View Full Version : Car/Concept by a NON-Automotive Company Contest

07-05-2005, 02:49 PM
Alright... this should be very interesting.
Your task is to design a car for a NON-automotive company/brand (i.e. electronics, fashion or any other industry). The rules are very simple. The entry can come from any company, as long as it captures the essence of the brand.

Here is an example of the Nike One 2022 Concept *cough* GT4 *cough*

Contest will close on thursday the 21st of July
Any questions, just P.M me

of motor trend contest fame, i guess.
very interesting.

True, MT did something similar for one of their contests, but it's actually quite a common exercise for design students, and again, it forces people to think outside of their normal conceptions of an automobile.

Presenting...
The Apple iCar!

The Apple iCar utilizes an elegant compact wagon form factor, proving spaciousness, comfort, and utility without requiring large exterior dimentions. As a cost-cutting measure, iSight cameras are used as rear view mirrors, the images of which can be seen on the LCD panel housing the instrument gauges. The iCar utilized cutting-edge Hybrid technology licensed from Toyota to supplement the petrolium engin and has a space-saving 8-gallon gas tank.
The iCar will be avaliable in the iCar 3.0, iCar 3.5, and the iCar mini. All three models will utilize powerful V6 engines to provide excellent performance. The iCar is expected to last approximately 300 miles between fill-ups. Belkin and many other companies have announced that they will offer spare gas tanks for those who wish to extend their driving range.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is properly maintained, the engine hood can only be opened by an Apple Certified Mechanic.
The iCar is equipped with an Apple-exclusive CST-- "Continuous Shuffle Transmission". This transmission will shuffle between various gears to maximise your driving experience.
All iCars will feature a 1 year comprehensive warranty. AppleCare extended warranties for 3 years will be avaliable.
The iCar will be avaliable only in Apple's Signature White color. iCar minis will be avaliable in your choice of Blue, Pink, Silver, or Green.
(Do note that this is somewhat intended to be a sarcastic parody of the iPod, to an extent.)

I'm impressed anonms! Very clever design, which definitely fits with the brand. Interesting wing mirrors... are they cameras? Nice going man! If you added a little bit of color, this thing could look even better.
Of course doesn't mean Apple is off limits... if that's what you were going to do, go for it EleanorGT.

Its made by a competitor of Apple
Is it possible for the description of the car to be put alongside the picture in the voting threads. It would allow the person who is voting to see why the artist drew the picture in this way and how it relates back to the company they chose.

A partnership between the world's foremost luxury automaker and a producer of the most sophisticated, most beautiful timepieces on earth spawns a luxury touring car that is as fast, luxurious, and exclusive as it is beautiful.
Behold the Breitling Datora coup, a collaboration between Breitling Watches and Bentley motors. The British Racing Green super coupe pays homage to a flourishing partnership between the two brands; Breitling has produced several exclusive timepieces and even instruments for Bentley Motors, but this is Bentley's first attempt at a Breitling-branded automobile. Per customer demand, Breitling acknowledges that a limited production run would be feasible.
The Datora's extravagant exterior captures the boldness of Breitling: The polished aluminum fascia recalls the preferred material on the company's indestructible chronographs. Polished side port exhausts and exit vents mimic the famed wristband design of the Breitling Navitimer Montbrillant Datora, the car's namesake. The chiseled shape of the car signifies precision and quality, two traits which characterize this maker of extraordinary timepieces. 22" 3-piece aluminum alloy wheels--twelve spokes, naturally--evoke the gears inside a Breitling chronograph. The theme continues inside, in a lavish interior swathed in natural-dyed leather and stainless steel, Breitling-designed gauges and switchgear. The car is powered by the monstruous Bentley W12, tuned to put out a pavement-wrenching 600 horsepower and 600 lb/ft of torque. Top Speed, the company claims, is well over 200mph.

wow, that looks awesome. it looks like you use pen for your drawings, do you start off in pencil and then draw over the lines in pen? if so, what kind of pen do you use? because whenever i draw over a pencil line with pen, the ink starts coming out all funny.
oh yeah, and what kind of markers do you use? i'm thinking of getting some markers, but i'm trying to figure out what the good ones are. anyway, your entry is awesome, great work as usual
i love your entry too superfresa, really clever

that looks awsome Domino. How do you come up with that awsome/crazy/beautiful rim design?

