An unamed investor has commissoned a new DeLorean Sports Car. The car, to be built in Northen Ireland, must capture the soul and feeling of the last car, while still being a competitive and modern auto.

Contest will close on the 10th of September.

Hmmmm...to me this looks like a Nightrider contest....jk.
Should be fun, maybe some retro styling.

Hopefully this will inspire people to produce very radically styled designs. Im in.
But when you say, the soul and feel of the last car, does this mean that the new version has to be slow and terrible to drive but also a complete flop in terms of sales?

I'm in! It'll be interesting to fuse modern design with styling cues from the original. My design philosophy will be: completely modern, but unmistakably DeLorean. Let's see what other people will come up with!
EDIT: again, i'm having extraordinary trouble with my initial drawings. I think my design might be more futuristic than modern. good thing!! =)

I'll give it a shot. Inspite of deLoren critics, he gave us the Pontiac GTO and the Ford Mustang (Lee Iacoca helped). It definitely has to have a better engine and windows that can roll down. I might keep the gull-wing doors.

Well, I had some spare time today, so I'm in. I'm leaving in a sec but I will have my design up late tonight.
Peugeot_206: Nice design, i like how you incorporated several elements from the original DMC-12, and how you decided to show two roof options. However, I feel the translation was quite literal, and it doesn't seem to be quite as "modern" as it could (granted, I sort of feel the same way about my own design). Moreover, it doesn't have quite the swept-back sports car look that the original car had. All in all a nice effort, though, and you were brave to be the first designer to post!

I'm experiencing the same problem. For some reason my design also doesn't look modern! I think the 70's-80's vision of a sleek car makes it look old. Is it the hatchback design? Something's wrong...

Well, I gave it my best shot; below is my interpretation of a new Delorean which retains the space-age soul of the original DMC-12 as interpreted through a distinctly 21st Century aesthetic.
I'll be frank: I didn't feel there was much to work with, in the Delorean. I mean it's essentially a two-box with gullwing doors; nothing too distinctive. Thus, I incorporated as much as I could--the rear engine covered with slats, grid-pattern tail lamps, long hood proportions, gullwing doors--but most of all I tried to bring the concept of the car into current times. I know it's not colored, but it would naturally maintain the all-metal look; in my opinion a polished aluminum in lieu of the brushed steel, which would give it the brilliance of the Shelby GR1 concept.
Anyway, enjoy!

Would love to see a front view of this car, Domino. The problem I had with this car is that it's just so BORING. Like you said, just two boxes and gullwing doors. I do like how you've translated spaceage backthen design to spaceage right now design, but I would like to see how you managed turning the resolutely rectangular front end into something more interesting :P (btw nice interior, but not sure about the ergonomics of that high-mount handbrake located so close to the driver)

Mil

Yeah, me too. I'd love to see a front angle, i'd like to see how it works. Nice interior. Is there an influence of the Mustang at the rear? Anyway, well drawn. Hopefully you can give us a front view some time soon.
Argh, my sketches are coming out too curvy...and ive been trying different varriations for about 5 hours.!
Looks like ill be finished by tommorow.

i agree. every 3 minute sketch I came up with resembled the car less and less because every single one looks dated. After looking at some other cars from the 80's the DeLorean just looks like your average 80's car. Check out the front, the body profile, the taillight design. They are all commonplace in the 80's. In effect, attempts at reusing some of those design cues will produce a car that looks dated.
My car hasn't been finished yet because mine also looks dated. I hope that sacrificing resemblance for modern looks won't be too bad. EErrrrmmmmmmm

Thanks for the comments, guys. I do have a couple possible front views; obviously that was the hardest part because (as knihc pointed out) there was nothing there to begin with. If I have time I'll refine one of them and post it, if that's allowed.
mr. burns, your entry is well-drawn and, again, is a very direct reinterpretation of the original Delorean... in that respect you nailed it. Yet while obviously that makes the car easily recognizable, it does so without bringing it sufficiently up to the present/future. But it appears that's been everyone's problem. Anyway, very nice car.

I have a design! after hours of playing around, I have a design that may not exactly resemble the original, but uses design cues (such as the non matching bumpers, the dual front lamps, the black front intake, the continuous line from front to back and the black colouring at the bottom of the car! I'll be posting my finished entry (hopefully in colour) in this post!! =) By the way, the design is refreshingly modern. I may be making some last minute modifications to the front end before posting! I'm so excited!

