If GM had to get rid of a brand, which one would you want them to get rid of?

they should kill buick and sell saab to SIAC or Renault-Nissan

buick and hummer are my least favorites, but it's hard to say really. pontiac is getting the solstice, so its getting some good product, and buick is starting to look good too. i just hate hummer though, those should be made for military use only. IMO GM should, at least in america, only have 3 brands to have as little redundancy as possible: chevy, cadillac, and (insert any current GM brand except for hummer here). saab shouldn't be dropped, GM just needs to actually TRY making good saabs. IMO the third current GM brand they should keep is buick, pontiac just makes all chevys redundant (and the solstice could be a chevy anyway), and the good saturns (aura, any future opel-based cars) could just be chevrolets. buick would be a nice brand to have in between chevy and cadillac.

Hummer isn't built by GM.

It's an independent company using GM parts and contracts. The company doesn't even have union.

GM should get rid of Pontiac... their sporting image and marketing doesn't translate into sporty cars. Buick is doing too well in China, but then again, with the average Buick buyer age in the 60s, it seems like the only Buick buyers in 20 years will be Avis and Hertz... Hummer has way too high of profit margains along with GMC to dump, even if they're not selling any.

IMO, GM should get rid of a ton of redindant brands and narrow things down to 4 or 5 well defined brands which they can sell globally, thus creating a solid global image that people can cross-shop and be aware of no matter what country they are in.
They should keep the following brand names:
- Chevrolet - Middle income cars and trucks of every type.
- Cadillac -Luxury and high-luxury vehicles of every type.
- Opel - Upper middle-income/entry level luxury and sport vehicles
- Saab - Executive/Luxury-sport
- Daewoo - Entry level vehicles.
IMO every other brand is ill defined and carries way to much overlap to make sense. They should continue to produce the same volumes, but try to reduce the number of duplicative and half baked vehicles into these few, well defined and executed brands, all over the world.

Global brands, recognized anywhere on earth, with a clear message of what they stand for. But why would you reintroduce Daewoo, and how "upper middle-income" do you suggest Opel should go? Volkswagen seems to have tried that and it didn't work out all that well.

Kill Saturn. Begin to focus the mission of each brand and eliminate all the EXCESSIVE rebadges (For example, 4 CSVs? Who are they kidding?)
If Buick is meant to compete with Lexus, then MAKE THEM COMPETITIVE. Despite what they say, LaCrosse and Lucerne MIGHT begin to compete with Chrysler, but NOT Lexus to be sure. And the French name thing does nothing.
In a time when the U.S. domestic market is seeing a horsepower resurgence, there is NO EXCUSE for the "performance" brand to be suffering like it is. Solstice, GTO and the GXPs are a good start, but Pontiac needs to get more aggressive about going after this market. If GM's finances dictate it has to get rebadges, then fine (so long as they don't share obvious sheetmetal). Differentiate the engine options and the interior appointments. Chevrolet's Cobalt has surprisingly won wide support among the rice-burner crowd, give Pontiac a version to bolster its lineup and fill the void left by the outgoing Sunfire.
GM is now saying that the planned ULV (ultra-luxury vehicle) for Cadillac will be going ahead as planned. In that case, give this $100 - $125K car to either Buick (as a ULV) or Pontiac (as a hi-performance supercar) to generate public and media excitement for these ailing brands.

i dont entirely agree w/ you on that last point, but dont give them ideas, or there may be 4 versions of the ULC as well

There should be the option to say "none of them" It is better to salvage the existing brands than to destroy an established name.

saturn... its time to give up and admit defeat. if they are just going to turn it into rebadged opels anyway at least they could bring over the opel badge

I think GM should keep
- Chevrolet as the mainstream car and truck brand
- Cadillac as the luxury car and truck brand
- GMC as the commercial/fleet-only truck brand
- Saturn as the youth-oriented car brand
And then I think GM should
- Stop selling Daewoo rebadges in the US
- Stop rebadging vehicles (GMC would be an exception)

buick seems pointless
- the reineer seems like a copy of envoy denali
- the lacrosse is a dressed up version of impala/grand prix
- the rendezvous is an inferior vehicle that is very unpopular
- the terraza is a copy of the chevy/pontiac/saturn versions
- the other three sedans are arguably the worst in their category. pontiac and chevy have better vehicles in teh same categories
... also pontiac can be combined with chevy, but then mercury can be combined with ford

Although getting rid of Pontiac might have more sense than any of the others, They'd do us all a favour by getting rid of Saturns... Yuck!

Saturns can go, Pontiacs are better known and are more desirable.
