View Full Version : Hydrogen Vehicle Design Contest

12-21-2005, 10:12 AM
With the huge increase in fuel and oil prices, hydrogen car's are the way forward. A new car show has been organised in Houston, Texas for a display of all Hydrogen powered cars. Your task is to design one of these cars.
Objective:Design a car around a hydrogen "skateboard" chassis, for any brand or a made-up one or no brand in particular.Try to add style to a layout that is basically completely different from most other cars on the market today.
Contest will close on Monday the 2nd of January.
Good Luck.

Guys you dont know how much I miss these contests :(

Hello Guys,
this is my contest entry: the Alfa Romeo Visione Astuta (Vision "Sly")

It's a 4-door sportscar with hidden door handles like on the Alfa 156 (on this one they are hidden even more, maybe I will post a sketch later). The engine is in the chassis, the front is "luggage room" with a spare wheel. So it's a real family car! The car is made of painted glass, only the roof is transparent. The engine can move so that you always have 50 per cent of weight on the front axle, 50 per cent on the rear axle, even if you have much more in the front of the car. The car isn't designed to look as futuristic as possible! The front is very long and the rear short, like a sportscar has to be!
Hope you like it. Please comment.

Modified by car-fan at 4:12 AM 12/24/2005

carfan, it's a really nice looking car, but it looks like a normal, front-engined car. doesnt' look like it makes any particular use of the skateboard chassis at all..

12-23-2005, 01:52 PM
OK, I updated my post, I hope it's good enough.

i guess i should have explained it better...a "skateboard" chassis is one where the engine is located inside the chassis itself, as opposed to in the front of the car on top of the chassis like in conventional gas-powered cars. here's an example:

it's a small picture but you get the idea...no bulky space in front for the engine, kind of like a minivan but to the extreme...
i'm planning to do a montgomery hydrogen car by the time the detroit auto show opens (or actually earlier, before the end of this contest), so that's probably what i'm going to be entering in this contest...

From the entries,I don't think everyone understands this topic. The idea is to look beyond the current form and utilize the freedom created by a "skateboard" chasis.
SV a postof a see through GM Hy-wire would be of much help.

12-23-2005, 11:40 PM
This is what I knew would happen...

here's the best picture i could find of the chassis, i couldn't find cutaways of the car itself...basically, draw a four-wheeled vehicle, you don't need an engine in front or in the middle or in the back; just draw it as if there is no engine at all, because the engine is in the chassis. however, maybe we should start over with a new topic, i didn't have much time to think this over and i didn't realize how much trouble it would cause...

12-24-2005, 11:05 AM
no, please keep it. Im almost done with mine and it is in the correct fashion

the goal is to style a new hydrogen car from scratch, not to modify an existing car...
i should have my design up soon, i've done the front end and i know what i'm going to do for the rear end and the interior

01-01-2006, 05:12 PM
i've got a design planned too. it'll be a totally different interpetation of the chassis, i promise you.

01-01-2006, 05:31 PM
Extension? Eh?? Anyone??

01-01-2006, 06:13 PM
i do believe it's already extended to the 6th.

01-01-2006, 06:55 PM
oh good, i'll have more time to finish. i still need to do the rear end, and i'm gonna start now...since i've made the windows really tinted i might save an interior drawing for later to save time...usually i only do a front view for contests, but the reason i'm going all the way and doing 3/4 front, 3/4 rear and an interior is because this will be an official montgomery concept, which i've been meaning to do for a long time. at any rate, i'll at least enter the front view if i can't get the other views finished, but i'm definitely doing a rear and interior view within the next week, even if i can't ever it in the contest.

