The bigger portion of notices, accounting for 3,500 of the number, relate to the possibility that the car's alternator pulley could seize, causing the alternator drive belt to be displaced, and resulting in over-heavy steering and braking effort being required. Kia is promising to replace the faulty pulley at no cost to the owner.
The remaining 1,152 cars require replacement automatic transmissions due to the possibility that a retaining ring inside the gearbox has worked its way loose, allowing the car to roll forward whilst in reverse gear. Again, Kia is pledging to replace the gearbox free of charge.
Sorento owners are being contacted by letter; those wishing to find out if their car is included should contact their local dealer, or phone 0118 945 8545.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a circuit problem could cause the lights to stop working, which could lead to a crash.
GM spokesman Alan Adler said there have been no injuries related to the defect. GM dealers will repair the lights for free.
NHTSA also said GM is recalling 35,777 of its 2005 Pontiac G6 sedans because the owner's manual doesn't say there is a child restraint anchor in the middle of the back seat. NHTSA said owners could have difficulty installing child seats if they aren't aware of the anchor.
Adler said GM will mail information about the child seat anchors to G6 owners this month.

GM plans to recall 2 million vehicles
Seat belt trouble, fuel pump wires and parking brakes are latest problems.
By Jeff Plungis / Detroit News Washington Bureau
What's being recalled

2003-05 Full-size SUVs and crew cab pickups
2000-01 Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL
1999-2002 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra pickup
2005 Buick Lacrosse
2004 Buick Rendezvous, Pontiac Aztek
2002-04 Saturn L Series wagon

What to do

If you do not receive a letter in the next few weeks, contact your dealer for information.
Log on to http://www.mygmlink.com to register your vehicle. You will receive electronic notices, including service reminders and recalls affecting your vehicle.
Vehicle recalls
Find the history of recalls on your model by searching the database issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Comment on this story
Send this story to a friend
Get Home Delivery

WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp., which led the industry in recalls last year, announced six recalls Monday, affecting more than 2 million vehicles.
The recalls -- to fix seat belts, stalling problems and other defects -- are the latest challenge for GM, which last week announced a $1.1 billion first-quarter loss.
The cost of notifying customers and repairing the vehicles could cost the automaker tens of millions of dollars.
The largest of the recalls announced Monday involves the seat belt in the center of the back seat in 10 large pickups and SUVs, covering 1.5 million vehicles.
A loop that routes the belt over the lap is placed too high, GM said, putting the belt over the stomach instead of the hips. It could lead to internal injuries in a crash.
Owners of the affected trucks will be notified by letter, said GM spokesman Alan Adler. No mailing has been established.
At the dealer, the belt loop will be relocated to ensure that the belt rides lower across the lap.
GM said it was conducting the recall after discovering the problem during testing. It has not received complaints and it knows of no injuries that have occurred due to the design flaw.
"Our commitment to promoting safety and to reminding everyone to buckle up properly on every trip led us to this decision," said Robert Lange, executive director of structure and safety integration.
The recall affects the Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab, Suburban, Tahoe and Avalanche; the Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT; the GMC Sierra Crew Cab, Yukon and Yukon XL; and the Hummer H2 from the 2003, 2004 and 2005 model years.
The move comes less than a week after the federal government announced a probe that could lead to the recall of 3.1 million pickups to repair tail gate cables. GM recalled 4.1 millions pickups last year to repair a similar problem.
This year, GM has recalled 3.4 million vehicles worldwide, including 2.9 million in the United States. In the first four months of 2004, GM recalled 9.1 million worldwide, including 8.5 million in America.
GM announced five other recalls Monday:
The Chevrolet Suburban and Yukon XL from 2000 and 2001 for possible overheating of fuel pump wires that could lead to stalling, failure to start, fuel leaks or inaccurate fuel level readings. The recall covers 332,202 vehicles.
The 1500 series of the Chevy Silverado between 1999-2002 and GMC Sierra pickups, the 2500 and 3500 series, between 2001-04, to repair the parking brake. The recall only affects trucks with manual transmissions, a total of 142,585 vehicles. Friction can lead to parking brake failures, which could allow unattended vehicles to move, GM said.
A brake problem with 69,037 2005 Buick Lacrosse and Buick Allure (sold only in Canada) sedans has led to a recall to repair a clip that secures the brake pushrod to the brake pedal arm pin. The clip could bend and come off, causing loss of braking power.
The Buick Rendezvous and Pontiac Aztek SUVs are being recalled to repair a faulty ignition relay. Failure could cause intermittent stalling or the inability to start. The campaign affects 38,078 vehicles from the 2004 model year.
Rear seat-belt anchors that failed to meet U.S. and Canadian safety standards led to the recall of 22,115 Saturn L Series Wagons from the 2002 through 2004 model years.
Last year saw 30.6 million vehicles recalled in the United States, a record.
The slew of recalls raises questions about GM's claim that quality is improving. J.D. Power and Associates, which surveys consumers and ranks automakers on initial quality and dependability, said last year that GM manufactured 28 different models that ranked in the top three of their respective segments.
"The average initial quality of new cars and trucks has increased significantly over the past several years," said John Tews, spokesman for J.D. Powerand Associates. "General Motors and the other domestic automakers have shown steady improvement in initial quality over that period."
Cadillac was second among nameplates in initial quality, behind Lexus. Overall, GM customers reported 120 problems per 100 vehicles in the survey; the industry average was 119.
GM's Adler attributed the large number of recalls to greater scrutiny by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, closer monitoring of warranty claims and an active public, which frequently now exchanges information on potential design problems over the Internet.
"I think it's greater vigilance across the board," Adler said.
GM shares fell 2 cents to close at $26.75 in Monday trading.

