I swear every time we have a thread like this, it is soooo predictable. 95% of the people pick new cars, and almost everyone includes either supercars or some current cars from some of the major luxury manufacturers. Guys expand your horizons. There have been wonderful vehicles produced for a very long time.

I think it has a lot to do with the age factor...most members in this forum are too young to know about the "old school" cars, of which some are just as amazing as the most of the current ones.
I think the title of this thread should be top 5 cars you would like to own but cannot afford. So far the majority of the responses are cars only if you have cash to throw around - that's what these cars are for.
I think it's the trend these days that people buy cars for the purposes of how other people would think/view them. They care too much about what other people think but can't take a stand for themselves

3 cheers for Paul and knicks
Finally someone who understands. With the exception of the Jaguar (and maybe the ferrari) I can actually afford any one of the cars on my list (notice I only said one). I think you are right in saying that our members are mostly young and just don't know much, but we were all once in the same boat. To our younger members I say, go out and learn about cars that came before and the histories of the marques you love. I'm not talking about depression era cars, but any cars from years past that have a special something about them. I guarantee that whatever made them special in their day, largely still holds true for those vehicles today.
Just check out what a late 1970's 911 carrera can do, and then take note that the car had virtually no driver's aides or safety equipment (except maybe seatbelts). the car might not perform to the spec of it's modern counterpart, but I guarantee that a) you will have to know what you're doing in order to drive one fast; and b) it's going to be one hell of a fun and white knuckled drive!

Maybe there should be a poll, 5 cars you would still like to own in 10 years' time? That way you eliminate the current fads and make people think about the vast automotive oeuvre.
For what it's worth, I'd like a Jaguar XK150FHC and a MKII, a crew cab Land Rover Defender 130, an Auburn Speedster and, hmmm...I don't know. Maybe a classic Range Rover from 1970.

Guys, read the title of the thread 'Top 5 cars' not like 10 or 15.
BTW, since Santeno's all wrapped up about us not liking old cars - I must say I would certainly love to have a Citroen DS, BMW 2002, Toyota AE86 Trueno and a Audi Quattro. See? I do like old cars - I just think newer ones are better.

I'm just saying, If you like it, let us know - just try to excercise some through thought about your choices.
It's kind of like the difference between driving a Ferrari F430, driving a Ferrari Dino from the late 60's. They are both beautiful cars in their own right and sure the F430 can eat the dino for breakfast in terms of performance. But where the F430 says young guy with too much money or older man with too young a girlfriend, the dino says "Connoisseur" (plus it's much less common so it will really stand out in a crowd).
