of the V8 Vantage the AMV8 was shown at Detroit in 2003 and heralds a new era for the company. For the first time it takes Aston Martin into a new sportscar sector where it has not previously been represented, whilst together with the DB9 and Vanquish S it will increase annual production figures closer to 5000 cars per annum.
Dr Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin, said, "The last few years at Aston Martin have been a period of intense activity and 2005 is going to be even busier for us....."The summer sees the culmination of our model introduction programme with the launch of the V8 Vantage. I know a lot of people have been waiting to see the final version of this third model from Aston Martin.

i just read this in a german car mag:
Fords: Fisker Design for everybody. Henrik Fisker, ex Design boss of Aston Martin and responsible for the Ford Advanced Design, builds now together with a partner in the US Federal State California supersports car on own calculation. The Dane, who drew among other things the Aston Martin DB 9 and the V8 Vantage and before in the services of BMW, has now together with the German ex Ford designer Bernhard Koehler the Automanufaktur Fisker Coachbuild, LLC from the baptism lifted. Both know each other already from a co-operation with BMW and later with Fords. The focus of the new company is to be on the development and the building of exclusive supersports cars, by which maximally in each case 150 vehicles are to be presented. First drafts are to be published at the end of of 2005, the commencement of production are at present on center 2006 scheduled.
source: Auto Motor Sport
 for the bad translation sorry

If this car is the DB8 then they would have to name the next generation of it DB9?? that would do wonderful things for current db9 owners' egos

JBlair
01-27-2005, 09:27 PM
The only reason I could think that this would be DB8 is if the naming strategy would be static starting with the DB9. (They wouldn't change the number for the new-generation vehicles; so the DB9 would always be a DB9. With this strategy it would be interesting to see if the Vanquish would be given a DB moniker (DB10?), or be allowed to keep its name)

What a fantastic looking car , very beautiful Aston's progress has come quite far I even think they eclipse Ferrari in the beauty stakes.
People might moan that Aston are following the " One sausage in different size" term once inflicted at BMW . but with the Vanquish , The DB9 and this
- Well what a delicious looking Sausage!

DB5 would have made no sense whatsoever. To my knowledge, AML have never stuck an old DB name on a new car in their history, what makes you think they would (or even should) start now? DB8 makes perfect sense, it's effectively the model below the DB9 - also explains why the DB7 successor was the DB9 not the DB8.
AML have stated the Vanquish will always be the Vanquish, it won't get a DBxx-type name.

JBlair

but by that same token, the Vanquish should be DB10 since it slots in above the DB9.

Aston Martin tradition has it that it won't reuse type designations like for instance DB4 or DB5 or DB6 (which are legendary cars in their own right) For new models they just use whatever number is next in line, nothing confusing there. It's the way it's been done for decades. You don't see the next Ferrari supercar called 330 P3....

(hi i'm new =) )
the car is soo dropdead gorgeous...but how come there are two versions of taillights? 1 from the autoshow (gremlins??) and the other from the black testcar. Its not just the colour but the shape as well...the taillight from the black testcar resembles the AMV8 concept model and looks better
more over, how would its price compare with DB9? even though AM wanna make DB8 close to 997, but the interior, in terms of gauge and dash, is exactly the same than that from DB9...DB8 cannot be too much cheaper than DB9 can it?
if the price is similar to 997, everyone would go for DB8 then...

Yeah, he's starting up his own company... Fisker Coachworks (I think). Not that I think his hands were ever tied working for BMW or Aston Martin, but now he has free reign over the design. Of all the designers out their, I think he is at the top. Simon Cox over at GM Europe is also doing some great work. Also, there are a few designers over at DC too, even though I really don't like Chrysler. Contrary to everyone bagging on Toyota for their designs (I think some of them are really quite excellent), I think Honda is really the one putting out some bad, bad designs.

I actually like the TSX... a lot. In fact, that would the be 4 door sedan I would buy in its price range. I'd choose that over any Toyota 4-door available in North America. That, and the now defunct NSX prototye would be the exception. The S2000 is nice, but that came out quite a few years ago. What Honda is putting out nowadays, like the NA Accord, the RSX (facelift looks better, but the car is too pudgy in profile, and the C-pillar doesn't work for me). The Ridgeline and Pilot are also quite bad. The RL is also a bit off to me too. The forthcoming Civic (spypics), is growing on me, especially the rear.