You can reach Jeff Plungis at (202) 906-8204 or jplungis@ detnews.com.

This should really help their image

Ford recalls police cars, taxis for fire risk
Detroit News, Reuters, AP and Bloomberg News reports
DETROIT - Ford Motor Co. said on Friday it is recalling 155,700 Crown Victoria sedans used as police cars or taxi cabs because of a fire risk. A sound insulator under the dash of the 2003-2005 model year Crown Victorias could slip out of position and overheat, Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley said. "It could overheat and smoke or char the components. There have been very few reports of fire, although we've had one or two," she said. The automaker has had no reports of any accidents or injuries resulting from the problem, she added. The bulk of the vehicles affected by the voluntary recall are in the United States and Canada, she said.
http://www.detnews.com/2005/au...9.htm

Toyota recalling 790,000 trucks
May 18, 2005
BY ALAN OHNSMAN
BLOOMBERG
Toyota Motor Corp., the world's second-largest automaker, in one of its largest safety recalls ever, is recalling 790,000 pickups and SUVs to fix a flawed ball joint that can make the trucks difficult to steer and cause drivers to lose control.
The recall covers 2001 through 2002 model 4Runner SUVs, 2001 through 2004 Tacoma pickups and 2002 through 2004 Tundra pickups and Sequoia SUVs, said Ming-Jou Chen, a spokeswoman for the automaker's Torrance, Calif.-based U.S. sales unit. Toyota filed details of the recall Monday with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The problem involves a defective ball joint that connects to the trucks' front suspension that, with wear, may produce looseness in the joint, making steering difficult, Chen said. Toyota has confirmed the flaw in at least six vehicles and is aware of two "minor" accidents that have resulted, she said. Neither accident involved injuries, Chen said.
The U.S. recall is among the largest ever for the Toyota City, Japan-based automaker, which expanded U.S. sales 14 percent in the first four months of 2005, in part because of a reputation for producing relatively defect-free, durable cars and trucks. Toyota's Chen couldn't confirm whether the recall was the largest ever for the company in the United States.
Owners will be notified of the problem beginning in June. Details of the recall weren't available on NHTSA's Web site.
http://www.freep.com/money/aut...8.htm

Smart Fortwo Called back, MB must be really up the wall by now
The cars from '98 to '00, about 58,000 in germany and a total of 100,000 worldwide.
FRANKFURT, May 27, 2005; Reuters reported that DaimlerChrysler is recalling 58,000 of its Smart ForTwo microcars in Germany built between 1998 and 2000 due to a possible defect on its front axle, the company said on Friday.
A Smart spokesman said cars in other countries could also experience the same problem caused by rusting of supporting joints on the axle, but he could not immediately say how many were affected in total.
"It can involve cars produced between October 1998 and December 2000, and naturally they were also sold in other countries," the Smart spokesman said, adding 202,000 ForTwos made at that time were sold around the world.
The most important markets at the time were Italy, France, Switzerland, Spain, the Benelux countries, Japan and Austria, he said. Customers there would also be notified.
Of the 100,000 cars in Germany on the road, 58 percent were being recalled. The others had already been checked in garages after customers began complaining of the problem, he said.
Smart, a unit of Daimler's Mercedes Car Group, will cost the group up to 1.2 billion euros ($1.51 billion) in restructuring costs in 2005 as the loss-making unit tries to break even in 2007.
Daimler's flagship Mercedes-Benz brand has also struggled with quality problems, prompting the carmaker to recall 1.3 million vehicles earlier this year, the marque's biggest ever.
theautochannel and AMS

I will find the fax and post it, but nonetheless, Subaru is having all dealers test their Tribeca's in stock for faulty motor mounts. Apparently union workers have been torquing the bolts too tight which translates into unusual amounts of cabin vibration and unsteady steering. If enough vehicles are found to be defective, UP coud be forced to buy back all defective Tribeca's (via big lawsuit) because apparently this enough to cause major accidents and Subaru doesn't want to be held liabel.

