I realize LA is taking place now and Detroit is next but the only show I care about is Chicago. I was on the CAS website and was reading the blog by Paul Brian, the Director of Communications for the Chicago Auto Trade Association. He mentions that Chicago has 18 world or NA debuts on the books and they may get more. Just thought I would share that.

I don't want to get ahead of myself here, and the upcoming Detroit NAIAS I very eager about; I don't want to wish the Holidays or the Month of December (and January) away, but one Chicago debut I'm seriously anticipating is the rumored Pontiac G8.
I'm sure they'll be many significant debuts.

Most or all of them have debuted at L.A. or are scheduled to debut in Detroit. Is the Jaguar XF scheduled to debut in Detroit or is it the only vehicle in the list that will premiere in Chicago?

Not the most exciting news but I read the restyled Mercury Montego and Ford Freestyle will debut in Chicago. It looks like the Saturn Astra is too.

I believe both of them will be just major facelifts in which the powertrain will be overhauled and the Freestyle will sport the three-bar grille. I thought the Freestyle was canned. Maybe not I guess...

the only confirmed debuts for chicago seem to be the pontiac commodore and the saturn astra. the rest are carryovers from other shows. jaguar is rumored (or confirmed) to unveil a xf concept at detroit, so it should probably make its way to chicago.

I've heard that the 2008 Scions (the second-generation xB and the xD, which replaces the xA) will officially debut at the Chicago Auto Show. Current rumor has it that the new xB is based off the JDM Toyota Corolla Fielder wagon platform and the xD is essentially a Scion-badged version of the Toyota Auris hatchback.

if you check the thread in the news section, nismo posted something from someone at scionlife who went to the preview and said that the xd was not a scion badged auris

What I've been hearing is that people who saw the new Scions at a private event last weekend say they don't look anything like any other Toyota from anywhere in the world and they both have HUGE c-pillars. I'd be surprised if the reveal is in Chicago. Scion has made nearly all of its big announcements in New York.

Back in the good old days, most debuts were in Chicago. That was before Detroit became a true international show. Detroit is a manufacturers show where Chicago is a show more for consumers. I think it stinks that there aren't more debuts in Chicago.

Now I'm wondering if the anticipated Pontiac G8 will appear in Chicago.
I'm also wondering: Being the Ford 500 was shown in NAIAS Detroit, the Montego and Freestyle are on deck, would these debut in Chicago? Also the production Fairlane (I know the name will change) and it's Lincoln sibling; being the Freestar and Monterey are now history, are they, or at least one, slated for Chicago, or perhaps later for New York?
Also, the production Lincoln MKS, will this be debuting in Chicago? It's D3 based, like the other Ford vehicles mentioned above and last year's concept was close to production. This should be interesting because it'll also introduce the Lincoln-exclusive 3.7L V6, maybe good for 280-300HP.
I brought this up because the production Fairlane and MKS, I understand, were present in Ford's recent private "showroom of the future" meetings. Also, due to recent debuts and fanfare, there hasn't been much mention of the MKS.

There's been recent articles from other sites regarding the upcoming Pontiac G8:
They seem to state that it's all but confirmed and will be the Holden Commodore imported from Australia with necessary changes for Pontiac's design language, and this is to either be announced at meetings at the Chicago auto show, or actually shown at Chicago.
Also stated; the Aussie Commodore-based G8 will shortly be succeeded by a Zeta sedan built in Canada, with some body changes, don't know how extreme.
Mercury Montego and Ford Freestyle are allegedly conformed to be shown... still waiting on the production Ford Fairlane, it's recently confirmed Lincoln sibling and production Lincoln MKS luxury sedan.

The Commodore will come to the US as a Pontiac G8 and will debut in Chicago. After that, I think production will be transfered to the Oshawa plant in Canada. I know the G8 is official.

