Ford Thunderbird is off the line official. The last car will leave the factory in July 2005. The reason is: Sales failure.. They only sold 55,000 cars in 3 years, and the decided to take it off.

The problem was that the styling dated too quickly. I saw some of the other design proposals that merged into this car, and if they had produced one of the others this car might have had a longer life.

Dated!? It was only designed off a car that was made in the 50's....not dated at all... :P ...no but seriously, the old classics are timeless in their designs...but i do however agree with you somewhat...though I think it just sufferred the same downfall like the ssr...it was priced a bit too high...

It was a good car, but not to my taste (by the sounds, not a lot of otheres 2)

don't know. think that many american cars try to do "old skool", designing cars as they were a long time ago. For example Mustang.. Americans should really try to look at German designes, and follow them. Germans have success in all of their cars..

JBlair youre dead on accurate. The retro influenced Tbird was far too tame. Compare it with the 2005 Mustang for "heritage" cues and anyone can see that J Mays did not go far enough on the T Bird. The nose actually looked more like a late 50's Corvette. People were instantly bored with the car. It was not especially fast, but it was expensive. The Tbird was dead in the water from the start. Instead of doing a major revamp of the styling, Ford did an "oh well there is nothing we can do" response.

Yep, it's too bad this car is going to be done soon, the only one I saw is h. berry's in james bond, and I will take her over any car, maybe i will take a car and get her damn

I love the Thunderbird its such a shame, it never had any recalls and out of all the Fords it had the best quality .In NY you can buy a new one for about $32k.

Ok, I have some good news for those who like this car so much... It is said that even though it will go off the line in July, they will release it from time to time in very limited number...So you still have the chance to buy it later...

ok guys some more news from Ford.. As you already know they are finishing off the Thunderbird, and now they said that Ford StreetKa will go off the line too..The only reason is: Very old model, which means that people are not interested in this model anymore.. They are getting rid of these 2 cars also to unveil new Ford Focus Vignale.. StreetKa will not even make it into limited edition like Thunderbird will.. So bye bye Thunderbird, and StreetKa...Hello Focus Vignale... first pic is StreetKa, and second is Vignale

The StreetKa actually did ok, sales where within what Ford expected for it ( 15k/year ), but it was always seen as a fashion thing, it was never expected to last that long. Also, Pinin will be making the Focus CC too, and probably doesn't have that much space on their factory.
Has for the T-bird, could they have made a duller interior? And like AM2 said, why would you buy one if you can buy a Mustang for less?

It's sad that the Ford Thunderbird is dead. The car itself was built better than the average Ford car/truck on the road. They spent a lot of time making it perfect... but the drivetrain.
Maybe if they added this type off idea to a more useible car, it would have had more success.

I believe the Thunderbird failed because of it's high price and lack of a back seat. It seems like Ford could have lowered the price by making a v6 model available as in the LS. Since the Thunderbird was meant to be a car to tour around in and not a sports car, having no back seat does not make sense to me. You simply can't take your friends to the beach or for a summer drive. It's a shame because the two or three around here get tons of stares.