Honda recalls 1.14 million vehicles
Honda Motor Co. is widening a recall of vehicles in the U.S. and Canada to 1.14 million units, among its largest, covering Accord and Acura cars that have the same transmission fault that triggered a light-truck recall this year.
Japans third-largest automaker is voluntarily recalling 536,950 vehicles, with V-6 engines and 5-speed automatic transmissions, in addition to those already announced in April. The company is also recalling 79,531 units in Japan to fix faulty transmissions and fuel tanks, starting tomorrow.
The inspections and repairs will cost Honda about $63 million, in addition to the $153 million being spent on the light- truck portion of the recall, spokesman Andy Boyd said. In Japan, Honda is spending about $8.5 million on its recall.
Honda was runner-up to Toyota Motor Co.p. in an annual reliability study of three-year-old cars and trucks by J.D. Power & Associates in the U.S. Honda, Toyota and Nissan Motor Co., benefited from consumer perceptions that they build better vehicles to increase their U.S. market share to 24.1 percent last year from 22.2 percent, according to Autodata Corp.
Hondas North American recall includes 2003- and 2004-model Accords, 2000- through early 2004-model Acura TL sedans, and 2001- through 2003-model Acura CLs, Boyd said. In April, the company recalled 600,000 U.S. and Canadian Odyssey minivans, and Pilot and Acura MDX sport-utility vehicles with the same transmission.
Shares of Honda, which ranks fifth in U.S. sales, fell 0.6 percent to 5,260 yen in Tokyo.
Japanese Recall
The Japanese recall covers 68,000 vehicles with gearbox defects, including Odyssey and Lagreat minivans. The Tokyo-based carmaker will also take back 11,531 Inspire sedans with faulty fuel pumps, spokesman Kazuhiro Suda said. There have been no accidents reported in Japan, the company said in a statement.
The problem results from insufficient lubrication of a transmission shaft that can overheat, potentially damaging gear teeth or causing the gears to break, Honda said in a statement.
The U.S. unit of Tokyo-based Honda has had only one reported incident of a transmission failing in the car models recalled and no reported accidents or injuries, Boyd said.
We are acting out of an abundance of caution to ensure that this doesnt become an issue for our customers, Tom Elliot, Hondas U.S. executive vice president, said in a statement. Customers will be notified by letter starting mid-July.
In most cases, the gears will be inspected and the flow of transmission fluid will be modified, Honda said. If damage from insufficient lubrication is found, the transmission will be replaced, the company said. Recall repairs typically are paid for out of reserves set aside for that purpose.
The Accord is Hondas best-selling model, with annual sales in the U.S. and Canada exceeding 400,000.

This defect requires drivers to use more force when braking, increasing the braking distances of the vehicle.
Although a Mitsubishi spokesman noted to Automotive News that the Eclipse still meets federal braking regulations despite this problem, the company is bringing the vehicles back to dealerships to ensure there are no serious problems.
The previous recall, issued on May 24, was due to issues with the vacuum-brake booster. Mitsubishi claims the first recall has nothing in common with the current recall.
This recall covers all 2006 Eclipse models manufactured between March 30 and June 10.
What this means to you: Even though the 2006 Eclipse is a fine-looking vehicle, it seems the quality problems that nearly brought Mitsubishi to its knees have yet to be fully resolved.

GM recalls 804,000 pickups, SUVs
Anti-lock brakes may function improperly. Also, Hyundai recalls Sonatas, Ford recalls Land Rovers
DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. is recalling 804,000 full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles because of potential brake problems, federal safety regulators said Tuesday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said unwanted application of the antilock brake system in some vehicles can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed braking and may result in a crash.
Vehicles affected by the recall include the Chevrolet Avalanche and Silverado pickups and the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs. The GMC Sierra pickup and Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs are also affected. All 804,000 vehicles trucks are from the 1999-2002 model years, NHTSA said.
GM, the world's largest automaker, had more vehicle recalls than any other manufacturer in the United States last year.
Separately, NHTSA said Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. was recalling 36,000 of its Sonata cars from the 2006 model year because their front seat belts may interfere with the manual seat back recliner knob.
The seat belt may cause unexpected release of the front seat back recliner, potentially resulting in an injury to passengers, NHTSA said.
In a more limited safety action, the agency said Ford Motor Co.'s Land Rover unit was recalling 17,263 Land Rover LR3 SUVs to replace potentially defective fuel tanks. The vehicles are from the 2005 model year.
Source: CNN/Reuters