So the Pontiac G8 looks to be official at Chicago, which is a major hopeful and a really good thing.
But there seems to be a couple of slightly conflicting reports in the G8: One seems to state it will be the Commodore modified to Pontiac design language, but another seems to state that it will be more dramatic from the A-pillar forward, favoring the Solstice (which would be seriously great), and one report says it's 5" shorter than a 2007 Grand Prix, and another says it's longer and wider than the 2007 Grand Prix, which I would hope.
Favorite scenario: the longer and wider G8 (with V8 power) with the Solstice front would be a juicy offering from Pontiac
I guess we will all have to wait and see, this will all be out after Super Bowl Sunday, during Chicago's press days.

So, from what we know at this point (1/24/07)...
Here's what they're definitely premiering at Chicago so far (the givens):
Toyota's next-generation Highlander (along with Highlander Hybrid) and Scion's Next xB and xD (xA replacement), Ford Freestyle and Mercury Montego updates (like the 500), Nissan Titan update, and either a formal announcement or the actual showing of the upcoming Pontiac G8.
Either update me or correct me if I'm wrong on any of these.
Chicago seems to be a show that's focused to the consumer, and that's a good thing; more debuts of real products of which we'll see and drive. Concepts are dazzling and show much promise and are closer to reality more and more lately, but the production debuts are here and now, or will be in a matter of months as we see them, while the concepts either influence design, test reaction, showcase in general, or set a preview of what may or will arrive down the road.

I read in the media update that Pontiac is indeed unveiling the G8, Chevrolet may have as many as 6 debuts, Chrysler has three debuts, Nissan is unveiling the facelifted Armada and Pathfinder, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is making it's N.A. debut, VW is unveiling the new version of the R32, Kia is debuting a new model, BMW is showing the Alpina B7 (what is that?) and International Truck is debuting a concept truck. This is in addition to what has already been confirmed. I'm surprised Buick is apparently not debuting the LaCrosse Super in Chicago.

Alpina B7 is a hotted up 7 series. Alpina is an "aftermarket" brand in the likes of shelby's in the 60's were to Ford, or RUF is to Porsche; essentially it isnt BMW but im pretty sure BMW sends them white body cars, and sells their vehicles in their showroom. The U.S. has only seen one other BMW, endorsed, i guess would be the word, model, which was the alpina v8 roadster, a z8 with alpina body kit and an automatic, plus the 4.8 liter v8 used in the 4.8is x5 in place of the m5 sourced 4.9 liter v8
the b7, essentially is an S-class amg competitor, s8, or an XJR competitor (though the power of the XJR is a little lowly now) and is the closest thing to an M7. it can only be assumed BMW is selling the Alpina B7 here, is because they dont feel the need to waste R&D, and M cars are manuals, which the b7 is not; though an M7 really could happen with a manual, albeit an SMG manual, but i guess the answer is really only known by BMW

So we will see the G8?! Great!! I wonder which news was correct: The Commodore which is to be updated with Pontiac design language, or a larger version with a more Solstice nose, that would be great! There were conflicting reports which I posted earlier on.
Also, now I'm curious, what will the 6 Chevrolet debuts and the 3 Chrysler debuts be? I suppose we'll all know after a week. form now (1/28/07).

The Solstice face would lose its luster if similarities carried over. I'd say a new face is more likely than such grafting.

Okay....I'm came in from KC for the show and generally I was happy with it. Granted we didn't bother to look at the floorplan before setting in....and didn't get to the 'cool' side until later in the afternoon, but that's my fault.
My takeaway from this show is that generally speaking GM looks like it should recover from the doldrums it now finds itself in and possibly be 'safe' for another 5-10 years. Ford on the other hand might be in trouble. Between Ford's primary display, Lincoln, and Merucry it was plain boring. There's just nothing there. Ford's only hope are they're trucks, the rest, I hate to say it, is crap. Why can't, oh please, why can't they simply use the Modeo and the Euro Focus stateside? Both of those cars have no American equivalent.....they're 10 times better than what we get stuck with. Why, oh why is this so hard for them to understand?
Don't get the sentiment of this post wrong, I want ford to recover, but in my view they just keep shoveling dirt out of a hole that's already 5 feet deep.