MAZDA TO PRODUCE HYDROGEN SUPERCAR?
LOS ANGELES, CA -- As automakers shift their resources to developing alternative fuel technologies, hydrogen has emerged as the leading contender to succeed petroleum as the propellant for a new generation of automobiles. The practical and environmental advantages of a hydrogen powertrain are obvious, but what's less clear are the implications of hydrogen for enthusiast drivers.
Mazda, known the world over for its countless sports car innovations, seeks to address this concern with its new MPH Concept, a true hydrogen-powered super sports car which--according to inside sources--is a go for production. A limited production run would make the MPH (Mazda Performance Hydrogen) the first hydrogen sports car available for general consumption. And with a top speed of over 200mph, it will be the fastest hydrogen fuel cell car ever created.
Based on a "skateboard" chassis, which sits beneath the body of the car, the MPH enjoys unparalleled flexibility of space, an incredibly low center of gravity, and perfect 50-50 weight distribution, advantages which aid in the car's precise handling. Within the self-contained skateboard chassis are two hydrogen fuel cells mounted vertically to the right of the pilot. A prominent air scoop situated next to the cockpit's glass canopy provides cooling to the car's unique powertrain systems.
The design of the MPH, while extreme, isn't radical. "It may be unique, but it's still a car," says one Mazda designer, "We wanted to preserve a more traditional design identity, emphasizing the fuel cell power while retaining a sporty look that consumers can relate to." Where the MPH clearly differs from normal sports cars, however, is in its layout: a single pilot sits on the car's left side, while to his right are placed the fuel cells. Fore and aft compartments contain ample storage space (more than typically expected in a high-performance car) and house a variety of supplemental systems.
The car's carbon fiber body is extremely lightweight, and clearly displays Mazda's corporate identity. Strongly accentuated fender arches recall the RX-8 and MX-5 roadster, while the pentagonal "active cooling" grille (which adjusts airflow to cool powertrain components and brakes as needed) is unmistakably Mazda. Designers note that the MPH's overall shape and low, hunkered-down stance are inspired by the company's Le Mans-winning 787B. Two large wing mirrors provide excellent visibility from the fighter plane-inspired all-glass canopy. This design, combined with a low hood and rear deck (made possible by the absence of a conventional motor) contribute to superior aerodynamics.
The most astounding aspect of the MPH concept? Mazda will build it. "What you see here is 100% production ready," mentions one enthusiastic engineer, "if consumer reaction is strong enough, there will no doubt be a limited production run." This includes the multi-lens adaptive xenon lighting, futuristic digital cockpit, sequential transmission, and massive 3-piece magnesium "sunburst" wheels. In keeping with the company's "Zoom-Zoom" mantra, the MPH (the moniker will likely be dropped for production in favor of "MazdaspeedH") will set the bar in terms of performance and handling, while introducing innovations that will change the industry. Prices and full specifications have not yet been finalized; production to begin summer 2007.

Umm Aidan, is it okay if I could enter in another one because I didnt know these type of cars weren't supposed to look like normal cars. I thought it was just to draw a concept that is powered by hydrogen. Pleez Aidan.

Oooh, SV, nice work.
The overall design is very attractive, it's got a Seat Altea look to it, or something... very organic lines and I like the character line coming down off of the rear. I'm just not a fan of the front; I like how you worked in the Montgomery grille (is it glass? very cool), but the pill-shaped foglamp/indicator/intake (?) insets make what could have been a beautifully simple design way too busy.
Very nice car, and obviously a wise application of a space-saving powertrain.

01-06-2006, 01:55 AM
SV!!! that looks amazing. i love the details. and the advancement of your montgomery design language! awesome.
anyway, here is mine.
The SpeedCell Concept is One of a Kind: JC breaks new ground with the quick, fuel-cell powered SpeedCell.
Alternative fuels can be practical, thrifty, and environmentally friendly, but for some reason, an alternative fuel will never be taken seriously until it is shown that it can be done quickly. Speed is the soul of JC, so it is only natural that our first foray into the alternative fuel territory is the quickest fuel-cell vehicle concieved to date. The SpeedCell concept is all about speed and superior handling, it's superior traits revolving around the very environmentally friendly skateboard chassis it rides on.
The skateboard chassis provides the SpeedCell a seamless, effortless thrust of power, and not much is needed either; the SpeedCell is extremely lightweight, due to its unique architecture. More so, the skateboard chassis provides for a perfectly balanced drivetrain, the only concentrated weight mass being the driver, who, being placed slightly aft of center, creates a 48/52 front/rear distribution, in fact an ideal weight balance for such a sporting car.
There is more than just weight that makes the SpeedCell an ideal model for making a fuel-cell vehicle quick. Due to the flat nature of the drivetrain, the upper body is a pure exercise in aerodynamics. The low front end is unburdened with an engine or transmission of any sort, just horizontally placed suspension and cabin cooling ducts. The extremely low stance not only allows the SpeedCell to slice through the air in a record-shattering drag coefficiency, but also places the center of gravity for the vehicle below the very ground it stands upon, making for blazing handling trails.
Over all this technical advancement is a sexy, curving and agressive body that harks back to Corvette racers of yore, in a daring and dramatic new way. The curves are extremely emphsized, the wheel fenders dramatically large, anchored in the center by a low middle section which showcases not only the dramatic use of the skateboard chassis but also makes the car appear incredibly hunkered down and set on its four wheels. This car is, by any view, impressive and revolutionary, just like the drivetrain it sits on, yet purposeful and fast, like the supercar it actually is.
If alternative fuels will never be taken seriously until they are shown they can be done quick and sexy, the SpeedCell is a resounding helper to the cause. It shows that skateboard chassis are not only perfect for practical purposes, but also are ideal in so many ways to make a car simply go faster.

p.s. this design has been in my sketchbook since, according to the date i scribbled next to it, september 25th, 2004! it's undergone some detail changes since but it is by and large pretty exact. enjoy!