More than 450,000 vehicles in the United States are being recalled by Chrysler, General Motors, Hyundai and Kia for a range of defects, Reuters reported, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Chrysler recall involves some 2005 model year vehicles including the Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum, Dodge Dakota/Mitsubishi Raider pickups and Dodge Durango equipped with some six-cylinder engines and automatic transmissions. NHTSA said the problem in question may cause the vehicles to move while their transmission is in the "Park" position.
General Motors is recalling 123,592 vehicles including the Buick Rainier, Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Yukon, Hummer H2, Isuzu Ascender, Chevrolet Express and Savana vans from the 2006 model year as well as the Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado and GMC Sierra models from the 2005 model year, because of potential power steering problems that could lead to engine fires. NHTSA said the vehicles' power steering hose, under extreme steering maneuvers, may break and leak fluid. This could result in increased braking effort and if the power steering fluid spray were to spray onto hot engine parts, a fire could occur.
Also, Kia is recalling 74,276 Sedona minivans from 2002 to 2004 model years equipped with power seats because a problem with the wiring under the front seats could cause a fire.
Kia's affiliate, Hyundai, is recalling 12,000 Santa Fe SUVs from the 2005 model year because of a problem with the front passenger seat occupant classification system, which may mistakenly identify a child as an adult and result in improper airbag deployment in the event of a crash, NHTSA said.
Source; Cand D

Hybrid technology is bound to have teething problems. The Corolla remains a superior choice to the Prius when you look at driving 100,000 miles without trouble and with low cost.

10-15-2005, 08:24 AM
Prius is a midsize car so you can't compare it to a Corolla. The only fair comparison is a Camry.
GM, Nissan and just about every other car manufacturer up to a few months a go was making the exact same flawed argument. You can't justify the cost of a hybrid system with the money you save on gas. But they missed the whole point while honda and toyota raked in the sales. Nobody buys a new car to save money. The decision to buy a hybrid is just like any other performance feature that people pay extra for. Most consumers don't really need a 300hp V8, 12 inches of ground clearance or 3 rows of seats. But when push comes to shove they are willing to pay extra even if they will never use the full potential of their vehicle. I think now the rest of the industry finally realizes that you can charge a fat premium for hybrids or at least they don't have to discount. But most will be very very late to the game.
Sometimes you really have to wonder why these execs get the big bucks.

If the conditions are the same as those used in Japan, there is a possibility that we may recall all of the 1.05 million cars.
Last month Toyota said it would recall about 1.41 million cars globally, its biggest ever such move, including the Corolla and 15 other models due to trouble with their headlight switching systems.
Toyota declined to comment on cost of the latest recall.
The spokesman said the bolts were not rinsed thoroughly when the vehicles were made between April 1998 and September 2003. In the worst case the bolts may be rusted and broken, disabling the engines.

Ford recalling 3,8 milion trucks!

Ford Motor Co. said replacement parts used in its recall of 3.8 million pickup trucks and SUVs would not be available until February because of production delays.
In September, the automaker recalled 1994-2002 model-year vehicles amid complaints of engine fires linked to the cruise control switch system. The recall, the fifth-largest in U.S. history, covered the F-150 pickup, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Bronco.
Ford's investigation found that brake fluid could leak through the cruise control's deactivation switch into the system's electrical components, potentially causing corrosion. The corrosion could cause a buildup of electrical current which could cause overheating and a fire.
Dealers were told to install a fused wiring harness to act as a circuit breaker. The harness would cut off electrical current to the switch if the current increases.
Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in early September that the replacement parts were expected to be available in mid-October. But Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley said the supplier and the company ran into delays producing the wiring harnesses.
"We're expecting we'll be able to notify customers the first week of February that they'll be able to have the new part put in their vehicles," Kinley said Tuesday.
As an interim step, Kinley said owners could have their speed control system disconnected until the part becomes available.
Source: Detroit Free Press
http://www.freep.com

GM expands recall of SUVs to additional states

General Motors Corp. is expanding a recall of sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks with possible antilock brake corrosion to include another 553,000 vehicles in six states and the District of Columbia.
The recall involves the 1999-2002 model years of the Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL.
GM said in August that it was recalling about 800,000 of the vehicles in 14 northern states, including Michigan. GM spokesman Alan Adler said Friday the recall will be expanded to include Delaware, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
Road grime can wedge its ways into a plastic piece that covers the ABS sensor near the wheel hub, Adler said, resulting in salt corrosion. The corrosion leads to unwanted activation of the antilock brakes at low speeds, requiring a longer stopping distance.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation in late April of more than 1.2 million GM pickups and SUVs in 20 states because of questions over the antilock brakes.
Adler said the company decided to expand the recall based upon incident rates.
According to the most recent data available, there were 228 crashes reported through the end of May, including 10 minor injuries.
GM recalled about 150,000 pickups in eastern Canada in November 2004 from the same model years because of the condition in the antilock brakes.
In afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange, shares of GM were up 18 cents at $18.82.
Source: Detroit Free Press
http://www.freep.com