Mil, you have until the coming sunday. I need it as well. I have about 3 hours of free time per day before I have to get ready for work. i've got a design but i want to produce a final copy! hopefully in colour but I'm beginning to doubt that.
EDIT: In actual fact, i came up with a rear view rather quickly, so here's my plan, since I'm so excited, yet have no time for the drawing. I confess that i've spent at least half an hour to a couple hours everyday since the contest was announced trying to come up with a design. After taking a shower, I've decided on the taillamp designs, details and colours as well as the colour of the reflectors.
Spoiler: in case anybody is interested, my car maintains the triple toned colour scheme of the original DMC-12. The front lip will be of slightly different colour than the rest of the car. The taillight and heat vents at the rear are also lined with a slightly different colour as the body. The underside of the car is black. I've also dumped the slits for the rear window, replacing them with a barely visible intake on the roof, and larger engine vents at the rear of the car. The roof scoop should allow air to enter the engine bay at the rear such that hot air coming from the engine is blown through the vents at the back. I also hope to show the gullwing doors open as well, but that means i have to design an interior. that reminds me. I also have to come up with rims! aiya. I hope i didn't ruin any surprises, but then if anybody wanted to wait, then they would have skipped this whole paragraph when it said spoiler =P. so excited!! SOO EXCITED! ...back to work...

4 - DoMiNo: smooth, simple, got lots of DeLorean in it, sleek and beautiful. too bad there isn't a front view.
3 - Innotech: I love its stance and the rear, but looks too much like a lambo.
2 - PlumCrazy: excellent quality as always, but not your best work.
1 - knihc2008: i think this had the most potential, but sadly it's just a bunch of sketches and it doesn't resemble a DeLorean as much as the others.
EDIT: Actually, I'd like to add an honourable mention as well, to Swardus. Nice colouring, perspective, and i adore the retroness. krap why didn't i vote for this one ><. i'll owe u one next time

I realize this contest left us in a bit of a rut; this wasn't exactly the most exciting design and it was therefore kind of hard to draw from and modernize. However, I think everyone did a very good job.
3 - knihc2008 - simply the most modern, sporty, and cutting-edge of the designs, even in its unfinished form.
3 - yourlilbro - low-slung, with a mean face and some interesting details.
2 - chinesedesigner - rear is great, and the rear quarter window and A-pillar treatments are very unique. And it still looks like a Delorean.
2 - PlumCrazy - Another gorgeous sketch, if not your most inspired design. The car is undeniably 90s, but still sleek and simple... and a vast improvement over the old car.

3 - Domino. I love the integration of modern shapes with the DeLorean greenhouse and rear. A nice front view woulda gotten you a 4 :)
3 - PlumCrazy. A thoroughly 90's design, but it still looks good. Reminds of a Lotus Espirit.
2 - ChineseDesigner. Love the front grille work. Lots of interesting shapes and ideas that don't really stick together very well as a whole car.
2 - Innotech. Another thoroughly 90's design, very very interesting. Not necessarily pretty, but very purposeful.

'grats, PlumCrazy
It's completely your call, obviously, but I'm not a huge fan of the new XJ contest for two reasons. First, there's SOOO much speculation about new Jaguars right now--chops/impressions, etc.--that it's hard to think outside what I've seen. Aside from that, the XJ has a bit of a design "legacy" and in that regard precludes a whole lot of experimentation. I suppose that's part of the challenge, but I dunno. Second, how about something a little broader, so that we're not so restricted? We just finished a contest for a car where there was very little stylistic leeway, I just want a contest where every entry doesn't turn out completely the same, which was in ways unfortunately the case with this contest. Maybe not something brand-specific.
Just my 2 cents.

Nurburgring
09-19-2006, 03:59 PM
Agreed. I miss the days when the topic was create your own interpretation of a crossover or a spotr van. Recreating an old car means everyone has to follow the same design patterns in order to capture the car's heritage.

PlumCrazy

Okay, so people will be hindered and dragged down by the past if we try and do a Jag XJ, well what about this then....design an entry-level Land Rover 2-door to get a broader base of people to buy into the marque.
