View Full Version : GM Badge to Grace all GM Vehicles

From Today's Automotive News:

Quote »

GM hangs corporate badge on North American vehicles
DETROIT -- General Motors is putting its corporate logo on the exterior of nearly all the cars and trucks it sells in North America.
The change begins this week with Pontiac G6 cars leaving the factory, a GM spokeswoman said, and will be added to other vehicles when they are redesigned or when time permits tooling changes.
Under that time schedule, it could be some time before the GM badge appears on Saab vehicles. The next new Saab product, the 9-7x SUV, won't have the GM badge when it arrives in showrooms late this summer.
GM says the move is an effort to get consumers to draw a stronger connection between the automaker and its brands. "Seeing that GM badge on vehicles evokes our heritage of leadership," said Mark LaNeve, group vice president for vehicle sales, service and marketing for GNorth America.
The effort begins with Pontiac G6 cars that are leaving the factory this week, a GM spokeswoman said.
Many 2006 models will have a silver GM badge placed on both sides of the vehicle, somewhere between the front and rear wheels and below the beltline. On cars, the badge measures about 1-inch square. On trucks and SUVs, beginning with the redesigned full-sized SUVs to be introduced early next year, the badge measures about 1.2 inches square.
EV1 wore the GM badge
This is not the first time the GM badge has been used on a vehicle exterior. The EV1 electric vehicle wore a GM badge on its nose, even though leases were handled by Saturn dealers. The EV1 was leased from 1996 through 2001.
The GM logo was affixed to many of the automakers vehicles in the 1960s and '70s, although it wasn't always easy to see.
Many of the automaker's concept vehicles in those decades included a GM Styling badge that included the logo, the spokeswoman said.
Better known, though, was GM's "Mark of Excellence" advertising theme. As part of that, the familiar GM logo with blue background was placed on the back edge of the driver's door or on the door jamb.
Also during that time, the logo was put on the door sill plates above the rocker panels, along with division logos. But not every GM division did that, the spokeswoman said.
GM has not decided whether to put logo into vehicle interiors, the spokeswoman said. Nor had it decided if it will use the exterior badge strategy globally.

I have to ask, who was the marketing Idiot who came up with this idea. Doesn't GM realize that people perceive GM as a misguided corporate Giant. I would wager that GM's individual brand badges (most but not all) have greater positive recognition value with consumers that GM's tired old letters.

tough call right now...especially since it's just a minor adjustment...I am in the middle as of now, as this move could work well for GM, or GM could flunk even more and waste even more money

I thought this was a joke when I first read it. What idiot would think that a GM badge on their car would actually help them? I mean, GM the corporate monolith is seen as the reason why all these cars are so bad, not the reason they are any good.
I'm starting to come around to the new Cadillacs, something I never thought I'd do. But when I think of a GM badge on the side, no matter how small, the reminder just turns me off completely.

I don't know...couldn't it be the beginning of all GM brands to disappear and be simply badged GM ?

It's just going to remind me of all the nightmares I had with my '86 Cutlass Ciera. Thumbs down on this move.

Exactly Lakeshow23 it brings back old negative memories of boxes on wheels. The design even looks outdated. This is just plain stupid. Get rid of GMC and Buick and begin to produce good cars then worry about a badge. They are doing everything, but building great cars.

I said this on another forum and I'll say it again...who is going to want the same badge on their 70 thousand dollar cadillac that also comes on a 7 thousand dollar saturn?

What's wrong with the air at GM headquarters. It seems to kill off brain cells really quickly. As Nick said, why would a person buying a $70K luxury car like a Cadillac want to be visibly associated with Aveos and mouse fur. Dumb, dumb, dumb. This should be obvious to anyone, unless this is a first stem in getting rid of a few brands and combining them into one monster GM brand.
"Well sir, would you like your $70,000 Lexus with Toyota or Scion badges? How about the Maybach, did you prefer Smart or Dodge badges?"

Yeah, I don't see the reason behind this. IMO, the badge would ruin the lines of cars such as various Cadillacs and the Pontiac Solstice... Hopefully GM does not put the badge on Saabs. I do not like GM owning Saab in the first place, but having a GM badge on it!? If I were to buy a Saab (Or Cadillac for that matter), I would pay the dealer $50 just to take it off so that I don't see it again...

probably...frankly, GM already puts their badges all over the cars such as on the floor mats and on the keys and in minor inconspicuous places...

GM in Japan put's it's "GM" badge on the back of the Holden/Chevrolet Cruze, which is a compact AWD 5dr Hatch, which is a Suzuki Ignis clone.

Does this include overseas brand such as Vauxhall and Holden as well?
I personally don't like the idea. The GM brand is in disarray currently, and slapping those badges on other cars could possibly have a negative effect. It'd be a lot better if GM got their financial situation solved and then, and only then, put the GM badges on.

Mmmmmm...
Well at least it help identify the cars better...

Something tells me that "stronger conncetion" comment in the article isn't the only reason for the badge. There may be a stronger connction between those vehicles, but what kind of stronger connection is up to consumers to make and I doubt it will be a positive one. I mean come on... imagine Ford doing this w/ all of their brands. Would you like you Jaguar w/ a Ford badge sir? Your Aston Martin? Your LR? I don't think so. IMO those brands are better off standing alone and so are GM's.
But every problem is a opportunity in disguise and therefore I'm going to open a badge removal service and get rich.