JAMES
Sunday, January 01, 2006
The Mazda Motor Corp. has issued a recall of its 2003 Mazda Protege because of potentially loose engine parts.
The problem, as indicated in letters mailed recently to Protege owners, is that screws used to mount the intake manifold shutter valve may become loose and fall out.
According to the letter, engine vibration, air pulsation and normal action of the valve may loosen the mounting screws.
If the screws fall out, drivers may hear a rough idling noise, and/or see the malfunction indicator lamp illumination, or the engine may misfire creating additional exhaust emissions, according to the recall notice.
Owners of the 2003 Mazda Protege should contact a Mazda dealer for inspection of the intake manifold shutter valve. If necessary, the company will replace the screws and gaskets with new ones, or replace the entire intake manifold assembly free of charge.
The company estimates repair should take about four hours to complete.
Steven Morin, a service technician for Advance Auto Parts in Elizabeth City, said the recall isn't a cause for panic.
"What happens is the intake, where gas and fuel mix, is loose, and it causes a small gap," explained Morin. He encouraged owners of the 2003 Mazda Protege to schedule appointments with a Mazda dealer as soon as possible.
"I wouldn't wait too long to have it checked out. It could potentially damage the engine, but that would take a long time," he said.
To locate a Mazda dealer, go to the manufacturer's Web site at http://www.MazdaUSA.com, or call the customer assistance center at 800-222-5500, option 4.

General Motors probably used low-medium alloyed steels which oxidates faster than other materials under air & moisture (& they probably used the same resources on some other years), hence corrosion, wouldnt be surprised. It makes little sense to me using cables for supporting tailgate loads unless its heavy and/or has a backup..most people are oblivious to the fact that no matter how sturdy a tailgate is, theres still a weight limit to it, & companies are equally oblivious to the fact that buyers think this. It doesnt pay to skimp on the small things..

However, unlike with standard lead-acid batteries, the electrolyte used in the Prius's nickel metal hydride battery pack is alkaline and therefore less corrosive.
Toyota isn't classifying the work as a recall, but instead a 'customer satisfaction campaign'. That means the company have judged the problem isn't serious enough to be logged as a 'safety campaign' with the government's vehicle safety agency, VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), but it also means Toyota isn't allowed access to DVLA records to track down owners.
The campaign comes on the heels of a global recall last year of the current Prius to cure a stalling problem identified by US owners. Some drivers had been left stranded after the computer shut down the petrol engine without warning and cut the power available from the electric motor. That affected 160,000 cars made between 2003 and 2004 and was fixed with a software patch.
Toyota has instructed dealers to give affected Prius Mk1 owners a bottle of champagne, and to return their car valeted and with a tank of fuel.
Toyota will recall 418,600 cars

Quote »

Toyota will recall 418,600 cars
Bloomberg News
Published July 18, 2006, 9:09 AM CDT

Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's biggest automaker, said it will recall about 418,600 vehicles globally to fix faulty engine sensors.
The recall, which starts tomorrow, affects 268,570 cars in Japan, which were built between January 2001 and November 2001, Toyota said in a filing to the country's transport ministry today. The vehicles are spread over 12 models including the Vitz, bB and Corolla compact cars. The company also plans to recall about 150,000 vehicles exported to North America, Europe and other overseas markets.
Toyota recalled over 2 million vehicles last year and in May recalled nearly 1 million vehicles to fix defective steering shafts. The Toyota City, Japan-based company has been using the same parts in different models to cut costs. The strategy is leading to a greater number of affected vehicles when the company uses faulty parts.
Recall repairs are done at no charge to consumers, and typically are paid for by automakers from reserves set aside for that purpose.
Improperly shaped plastic parts may leak oil to sensors and stall engines, Toyota said. No accidents were linked to the defect, the company said.
Toyota in October 2005 filed Japan's biggest one-time recall to fix headlights and brakes. It took back 1.27 million vehicles affecting 16 models such as Corollas and RAV4 sport- utility vehicles.
Separately, Hino Motors Ltd., 50 percent owned by Toyota, said it will recall 1,913 vehicles in Japan to fix defects. The recall affects the five models including Dutro trucks and Toyota Toyoace trucks, Hino said.
Copyright 2006, Chicago Tribune

http://www.chicagotribune.com/...s-hed

Toyota recall:
Tokyo (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it was recalling 418,570 vehicles globally, including some Echo and Prius models sold in the U.S., over a faulty engine part.
The faulty part is the latest in a string of problems requiring recalls by Toyota, raising doubts over whether the automaker can maintain quality standards amid booming sales.
The recall affects 268,570 vehicles sold in Japan across 12 models manufactured in 2001, including Corollas, the compact cars Vitz and Platz and the hybrid Prius, the company said in a statement submitted to Japan's Transport Ministry.
The recall also affects about 150,000 cars sold overseas, mainly in the United States and Canada, Toyota spokeswoman Shiori Hashimoto said. These autos were also manufactured in 2001.
In the United States, 24,490 cars sold under the name Echo and Yaris, as well as 8,476 Prius vehicles are affected by the recall, she said.
The faulty part could lead to an oil leak within the engine and cause it to stop completely, the statement said. There have been no accidents due to the fault, according to Toyota.
The company will fix an additional 3,232 Toyota and Hino vans manufactured in 2004-2005 whose engines may have a faulty turbine blade, though the fault isn't serious enough to meet Japan's recall standards, the company said.
The recall comes after police investigated three Toyota officials on suspicion of professional negligence in allegedly shirking recalls for eight years and not fixing a defect that may have caused an accident.
Five people were injured in a crash in 2004 in southern Japan when steering failed in a 1993 Toyota Hilux Surf sport utility vehicle, causing it to swing out of control. Toyota had received five reports of problems with the steering by 1996, but no recall was made until 2004, the company said.
The investigation was another embarrassment for Toyota, whose once impeccable image has been tarnished by a number of recalls.
Earlier this month, the company recalled 367,500 Toyota and Lexus sport utility vehicles in the U.S. because a piece in the front console area could come loose and interfere with the gas pedal.
Toyota has been reporting booming sales in recent years and is growing so rapidly some analysts expect it to overtake struggling General Motors Corp. of the U.S. as the world's biggest automaker in coming years.

