View Full Version : Nissan Z-Car Design Contest

11-15-2005, 02:26 PM
Nissan's iconic Z is aging quickly, and the corporation needs a totally new, fresh-looking, and forward thinking design to take its sports car to the next generation. The design can be as radical or as different as one sees fit, and will probably pave the future of nissan design in general. however, no matter how radical the design is, it is absolutely necessary that it still has a hint of heritage that makes the Z as iconic as it is.
Your task is to design the New Nissan Z-Car.

Contest will close on the 29th of November.
Sorry for the delay in the contest, this wasn't knihc2008's orginal idea.
Good luck.

11-15-2005, 05:54 PM
hmm, this should be interesting. perfect timing, too, i'm swamped with schoolwork this week but thanksgiving break starts this weekend, so i'll have plenty of time.

11-15-2005, 07:05 PM
finally...i think i might give this one a try

11-15-2005, 07:45 PM
i think the entries for this should be absolutely swell. the Z is such an iconic sports car that, unlike a corvette or 911, is open to so many different and unique interpretations. there are a couple entries from a certain few people i'm looking forward to seeing.. don't disappoint me, contest! :D

11-16-2005, 04:14 PM
ill go for this one.
are you allowed to post your drwing for a contest as a WIP? i dont think it says anything about that in the rules..

11-16-2005, 10:09 PM
can I still join this?

11-17-2005, 03:59 PM
you still have about 2 weeks to do it, dont worry

wow, i'm first to post an entry! haha i'm usually one of the last...anyway, it's partly inspired by the GT-R PROTO concept, (obviously, i suppose); i tried to integrate some GT-R styling cues while still keeping it recognizably a Z, but i'm not sure if i succeeded. ah well, i can't wait to hear your C&C

11-21-2005, 07:52 PM

11-22-2005, 11:02 AM
SV, I think it's amazing. The front is... spectacular. Well done.
Obviously it's very similar to the "outgoing" model, but mine was a gentle evolution, too. Though unless it comes out okay on the digital cam, I may not enter, since I have no access to a scanner (or markers/colored pencils, for that matter) over here.
Anyway, excellent job.

Actually, I must admit, after looking at it for a while, I have changed my opinion. It looks great! Love the frontal treatment especially. Really suits the styling of the whole thing.

11-22-2005, 08:56 PM
wow knihc, i think the same thing when i see his entries too, what a coincidence =P
i guess that explained it: it looks spectacular plumcrazy. your technique is perfect and the only thing that bugs me about the design is that the side is a bit featureless, what with no character line and all. still, your entry is far better than mine, so i shouldn't be talking

11-22-2005, 09:05 PM
C'mon now SV. Your design has a much more aggressive shape. I just wanted to see a sleek and pretty car which leaves it a bit featureless on the sides. But I was going for a "pretty" look and feel. I got the same exact comment on another board about my slab sides!!

In a surprise announcement made Saturday at a Nissan-sponsored street racing event in Long Beach, Jed ConnellySVP Sales and Marketing for the corporations North American operationsaffirmed that the current Zs replacement would cater more to the vast tuner demographic. Thus, the simultaneous unveilingin Southern California and Miami, Florida, two vibrant, ethnically-diverse cities which comprise the center of the street racing phenomenonis a nod to the consumers who have shaped the development of the new vehicle. We listen to consumers, said Connelly in a private interview, We found that older buyers gravitate more toward the upscale G35, while the younger ones see more potential in the Z, which is a more affordable, performance-oriented alternative. As such we have to accommodate to that desire for speed, for edginess and style that young buyers crave.
The new Z, he explains, is a soft evolution of the same themebig bang, for not-so-big bucksthat has made the Z a perennial favorite for all enthusiasts. Blending cues from recent Nissan show cars with the extra flair of a tuner automobile, Nissan designers created a car that is spiritually the same, but with more presence. The swept-up DLO and front door cut line faintly recall the Azeal concept, while the lights, front splitter, ground effects, and door handles recall the recent Sport Concept. The addition of several ventsall functionalgives the car a racer look while maintaining the integrity of the overall design.
Beneath the carbon fiber hood insertstandard on all modelslies the buyers choice of Nissans venerable 3.5L V6, now massaged to produce 315hp, or a twin-turbocharged version which boosts that output to a Corvette-killing 430hp. Twin Turbo models are denoted by subtle visual cues which include carbon fiber on the front splitter, an asymmetrical front air intake, larger exhausts, and 20-inch Samurai 3-piece aluminum wheels.
Performance numbers have not yet been finalized, but Connelly assured the Long Beach crowd that the new Z will sport considerably improved handling and all-around performance. I have to say I don't really like the "Z" lights Konrad...looks a little gimmicky. The rest looks cool though, almost a cross between the last generation Z and the current one.

Domino, that design is awesome! The only thing I don't really like is all of the grilles, and yes, I do understand why you did put them there. Just my personal opinion. Also, I reckon if there was less overhang at the front it would look even better.

my T-grille! :D
so i think the car is looking too FWD as opposed to RWD. i think it's because there's so much more rear-wheel-to-door sheetmetal than there is front-wheel-to-door sheetmetal. looks a bit too uptight, a little too RSX/eclipse competitor rather than a Z, yknow? still, a really nice looking car.

here we go fellas, my Nissan Z. i thought the current iteration was way too heavy looking, so my first goal was to make the car look lighter and more nimble. yet still mean and sporty. the first thing you'll notice is the pronounced fender flares, which rise above the center point, creating for a mean, aggressive stance. the front greets rearview mirrors with large headlamps and powerful three-duct air dam. the headlamp and side-air dam shape, put together, make a very quiet homage to the original 240z, as is the rear window kick and general stance: put the two cars side to side and the inspiration is clear, though my itself the new Z looks thoroughly mean, modern, and unique. the most beautiful section of the car is, imo, the rear 3/4 panel, with rising fender flares, dipping down low before rising up again smoothly into the hatchback form. this classical shape is contrasted by the modern and striking interaction of the rear window with the side glass and sharp triangular taillamps with sharp graphics.
anyway, i could go on and on, but pictures are worth a thousand words. my nissan Z.

enjoy
p.s. the original image isn't as rough-looking, i just thought the contrast-upped gritty-image fit the mean Z-look better than a neat, tidy drawing. nonetheless, here is the original drawing if any of you are curious: http://i13.photobucket.com/alb...0.jpg

SLR, how well you sketch doesnt matter in these competitions(to an extent). And i think your sketches are pretty good regardless of your age. Just focus on your designs and think creatively. and dont worry about what pencils to use. i dont.

12-03-2005, 04:43 PM
yay! 100 posts. By the way, SLR, these are not sketching contests, they are design contests. judge based on design, not how good the drawing is(and that goes for everyone):-)

i'm just wondering, is it sort of the custom for the mod (mrlynch in this case) to PM me and ask for a contest idea? 'cuz that's what happened the last two times, i wonder if it would be ok for me to just PM him with my contest idea..
