"Audi 4.2L DOHC V-8
By Bill Visnic
WardsAuto.com, Jan 4 2005
Audi's power-packed 4.2L DOHC V-8 takes a second consecutive Ward's 10 Best Engines win.
This is a little embarrassing, but rather than admit it under duress when the Special Council starts an investigation, we'll own up now: Several of our editors may - may - have made Audi's marvelous 4.2L DOHC V-8 a 10 Best Engines winner without even driving it.
Because just firing up this thing produces an exhaust note so mellifluous - so criminally sensual - there's almost no need to leave the garage. The drug makers had better keep an eye on Audi AG, because if the German auto maker figures out a way to bottle the 4.2L V-8's exhaust sounds, Viagra and Levitra will be out of a job.
Audi's 4.2L V-8 is the exemplar of how to do exhaust. Perfectly. At idle, the aural deepness inspires a quiet nirvana. At full throttle, there's a sonorous, fine-machinery rip that no other V-8 can rival. And at all engine speeds between, a virtual rainbow of intoxicating intake and exhaust arias demands your constant attention. Audi's cars fitted with the 4.2L V-8 - it's in everything from the S4 and the allroad to the all-new S6 and the flagship A8/S8 - should have a stereo-system delete option.
All right, we're done slobbering about the sound. Beyond that, Audi's 4.2L V-8 is a virtual dynamo. It's the smallest-displacement V-8 in what we broadly define as the "premium V-8 class" of less than 5L (see below) - yet it's the most powerful. And although its 302 lb.-ft. (409 Nm) of torque lags its competition slightly, it's right on the mark when considering torque per liter:
Audi 4.2L 340 hp/302 lb.-ft. (409 Nm)
BMW 4.4L 325 hp/330 lb.-ft. (447 Nm)
Cadillac 4.6L 320 hp/315 lb.-ft. (427 Nm)
Lexus 4.3L 290 hp/320 lb.-ft. (434 Nm)
Mercedes 4.3L 275 hp/295 lb.-ft. (400 Nm)
Volkswagen 4.2L 335 hp/317 lb.-ft. (430 Nm)
Volvo 4.4L 311 hp/325 lb.-ft. (441 Nm)
Audi's 4.2L V-8 fronts impressive numbers, but its deeper beauty is its game-stopping flexibility and throttle response. This is a sports-car engine masquerading as a premium V-8, so there's the best of both worlds: Flexibility that allows you to ignore the gear lever (in the S4, the 4.2L V-8 is backed by a 6-speed manual gearbox with equally premium shift effort), but always ready to unleash a torrent of power from idle to redline. Several testers are convinced that from the midrange on, nothing short of a Ferrari or Porsche 911 can stay with an S4 at full throttle.
And did we mention the sound?"
http://subscribers.wardsauto.c...id=26
http://subscribers.wardsauto.c...id=26

2006 Honda Civic Wins Motor Trend Car of the Year

Torrance, Calif. 11/22/2005 -- The all-new Honda Civic earned Motor Trend magazine's prestigious 2006 Car of the Year award, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. The award extends to the entire Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe lineup including the environmentally responsible Civic Hybrid and high-performance Civic Si models.
The Motor Trend editorial staff selected the Honda Civic from a field of 28 new or substantially revised models - the largest to date - recognizing it for exceptional value, superiority in its class and the most significant development on the new-car scene for 2006. Testing took place over a two-week period that included thousands of miles of on-track driving and on-street evaluation, along with several days of walk-around appraisals.
"For 2006, the Civic underwent the most radical transformation in its 33-year history," said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda. "It is a cornerstone of the Honda lineup, and we're delighted that Motor Trend has recognized the new levels of styling, performance, technology, safety and value that characterize the new Civic. Customers have validated our direction too, as evidenced by strong sales of the new model."
The 2006 Honda Civic establishes new segment standards for safety, technology and performance. Clean and efficient i-VTEC(TM) engine technologies deliver more power than ever before while still achieving an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 40 miles per gallon. In keeping with Honda's "Safety for Everyone" initiative, the Honda Civic features advanced standard safety equipment including side curtain airbags, front side airbags and the Advanced Compatibility Engineering(TM) (ACE(TM)) Body Structure, regardless of price or trim level.
The most noticeable features of the 2006 Civic include its expressive exterior styling, a high-tech and spacious interior, and fun-to-drive performance. The Civic further rewards drivers and passengers with as many as seven ways to enjoy audio entertainment - including XM(R) Satellite Radio, MP3 and WMA support and an accessory Apple(R) iPod(R) adapter that connects the popular music player to the Civic's audio controls.
The Civic Hybrid provides the ultimate in clean and efficient technology with a 1.3-liter i-VTEC engine and a new generation of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology that helps the hybrid achieve an estimated city/highway fuel economy of 49/51 miles per gallon and an Advanced-Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) rating. Additionally, the Civic Hybrid can deactivate all four of its cylinders and operate using only the electric motor in certain low-speed cruising situations.
The Civic Si showcases the high-performance potential of the Civic platform and offers a 197-horsepower, DOHC 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine connected to a 6-speed manual transmission and a limited slip differential.
The majority of Civics are produced and assembled using domestic and globally sourced parts in the United States and Canada. Civic Coupe and Civic Si models are solely produced and assembled at the Honda of Canada Manufacturing plant in Alliston, Ontario. Civic Sedan models are primarily produced and assembled at the Honda of America Manufacturing plant in East Liberty, Ohio. Civic Sedans are also produced and assembled at Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston, Ontario. Some Civic Sedans and all Civic Hybrid models are produced and assembled in the Honda Motor Co., Ltd., Suzuka, Japan, manufacturing facility.
A list of previous Honda winners in Motor Trend polling includes:
1994 Honda Accord - Import Car of the Year
1988 Honda CRX Si - Import Car of the Year
1984 Honda Civic CRX - Import Car of the Year
1980 Honda Civic - Import Car of the Year
http://www.motortrend.com/feat..._year/
Source: http://www.VTEC.net

Although I do think the Civic is a fine vehicle, the only breakthrough the Civic presents is its two-tier IP.
I'm sure there was a more qualified candidate, considering how, for the past two years, MT has picked cars that were actually of significance (the 300 marked the return of the popularity of RWD sedans, the Prius marked a significant evolution in technology).

11-24-2005, 05:24 PM
Yeah I'm a bit surprised by this, too. But when you look at the other choices:

Audi A3, BMW 3 Series, Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion, Honda Civic, Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Azera, Hyundai Sonata, Infiniti M35/M45, Kia Rio, Lexus GS, Lexus IS, Lincoln Zephyr, Mazda 5, Mazda MX-5, Mercedes-Benz CLS, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, Mercury Milan, Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, Pontiac Solstice, Toyota Avalon, Volkswagen Jetta, and Volkswagen Passat.
Nothing really stood out. The IS and 3-series are both critically about even, as is the Solstice to the Miata and the GS to the M's, so as hokey as it sounds, the only other car I would have picked would be the Avalon.

11-24-2005, 07:54 PM
I would think the Mazda5 is much better a candidate. It's more groundbreaking and significant.