07-14-2005, 01:03 PM
Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate it. It was fun to take a brand and turn it into something tangible like this, I think it's a good exercise in creative thinking, and I am really impressed at how everyone's entries have turned out.
SV: You're correct, I sketch my ideas out in pencil first, then go over them with pen. I typically stick to a normal ballpoint pen, I think it gives me more control than a felt tip art pen because I can modulate the weight of the line much easier. Plus, it often ends up looking smoother (sometimes I think I don't have very steady hands, especially in the details). Besides, with ballpoint--as opposed to felt tip--the ink doesn't bleed. I don't often use markers, instead I try to stick to colored pencil (Prismacolor, mostly); I still need to learn the finer points of working with markers. However as you can see I accented this particular drawing with some marker... I have a set of Prismacolors, and my mom's an interior designer so she also uses Prismas/Copics in her work, which every now and then I use. Knihc knows a great deal more than me, I'm sure, as far as which to buy and how best to use them.
Again, thanks for the comments, guys, looking forward to some more entries!!

07-14-2005, 01:08 PM
Toxic: These rims were kind of tough to dream up; my main goal was to evoke some part of a watch in the design, so I spent a lot of time thinking of intricate watch face-like designs, which I then tried to kind of combine with the shape of a watch gear. other than that it was basically trial and error... I tried probably a dozen designs before I settled on that one... maybe I'll scan my concepts so you can get a little better idea of the process. I was happy with the way they turned out, glad you like them.

Its aggressive design lets
the beholder expect the car to be a little beast,
what it ideed is.
The most important thing when designing a new
car is originality. The Enkidu mustnt remind of
any other car. It must have its own character just
like everything that has got the Fila badge on it.
Being a Fila, the Enkidu must be influenced by the
main design lines of Fila. Bold sporty lines are neseccery
in a Fila car. even the colors are pure
Fila : red body, blue tinted windows and a white
interior.
Side mirrors do not exist. They have been replaced
by mini cameras integrated in the rear of the car.
THE SAFTY:
The Enkidu is equipped with all safty systems
you need. ABS, ESP and 6 airbags are standard.
Other safty systems can be offered for an extra
charge.
The cars body is built completely out of Aluminium.
THE ENGINE:
The direct compititor of the Enkidu is -performance wise- the Lotus Elise.
The Enkidu has got a stronger engine, built however
according to a similar concept : small capactiy, light
weigh and a relatively high maximum tourque. This
helps the car to reach 100km/h in less than 5
seconds, which is a very good performance,
considering the size of the engine and the weigh
of the car.
engine 4 cylinders
number of valves/cyl. 4
capacity 1995 cm3
max power 201 hp
max torque 210 Nm
acceleration (0-100km/h) 4,8 s
max speed 246 km/h
THE DOORS:
To complete the sporty image of the Enkidu, the doors are designed to be opened like wings. They are
connected to inner, back side of the front fender and
are opend diagonally with more iclination towards the front than towards the top.
THE INTERIOR:
The interior will be the most perfectly built part of the car. Eventually Fila has a huge experience in working
with leather, and that was what made them to one of
the leading sports wear companies in the world.
Not only leather is involved in the sporty, yet comfortable (for such a car) interior,
but also aluminium, that builds the most parts of the middle console. Aluminium
is also a styling element that emphasizes the sporty caracter of the vehicle.
Technically, the interior is equipped with every thing you need to have in a sports car. Beside that, there are
some more equipments that can be offerd as extras for
an extra charge, such as the navigation system
(combined with a dvd-player).
The large display is always there, whether the car is equipped with a navigation system or not. Its also a
radio/cd-mp3-player display.

Car-fan: What an awesome Idea... a company I'd never thought of trying. And it's ironic that Puma already has tie-ins with Goodyear for shoes, I think! Visually, it just screams Puma! Great job... nice rims too.
Hussein: Wow, of course I can't say enough about your designs (and beautiful skills). I'm sure you know more about the subtleties of design than I, and conveying a message in a more subliminal way, but as much as I love your car I can't see the brand in it as I can in some of the previous entries.