Source: <A HREF="http://www.wwj.com/pages/57950.php?" Ford recall:
WASHINGTON (AP) - Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday that it was recalling nearly 20,000 Mustang Cobra sports cars after receiving complaints that the back of the accelerator pedal could become caught in the floor carpeting and lead to a crash.
Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in late January that it had received about 100 complaints and allegations of two crashes and one injury. The recall affects 19,140 Mustang Cobras from the 2003 and 2004 model years.
Ford said in a letter to NHTSA that the rear surface of the pedal could interfere with the carpeting during heavy throttling and make it difficult for the pedal to return to an idle position. The problem could be found in vehicles where the floor carpeting does not fit flush with the sheet metal. Dealers are expected to install a bracket over the cutout in the carpet behind the pedal. Owners are expected to be notified of the recall in late April and will not be charged for the repair.
Last July, NHTSA opened an investigation into accelerator pedal interference in the 2003 and 2004 Mustang, and the 2003 model year of the Mustang convertible and Mustang GT. Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley said the automaker's investigation only found the issue in the Cobras because the high-performance model has a different pedal configuration than the other Mustang versions.
<A HREF="http://www.wwj.com/pages/24064.php?" Recalls are good things because the manufacatures fixes their mistakes for free. Can you remember when Alfa Romeo had last recall? Or, why VW didn't recall TDI engines to fix airflow meter, or window mounts?
Why didn't they have recalls, now I have to spend $400 for the Airflow meter and $300 for the window mounts.
Another thing too, instead of selling just those small plastic parts that hold the window, they sell the complete system, to make more money.

12-16-2006, 05:25 AM
But isn't Toyota well known for having the least mistakes as possible? Toyota lately has been on a roll in recalls. No company nor consumers favour recalls.

The automaker has received reports of 11 accidents and six injuries connected to the recall, said Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong.
The automaker said there was a possibility of excessive wear to a front suspension lower ball joint that could make it difficult to steer the vehicle and stay in the center of the lane. Drivers may also notice more noise coming from the front suspension, Kwong said.
Toyota recalled about 775,000 pickups and SUVs in May 2005 one of its largest recalls ever because of similar problems with the front suspension. The recall included 2002-2004 model years of the Tundra and Sequoia.
Kwong said the company received additional complaints involving newer models of the Tundra and Sequoia, prompting them to issue the recall.
Toyota, which is challenging General Motors Corp. to become the world's largest automaker, has aggressively touted its redesigned Tundra pickup as a strong competitor in the lucrative truck segment dominated by GM and Ford Motor Co.
The first Tundras built at Toyota's San Antonio plant are expected in showrooms next month. The automaker recently unveiled its Tundra CrewMax full-size pickup truck at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The large pickup will arrive in showrooms in March.
With its expansion, the automaker has struggled with some quality issues. Toyota had 2.2 million vehicle recalls in 2005, but showed improvements last year when its recalls fell to 766,000 vehicles. Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe has repeatedly vowed to enhance quality controls.
Owners will be notified in mid-February of the Sequoia and Tundra recall and dealers will replace the left and right front suspension lower ball joint at no charge to the vehicle's owners. Mazdas biggest domestic recall: 280.000+ Demios & Verisas affected

Quote »

