I think that chevy should drop the malibu name And make up a new name to go with that small-mid sized car,the name had a good rep until they made a wimpy 4-door in the late 90's to compete with established nameplates like toyota camry, we all know what a camry is and it was for years, then chevy turns around and makes a muscle car into a mommy mobile.they are smoking somthing at GM and it must be good.I mean they turned the impala into a slow, granny gas guzzler,my god,the impala used to be a hot car, they sold a whole lot in the 60's,70',80's and early 90's they designed some s*** to market and thought it was a hit, hell no! it wasnt I just cant stand it, look at what they did to the monte carlo, they turned it into a mini-me impala, and gave it such discusting styling, the monte carlo was a bad a** car in the 80's ,now it's just a full-size option at AVIS,WTF! GM. why did GM have to cancel the camaro?,WHY!!!????,GM! the S***is hittin' the fan now and yall better get somthing right, yall cancelled zeta and them 900's better be some bomb-A** designs, cause this is the end, and anymore nutty ideas could sink the company and yall will be replaced by toyota as the largest auto maker, and get bought out by micheal jackson, who knows, 2005 is a crazy year and some s*** gone go down. OK,finished with my furious-ness

I think everyone is hatin GM nowadays...it's sad to see such a great car company just take a dump...but remember, the malibu was just a gorcery getter too...then came the chevelle trim level and then it just turned into a chevelle...so really, the muscle car is under the chevelle name and not so much under the malibu's...and as far as the imapalas go..the early-mid 90's impalas were great cars, especially in SS trim...they were the last of the good Impalas and the last chevy worthy of the SS moniker really...

No offence, please, this is just my opinion ok...
I think Americnas (not all, on a general biased, and steriotypical way) like to kick something when its down...Like they did to Ford. Now they are doing the same to Micheal Jackson, and GM...
just my view...

Ford is still down.......
RG,
Impalas and Malibus were grocery getters and simple transportation then and now. Nothing to get excited about.
I agree with you regarding GM, they've got a problem and they know it.

You know what, at least Chevy still names its cars even if they are using classic nameplates on crap cars. What I think is much worse is all of the companies going to these hideous alphanumeric combinations, like Caddilac. I know the Seville name was worn out, but STS means nothing to anyone. They could have at least tried to come up with something new. Same goes for Acura renaming Legend to 3.5RL... am I supposed to get excited by that combination of letters and numbers? And how is RL better than TL, anyway. Is the letter T supposed to exude more sport anf the letter R more luxury. Come on. If these were computers I could care less, but I miss the days when cars had proper names, save the letters for the special editions maybe... like Impreza WRX.

Hornbag,
As an American, I can tell you that the kicking of GM is a pride thing. In the 50's and 60's GM made many memorable gotta-have cars. I was only a kid in the 60's but there was genuine excitement and real product differentiation. Now GM is being crass and trying to palm off old and outdated technology as cutting edge stuff. The anger toward GM is well justified. They let us down. Chevy used to have a slogan: "Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet." A person used to drive a Chevy with a sense of pride. Now if you drive a Chevy it is likely that you really wanted a Toyota but GM had a bazillion dollar rebate so you voted with your wallet. GM is still staggering with its styling badly. The Buick LaCrosse is an old-wine-new-bottle approach to a supposedly "all-new" design. GM needs radical surgery to its product line up. They need to consolidate dealers.
Chevy should have Cobalt, Malibu, Impala, Camaro, Corvette, Nomad (think something half way between a minivan and a station wagon), pickups and SUVs,
Pontiac should have a Tempest (think a drop-dead gorgeous restyle of the G6), Solstice, GTO, Grand Prix (think Monte Carlo type of vehicle)
Buick should have LaCrosse, Lucerne, Riviera (up-scale coupe)
Saturn: Kill it. It duplicates the Chevy price range
Cadillac: CTS, STS, DTS, SRX, XLR, Sixteen, Escalade (no sheetmetal in common with the other GM900s)
GMC: Gone

Ahh chevy's... Some look quite cool, Trailblazer, etc, but some other ones are horrid. Some are quite good cars, but others are trash. I think they really need to get updated mechanically and some need new designs....
I really like the Chevy one of the members here posted once, I think it's his. I think it's you Nick? the Pickup? If it is you, let's have another look at it please!!

The Malibu is doing fine. It'd be doing even better with a normal-looking front. Along with the success of the Cobalt and Equinox evidence that the Chevy' brand still has traction...

the malibu, IMO, is the best midsize american car in years, and is more or less a viable competitor to the accord and camry (it isn't as good as those two, but it isn't far behind either and it's cheaper). the V-6 apparently also feels more powerful than its horsepower rating would suggest, if some of the reviews i've read are correct. the cobalt is good too, although CR gave it a lukewarm review (they said it was vastly improved over the cavalier, but still an "average" small sedan). anyway, GM is capable of making good cars, they're just way too big, that's basically the whole problem. and those darn medicare or whatever-they-are costs that cost GM billions every year..

Well, GM is known of underrating their engines, so the 3.5 could very possibly be more powerful than it really is...

People hold grudges against GM, and while in some cases it is legitimate, GM really has been trying hard to turn around lately, and some of their products show they are trying and doing better...believe it or not, GM can really make a competent car, and they could make it even better if they got rid of the bean counters...

The domestics used to update their styling every three years or so with trim changes every year. The first Mustang was reskinned after 2 1/2 years in the market for example, and that was fairly common. GM needs to do radical surgery to their product line. Im of the mindset that Chevy should be a full line brand, Pontiac should have 1-3 models that are very sporty, Buick should have 2 near luxury sedans, and Cadillac should be a full-line luxury division. Sell Saab, kill Saturn, and sell Cadillac and Hummer together with the rest in one dealership.
