I would say a "keep it real" car<br>For all of you there is a concept of the car of tomorrow, is it a sportscar?, a minivan?, a minicar?, a sedan?, a crossover?, a SUV?, whatever.<br>I say everyone picks hes own car having in mind a realistic car of the future.

How about *Designing a car for any developing country*. I am not impressed with the alsoran designs italian styling studios are giving chinese cars. <p>It would force the designer to do some research and expand creativity. Renault tried with the Dacia Logan, but function triumphed form, so it would provide a chalenge.

A commuter car (one of those funny looking mini cars for 2 people built for the city, kinda like a smart but sometimes even smaller).<p>Also "a car inspired in a _____" - always interesting. can be inspired on a speedboat, on a shoe, on a pen, on a printer, on a bycicle, on whatever really.

personally i think itd be pretty cool, if like someone drew just say a green house or a headlight, or tail light or soemthing and people had to work with that, essentially there is no rules, theres a predrawn pic for a head , taillight, greenhosue, W/E and basically that has to be incorporated into your own personal design, past that its up to each person, i dont know if that will cause a bit to much of like hecticness (i know its not a word, but i cnat think of an appropriate filler there), but i think itd be pretty cool to see how people can make one design element and make it into what they feel works with it<br>does this make sense? i feel like i cant really get it into typing

domino i had a contest idea a while back ago that involved designing the interior of your bentley/breitling vehicle, since we haven't had an interior competition yet and frankly i think the interior of both a bentley and a breitling car would be pretty amazing to design.

SV

that sounds like a good idea knihc, an interior design contest would be really interesting. was domino's breitling a bentley too? i'm kinda confused... <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.germancarfans.com/images/forums/nixweiss.gif" BORDER="0">

DoMiNo
01-16-2006, 09:11 PM
Yes, the car I designed was a collaboration between Breitling and Bentley (as the two companies already work together). An interior contest sounds interesting... I'd be up for it, but let's make sure enough people would participate.<p>The commercial vehicle isn't a bad idea either... although Axis, did you have any specifics in mind? Perhaps a certain problem to solve, or something?

One idea I thought of a while ago was a "First Car" design contest. Design a car with teen drivers in mind, reconciling economy and safety concerns with the style-conscious nature of teen consumers.<p>But frankly, I'm kind of digging the interior design contest. It's something new.

That would be an OK contest, although none om my cons are in tere, and a clear, unified contest would be good, so that all are doing the same thing and there would be no judgin bias (ie if you liked a certain icon more than another). <p>I will edit in some ideas below:<p>"Create a compact car which gives a feeling of youth, speed, and optional agressiveness. It must stand out amongst the youth market, as well as win the lusts of middle-age-crises men. And, to be even more compatible with the youth market, it must be modifiable (though make sure the image is stock). You must also show some modern interior pleasures which will enhance the youth thrill of the vehicle."<p>"Create a vehicle with the bold looks of french auto design combined with american looks that are BOTH upscale, alrge and imposing, while also have a conservative and allurious feel (ie combo of Renault, Lincoln, Buick). The result should be a vehicle that would really spike the consideration of older buyers."<p>"Create an MPV which would maximize thrill, hot styling, interior flexibility abd ESPECIALLY make good use of interior room. It must be a vehcile in which youth and the feamle gender would not be embarasse in at any time. I emphasize functionality, however. It may be no larger than the Mazda5."<p>"Create the cheekiest vehicle imaginable- but make the design likeable enough that it would still have massive sales opportunities. Examples are Renault Twingo ad Nissan Micra."<p>"Create a vehicle that is packed with tecnological safety innovations, and at the same time, gives the exterior impression that it is safe."<p><br>I would reccomend one of these, or something along the lines, as they are specific, fit a wide range of participants, and would be easy to judge.<p><br>And more than that, PLEASE let's get started! I may be new to this board but I sure love any reason to design.<BR><BR>

That's just rephrassed :D but if possile lets add some optional interior designing as well- with these kinds of vehicles, ie honda civic si, there is a lot of interior involvement to strike thesse audiences<p>sounds gd, but really, I just wanna get started :D

Thanks man. Cool idea, too, but I'd really prefer to keep the contests more holistic... focused on the designs of the car as a whole rather than basing it around one certain feature. Also, it seems like it's been a while since we did a contest not tied to a certain brand. Let's do something open; make up our own brands or at least choose whichever we want. i like the enzo idea. a bit premature, but the redesign will most probably have to be revolutionary. Can you copy the F1 style again? An evolutionary design may not be as acceptable as it was before. I like the F50's design, but the car was definitely not the best ferrari could offer, design or performance wise. The enzo is pretty insane, as was the F40. An insane F70 design is practically required.

the idea of designing a car for a company that doesn't make cars might be interesting. though I don't see how much an electronics company can influence the exterior design of a car besides apple. but that could be a challenge!