Mazda Motor Corp. said Thursday it is recalling more than 280,000 cars in Japan due to defects, the automaker's biggest vehicle recall on record in Japan.
Mazda will recall 287,987 Demio and Verisa compact models, produced between June 2002 and July 2006. The defects affect the clutch systems and coil springs in suspensions, Mazda spokeswoman Aya Takahashi said.
No injuries or damage have been reported, she said.
The automaker will make the repairs for free, but did not provide the cost of the latest recalls.
Some 25,559 Demios -- known as the Mazda2 overseas -- were also exported during that period, she said. These cars are not part of the domestic recall, and Mazda will handle the defects of exported models in line with local regulations, Takahashi said.
Of those exported, some 20,850 were shipped to Australia, 1,166 vehicles to New Zealand, 1,147 to Singapore and 262 units to Hong Kong.
It is Mazda's largest recall in Japan since the Hiroshima-based automaker began taking recall data in 1994, she said. The company's previous record recall was for 162,405 vehicles in March 2004.
One of the problems is related to the coil springs, whose coating can be removed easily because of the inappropriate installation of the parts, Takahashi said. The coil may rust and may break eventually in the worst case.
The other problem is that the material to cap the hydraulic oil used in the clutch system could leak, causing the clutch to not work appropriately.
Recalls have been increasing recently among Japanese automakers. German automaker BMW is recalling 29,250 vehicles -- including X5 sports activity vehicles, 5 Series sedans and 6 Series sedans -- because of a static electricity problem that can cause the V-8 engine to stall in certain conditions.
The recall, announced Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affects 5 Series and 6 Series sedans assembled in 2006 and 2007, as well as X5s built in 2007 at the BMW Manufacturing Co. plant near Greer.
All X5s are assembled in the South Carolina plant, with about 60 percent of the production exported.
Vehicles with a V-8 engine could experience problems with stalling in conditions of below-freezing temperatures with low humidity. The NHTSA said that electrostatic discharge could occur at pipes that deliver fuel to the engine's injectors. If this were to occur, the engine electronic control unit could be affected, causing the engine to stall.
The agency said that if the engine stalls, the driver could not maintain vehicle speed or accelerate and the power steering could fail, all increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall is expected to begin this month. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.
Dealers will attach two ground cables in the engine compartment, free of charge
This issue has happened previously, IIRC:
Nissan recalling 650,000 Altimas and Sentras

Quote »

Nissan has issued a recall for over 650,000 MY 2002 and 2005-06 Altimas and Sentras sold with the company's 2.5L four-cylinder engine, which may suddenly stop running. Automotive News reports that the problem lies with the crankshaft position sensor, which can overheat and stop sending signals to the car's computer brain. If the signal break is too quick for the ECU to diagnose the problem, it stops the engine, which obviously could be extremely inconvenient depending on what the driver's doing at the time. All it takes to fix the problem, however, is for Nissan dealers to reprogram the ECU, which they'll do free of charge, of course. Porsche recalls 128 of its 911 GT3 sports cars

Reuters Tuesday December 4 2007

FRANKFURT, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Porsche is recalling 128 of its 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS sports cars to repair switches that control traction and adjust suspensions, the company said on Tuesday.

It said the problem could lead to the two functions' failure, although it was unaware of any cases in which this had happened.
The recall covers models made between Sept. 28 and Nov. 9 of this year, it said in a statement.

The GT3 sells for around 112,500 euros ($165,900) including tax in Germany, while the RS version costs around 135,000 euros. (Reporting by Michael Shields; Editing by David Cowell)[/quote]

Chrysler: 575,417 2001-2002MY Dodge Dakota, Durango, and Ram van models; 2002MY Ram pickup trucks

DETROIT (Reuters) - Chrysler LLC said on Friday it would recall 575,417 vehicles as long-term wear on the gear shift assembly could cause them to shift out of park without the key in the ignition.

The recall involves 2001 to 2002 model-year Dodge Dakota pickup trucks, Durango sports utility vehicles and Ram van models and 2002 model-year Ram pickup trucks.

"In a limited number of cases, long-term wear on the shift assembly can erode the height of the shift blocker, creating the potential that the vehicle could shift out of park without the key in the ignition," Chrysler said in a statement

The company said nine incidents involving injuries have been identified in connection with this issue but no fatalities have been reported.

Owners will be notified, beginning in January, according to the company.

GM announces recall

General Motors Corp. said Friday it was recalling about 313,000 passenger cars and crossover vehicles to fix a fluid leak that could lead to the driver losing control of the vehicle.

The recall involves 275,936 vehicles in the United States, including the 2005-2007 Cadillac CTS and STS sedans, 2005-2007 Cadillac SRX crossovers, and 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and the 2007 Saturn Sky convertibles. About 38,000 additional vehicles are under recall in Mexico, Canada, the Middle East and Asia, GM said.

GM said the seal on the rear axle pinion, which provides power to the wheels, does not meet all specifications and could leak fluid. GM spokeswoman Carolyn Markey said the leak could lead to the drivewheel jamming up and locking while the vehicle is being driven, possibly causing the driver to lose control.

There has been one crash reported in which the rear wheels locked because of the leak and hit another car. In a separate incident, a driver reported an injury after moving around in the car as the vehicle lost control.

Markey said there have been "a higher than normal" number of warranty claims because of the problem.

The recall is expected to begin in February 2008 and dealers will replace the pinion seal free of charge. Owners may contact Cadillac at (800) 982-2339, Pontiac at (800) 620-7668 and Saturn at (800) 972-8876.

