Im sick of car companies putting on those clear tail lights. Like I said before, they dont look good on EVERYTHING!

I caught these in the Phoenix, AZ area on Saturday. (Engineers putting in some overtime I guess). No significant changes discernable, but the chrome on the dash and the luggage rack seems to point this dog upscale a bit (only the Explo Limited and the Mntneer Premier offer anything but black). That handle on the rear glass under the wiper seems to be new too.

This thing is going to end up looking like a 5 door version of the Sport trac concept. The rear lights are even close to being identical, and the front should look about 95% the same.

Omg with that camo it looks like a Lincoln Aviator. Ford changing grills and moldings and making a new car out of it when will it end.
So all they changed was the grill, to me it looks ok.

Actually I think this face lift is more mechanical than visual so I guess it should be called a re-engineered Explorer?
Additionally, from 2002, the Explorer is all new (platform up) as far as I know....

Bolita, you are correct, the Explorer got an all new chassis.

The one huge mistake of the Explorer redesign was that it was yawn boring to look at. This tweak/update is a small step in the right direction. Now can they work some magic on the Freestyle and the Five Hundred?

I just dont get it that the restyle would not incorporate the 3 broad bar grille. The Explorer is still the best selling SUV in the US isnt it?

explorerJO
04-18-2005, 05:41 PM
Front end is okay. Better than my '03. But rear end restyle makes it look more like a minivan. I chose an Explorer because I wanted a truck-based SUV that looks like what it is - a truck not a van. Why did they eliminate the low cut of the rear window? I find it convenient though it never lines up correctly when it's shut. Did they eliminate all of the lower caldding? It looks cleaner without it but a little wimpy too. I think it needs the mass.

Bass-o-Matic
04-19-2005, 04:08 AM
Grille "bib" by VW, Grille insert from a Ford truck (at least that looks authentically Ford) and headlamps from Land Rover... You think they're trying to get an "upscale, tough" look on Explorer?
For one, I thought Explorer was tastefully designed, though I agree that the graphics could be more distinctive. Now, (especially after seeing clearer photos of this facelift, apparently the same vehicle as caught in these photos, on this week's MotorWeek) I think they've got a cluttered, derivative look coming. Too bad.

<<BMW donated the foodmaster kink, Audi/VW donated the large "shield" grille to the market>>
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Has everyone forgotten about the huge grille on the last Chrysler LHS? The giant grille is nothing new.

Today i was in Downtown Louisville, when all of a sudden i see the 2006 Ford Explorer parked on the side of the street with no camo!! It even had the badges, the color is like the one pic that is already here its like a wine red or salsa red however you wanan call it. The front looks very nice reminded me aot of the Sportrac Adrenaline. The rear as well looks very nice the lights are very nice kinda look like the Range Rover Sport. NO i didnt have a camera with me!! The Explorer manufacturing plant is here in Downtown Louisville where i saw the 06 Explorer, i will keep my eye wide open for this new Explorer. It looks VERY interesting and looks great!!! BTW it had dealer plates...

Ford should really rush a Hybrid Explorer ... Explorer sales would probably recover with a Hybrid version since the volume could probably keep costs down...

Expect a Freestyle hybrid first. It is larger than an explorer already and the gas models get mid-upper 20s mpg.

Roadster44

I think Hybrid Explorer is sometime away. Look at Toyota...it offered hybrid on lower end Highlander and then a mid range luxury SUV. Smart way to test out different markets.

The Explorer is perenially the best selling SUV in the United States BUT Ford is also having to do rebates as high as 5k to get them to move off the lots. If sales weren't soft there would be no need for rebates. The 05 Mustang has no rebates...doesn't need them. Hornbag,
as for the value judgement about "the humble American SUV icon" fading, I doubt that you are getting that the American market has 2 full-sized station wagons--SUVs are used as station wagons--and many people buy SUVs for their family hauling size. Aside from the Dodge Magnum and the Ford Stylefree there are no large wagons, and some people don't want to drive an incubator on wheels (minivan). I think there's a lot of life left in the SUV provided that the hybrid technology is focused there.

The whole chrome grille thing is starting to get to me, even the Fusions grille. Why doesnt every car maker have one? Well they might as well.
And yes it is very messy, the bars in the middle are too thin, the whole grille design is too short, and that tiny strip of chrome on the top looks faul! And dont let me go on about the un-body coloured perice of crap on the bottom! I think they will need some bloddy good photographers to make this car look good...
Thx everyone for answering my questions too!

Dodger

Exactly, the car does not have all its cladding. The tan front cladding would run along the wheel wells and lower body of the production version- just like the current Eddie Bauer editions.

Why does everyone think that the headlights are LR style? The current Explorer has the big circle/little circle headlamps and the Ranger has them too both before the LR. The LR has Explorer-style lights. And I like the big grilles but this one's too fussy.

i've always liked the (current) explorer, and this facelift looks nice. the only thing that concerns me though, is that they're keeping the same V6 as the base model. hopefully it'll eventually get the duratec 35 or something. i also hope this new explorer gets a new interior, the current one is okay but falling behind the competition (there might be a picture a few pages back, i haven't looked, don't flame me if there is)
