View Full Version : Does the "interior car smell" matter in your opinion?

This may sound a little obsessive, but what car smells do you like, and does a new car smell from certain companies sway you into buying certain cars or not? What does your car's interior currently smell like?
Here's my list:
Favorite scent (products you can buy from a store): Leather "air freshner" trees.
Favorite new car smell (different companies have their certain "scent"): Any, but I'm hooked on Dodge for some reason.
Worst car smell: Any fruit or cologne-scented products. It doesn't smell like a car scent, and the fruit ones get me hungry.
Currently: Our car smells like a mix between leather, pine and Old Spice (dad uses too much of it).
It'll be interesting to hear what others think of car scents.

Unless other materials (such as leather) exist in enough abundance to emit their own odor, PVC should smell pretty much the same whether the vehicle is made in one part of the world or another.

Yes its basically residual odor from the plastics, but the different processes used usually end up with some slight diferences from one car to another. I've read someplace, but can't remember where that some carmakers use specific chemicals in the plastics that keep the 'new car smell' lasting for a much longer period. This is most evident in luxury cars, whereas that of bread and butter cars goes almost immediately.
Here's an article from Audi's south africa website that explains how seriously this "new car smell" stuff is taken in making cars.http://www.audi.co.za/news/arc...D=682

Yes. Some smell better than others. My Hyundai XG300 had a strange smell. My Element was pleasant. My VWs have all been intoxicating. Wonder what a Ferrari smells like?

It is said that the Chrylser group (Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler) smell is within the carpet. You can go to a section of the carpet that gets covered (like the kick panel area or the left over carpet under the rear seat) a couple of years later and you can still smell the original smell.

PS. I don't think any Nissan has a good smell or even a smell at all. Is it just me?

It's the fumes from the plastic going to your head. They make everybody feel good.

I don't like new car smells, from most any car. It's annoying. I get carsick sometimes, when I'm not the driver. The American cars take the cake here. I always get carsick in those.