Massive Volkswagen Passat recall in NA

Volkswagen (http://www.leftlanenews.com/volkswagen.htm) has announced the recall of every gasoline-powered Passat sold in the U.S. from 1999 to 2005 — some 410,000 vehicles. Moreover, the recall isn't just for one issue. Some Passats recalled to VW dealerships will have three potential defects checked.

For Volkswagen Passats equipped with an automatic transmission, dealers will inspect the car's firewall. VW said that there is the possibility that some cars' firewalls could be damaged near the catalytic converter, in which case the dealer would add more shielding.
Passats equipped with VW's 1.8L turbo-four will be checked for a faulty fuel line.
Lastly, VW dealers will also be checking all-wheel drive Passats damaged fuel tank ventilation valves.
Despite the plethora of potential defects, no injuries or accidents have been linked to the recall issues.

Funny this was posted. My friend is a mechanic and has been fixing the window issues found on Toyota's. He has fixed a lot of Corolla's. The issue seems to be different then what's mentioned here. He sees that the bolt that holds the regulator strips off the sheet metal of the door. There simply isn't enough surface area for the bolt to hold on to thus the sheet metal rips apart from the bolt then the bolt becomes loose. He's been fixing it by replacing the bolt and adding a large washer in between so the the bolt has a better hold onto the door metal. The door metal is paper thin.

Toyota is recalling around 90,000 Highlander Sport Utility Vehicles because of defective safety belts that can interfere with the proper operation of rear facing child safety seats. This is the latest quality issue to beset Toyota, which faces at least one lawsuit involving another type of seatbelt, as well as a whistleblower lawsuit charging the company covered up safety issues.

According the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this latest recall involves 90,000 model year 2008 Highlander and Highlander hybrid sport utility vehicles. The NHTSA discovered during compliance testing that the locking mechanism on the Highlander seat belts cannot secure properly when certain rear-facing child safety seats are used, which could cause the child seats to move. However, the NHTSA said the belt would still lock securely during an accident.

Toyota said it will notify owners of the vehicles by letter of the recall in early June, he said. The component will be replaced without charge.

This is not the first time a Toyota vehicle has been cited for a defective seatbelt. Last November, a civil trial opened in California in the case of a man who was killed when the seatbelt of his 2002 Toyota Corolla jammed, leaving him trapped in a burning car. Raminder Singh, a 60-year-old security guard, and his 19-year-old son were driving to a shoe shop when their Toyota Corolla was struck by another vehicle and veered off the road and smashed into a tree. The son was able to free himself from his seatbelt, but the elder Singhs seatbelt jammed. By the time the son crawled out of the car to seek help, the cars engine had caught fire, and he could do nothing but watch as his father burned to death inside the wreckage.

The Toyota Corolla involved in Singhs death was manufactured at the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) facility in California. Toyota and General Motors embarked on the NUMMI joint venture in 1984, and the California plant produces the Corolla subcompact, Tacoma pickup truck and the Pontiac vibe wagon.

The NUMMI plant is at the center of a second California lawsuit, in which a certified auditor at the plant accuses her superiors of deleting or downgrading defect reports from her vehicle reports. Those problems included defective parts like broken seat belts and bad headlights, as well as poor braking systems and steering wheel alignment problems. The Toyota and General Motors whistleblower lawsuit also claims that managers retaliated against the employee when she objected. According to the complaint against General Motors and Toyota, the plaintiff has been receiving medical treatment for stress, depression, fatigue, insomnia and panic attacks as a result of the poor treatment she was subjected to at NUMMI.

Ford Recall:

Ford announced Thursday a recall for 2008 F-Series trucks because the front driver's seat does not conform with federal standards.

Ford says the weld connecting a bracket and the driver's front seat back could crack on a small number of vehicles. As a result, the vehicles do not comply with federal rules for seat back strength.

The recall covers about 100,000 F-250 through F-550 Super Duty trucks. More than 87,000 of the trucks are in the United States and 14,000 are in Canada.

Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said Thursday that no injuries have been reported. Ford discovered the issue after receiving reports of the weld cracking.

Owners will be notified of the recall later in March. For more information, owners can call Ford at (800) 392-3673.

VW Recall:

Volkswagen is recalling over 400,000 cars because of potential problems with the underbody heat shield. The recall is for the Passat models from 1999 through 2005.

Owners will be notified beginning May 30. But ,if there's a fuel smell, owners are encouraged take the vehicle to the dealership immediately.

Some Passat vehicles with an automatic transmission may have an underbody heat shield that could be subject to damage. A damaged heat shield, in contact with the vehicle exhaust system, could create risk. These heat shields will be inspected, and an additional heat shield will be installed.

Additionally, some vehicles equipped with 1.8T engines have a fuel line that requires inspection and potential replacement. A small number of vehicles equipped with 4Motion all-wheel-drive will be inspected for potential damage to a fuel tank ventilation valve.

No accidents or injuries have been recorded.