Burns,<p>Cadillac has already established its reinvented design language and in recent years have unveiled many new concepts and production cars. I admire Cadillac's design very much, but both Domino and I have done Cadillac concepts on here before and I personally feel they're overdone. I figured since he came in second that we could agree on a contest theme we both liked.<p>Cadillac already has status and I wanted this contest to be about a brand that does not. I have chosen a brand challenge with a lot of promise for a variety of ideas. You will be able to realize a very similar vision if you so choose. If you like domestics then I think you will see a lot of potential in this contest. I am designing the banner and contest brief and Domino will probably post it within a day or two.<BR><BR>

A Rival for the Tata Nano - companies are gonna want to try and beat Tata's creation on price and ability, how about we submit our ideas? Mahindra, Maruti e.t.c

Austins rebirth - Now that the Chinese own Austin, there's a big chance that they'll revive Austin. How about we design some possible future Austins? Could be any segment or size and it could be either a retro product or a very modern proposal?

Rover? Didn't they get sold off?
Not quite.. the Chinese got the rights to build Rovers, but they didn't get the name. tata now own the Rover name - it came with the deal as Ford had previously bought the Rover name from BMW to avoid the chinese using the Rover name on a landrover clone. The Chinese do however own the MG name.

Confusing isn't it!

I've been giving it a lot of thought and keep coming around the idea of resurrecting a classic nameplate. I think it would be nice to reinterpret a classic design like a Packard or Duesenberg in a modern way, but the thing is, I seem to recall that we had a contest like this. Perhaps I'm just thinking of the British roadster contest ...

Either way, I think resurrecting the name and design cues of a long-dead manufacturer (i.e. something pre-WW2 or very early postwar era) would be a good contest. If there's support for it, then by all means, let's do it.

Okay, here's my idea. A wealthy business tycoon has decided to acquire the rights to a war-era automobile company and resurrect it, perhaps like Marcos in the UK (for a few years), or Bugatti, or DeLorean here in America. Yeah, I know they're not war-era, and granted, Stephen Wynne (the current owner of DeLorean) is still building the same basic DMC12 body that was built 25 years ago, but this tycoon has greater aspirations and wants to make a genuinely modern classic to go against cars like the Bentley Continental and Rolls Royce Phantom, and this is which is why he's hired you as his design director.

I suppose we just have to decide whether the contest will be brand specific or open to all cars of the war era. I'd personally prefer it to be open-ended, so that every participant can choose what marque to resurrect. So many to choose from ... Auburn, Briscoe, Cord, Duesenberg ... I can't think of an E make, hehe.

I'll see if I can do an inspirational contest banner later tonight. :)

Citroeniste

Probably would want to call it the Pre-WWII era, since Auburn, Cord, Dusenburg, Pierce-Arrow, Stutz, etc. were all out of business by 1939. Of the independent presitge manufacturers, only Packard was able to survive the depression and continue in the car business post-war. My vote would be for Cord, Duesenburg, or Stutz.

the future
04-20-2008, 05:34 PM
I posted my ideas earlier in another thread, so I put them now where they belong:

1) Sexiest car alive: We all love gorgeous cars with breathtaking curves. Design a car that simply has the biggest sex appeal of all cars ever made.

2) R Class successor: The current R Class is a flop. Even though Mercedes-Benz tried hard to build a crossover between wagon and SUV, the R Class is still considered as a "soccer mum car". Design a successor of the R Class which is NOT a soccer mum car, but whose interior is equal or bigger.

3) VW Scirocco: Design a car that DESERVES the "Scirocco" name plate

4) Aston Martin DBF1: There is a new rumour about Dave Richards bringing Aston Martin to Formula One. The base of this contest is an outline of a current F1 car. You can either import it into Photoshop or print and color it. The aim is to design the best looking F1 livery.

5) Clinton, McCain or Obama? We don't know yet. Whoever wins deserves a new state limousine. Design a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, a Lincoln Continental Town Car or whatever you think the next President of the US should drive. Or maybe you'll prefer a new Zil 41047 for Dmitri Medvedev... :D

Nissan Silvia

And many more that I can't think of. That would be the beauty of this - lots of choice.

Designing a car is always more fun when it's more of a challenge. Instead of making statements like that, how about embracing the challenge and designing a Mercury that will appeal to a younger audience?

Some people take the pi$$ out of my MG, calling it an "old mans Rover" and asking where my pipe and slippers are. I'm guessing i'd get the same thing in NA and Canada if I drove a Mercury, so change it Steve, make a trendy Mercury if you can.

Given that Mercury is in need of a totally new image and look, I would think it would be most challenging. I'd add in the stipulation that the designs be as real-world oriented as possible and leave the wild flights of fantasy aside.

What would Mercury's new face look like? That could be the focus no pun intended. The nose could be on any kind of car, but what will the new corporate face be?
