A few new introductions are about to take the market such as the new 3er and the new IS350.
The lexus IS seems like it will be a great car with an improvement of almost 100hp over the previous model in addition to being superior in almost every way to its predecessor. In my opinion, it is a better choice than the 3er. However, I'd definately go for the AWD Legacy if one was going to get a car with a stick.
I wouldn't worry about having 50 less hp than the lexus, since 0-60 times are already in the mid 5 second range and since aftermarket modifications are readily available. Also I think subaru is considering an sti version of the legacy with a turbo version of their 3L H-6 making over 350hp with pricing still under 40K.

Nice list. I know that you can only add so many choices, but I thought it nly fair that the Category be expanded to include other valid choices that fall within your parameters:
Chrysler 300C
Dodge Charger
Volvo S60
Volvo S40
Mazda 6 MPS
Holden Comodore
Nissan Maxima
Nissan Altima
VW Passat (the new one)
Alfa Romeo 156
The CTS with the 3.6L is a great car. It still looks fresh after four years.
