Why is it called T5? I know that it has 5 cylinders, but are they poistioned in the shape of a T?

well volvo currently only calls its five (and six) cylinder models T5 (or T6) if it has a turbo, so i assume T5 means Turbocharged 5 cylinder

the technical names for volvo's 5-cylinder engines are
B5234FT - 2.4L turbo
B5254F - 2.4L NA

The T5 as in the S60 T5 actually refers to the specific trim level of that model, it doesn't specifically mean turbo 5-cylinder engine, that is just a coincidence, vovlo has a really strange way of specifying the trim levels
Volvo also has the S60 2.5T, this T does mean turbo however and it is also a 5 cylinder model
Volvo also has the S60 R, no, this R does not mean rotory engine , it is just another name to specify its trim level
Trim levels for s60:
S60 2.4 (2.4L)
S60 2.5T (2.5L low pressure turbo)
S60 T5 (2.4L high output)
S60 R (2.5L high output)
So no, it wasn't a stupid question (no offense olegk), it's volvo's naming system that is stupid and doesn't follow any specific pattern

So the T5 engine in the S40 is actually an inline five cylinder engine with Turbo?

T5 refers to a trim level that includes a 2.4L high output (relatively speaking) 5-cylinder Turbo engine

so yes, a S40 T5 has a 2.4L Turbo 5-cylinder engine and various other amenities that the base model does not have

"T" means nothing. my dad has a 2005 S60 2.0T. it has a turbo but on the trunk of the car there is not T5 written. "T" is just a ''name'' used by volvo to express that it is just a better version of the car. just like "S" "T" "R" etc

I think there is only one trim level in each model that contains the T_ nameplate. I don't think there will be a trim with the T_ nameplate, but without a turbocharged engine though.

The first time i saw the 'T5' thing on a volvo was some 10 or so years ago, in the 850 T5, which featured a brand new (at that time) turbocharged 5 cylinder. That's all i know, imaybe now it means something else ...

the only 4cyl. engines that volvo has are 1.6 and 1.8 but they are not 1.6T or 1.8T. the 2.0T is 5 cylinder.
again: T means turbo
