1. Saab by Spyker - The ink has dried on the Saab/Spyker union, so what do YOU envision for the future of the storied Sweedish brand?

2. Pikes Peak Hill Climb Racer - The king of the hill the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=escudo+pikes+peak&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=9lSzS9jkLMOC8gaf7uzxAQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBEQsAQwAA) has been around for quite some time now and is getting a bit long in the tooth. Now's your chance to redesign the legend or better yet throw down the gauntlet and unleash a new challenger to take down the king.

And so the Phoenix shall rise! At the eleventh hour, Spyker Automotive came through and saved SAAB from extinction. Now the brand is free from GM's reins and is able to be as quirky as it wants to be. Your mission designers, is to envision a future vehicle that will put SAAB back on top and wipe away the negative stigma that has shadowed the brand under the leadership of GM.

Good luck designers!!! This contest will end on Apr 14.
Also, don't forget to post your development sketches and ideations in the Contest Development Thread (http://www.carspyshots.net/showthread.php?t=16571)

Would it compete with BMW's 3-series, Z4, 6-series, or something else entirely?

Hi everyone I haven't posted in a loooong time, but anyways... here is my entry - the Saab 9-S (the "S" stands for Spyker ;) ). It's a 2+2 shooting brake with the usual selection of turbo powerplants and a world first HCCI production engine! Enjoy~

Pencil render is obviously not as good as SV's but I tried :P

WOW! Welcome back and what a way to announce your return, great work.

It seems like more and more designers are having a hard time meeting the deadlines with each contest. So moving forward I've decided to make some changes to the rules. Instead of the standard ten days, contest will now run from the first week of each month until the 25/26 of each month (23rd in February) with the last five days of the month allotted for voting. Thus eliminating the need for extensions and the pressure to perform within a short turnaround. So to ensure Maximum Participation you now have almost a full month to flesh out your ideas. That being said contest now extended until April 25th.

I've tried a few ideas, so far, but nothing is working for me just yet.

I've had a shot at a 1-series rival, a Prius/Volt style ethanol/electric hybrid, and a large estate.

I don't want to do a Sonnet because, well, that would be a bit predictable. Hmmm... I'm gonna have to brainstorm some ideas.

Others (not necessarily just in this competition, but also the internet car-loving community as a whole) have looked to SAAB's past to go towards the future. While I agree that maybe taking a few hints or cues from past models is a nice way of bringing some of SAAB's brilliant past back into their lineup, I think that what would really help SAAB's image is some NEW, EXCITING products, similar to how Audi has given its brand image a lift with the R8.

So, I've decided on doing a Jaaag XKR/BMW M6 competitor. Hope you like it.

I understand now that the "98" moniker has already been used by SAAB in 1974 on a Combi Coupe version of their long-running 95 series, but I didn't know at the time of drawing. Forgive me. :)

Nath has been unable to sign into CSS so I'm posting his entry for him:

For a Saab to be a saviour I think it will have to make money, so no great looking but way too expensive for a Saab coupes or supercars here.

So instead we get a desirable but affordable C segment hatch cum coupe, The Saab Tio is new and revolutionary but is designed to compliment the current range. There are Saab cues, but nothing too retro, the floating bonnet reminisces the sheer surfaces of the 80's 90, the narrow grille and lights on the corner of the car have a touch of 99. 92 through to 99, 900, 9000, 93, 95, a new Saab breaking free of GM can only have one name. Tio.

The Saab 9-3 Concept

I see this as a possible 9-3 replacement ina notch back style...or even as a car to sit above the 9-5...something to compete with the big players on increased dimensions ofcourse. I have opted for a different approach to Saab's design with a few changes like omitting the grille and instead going for a dominant long Saab like bonnet...

I have always picture Saab to be the lean slender car of the lot and hence the deeply curved centre, forward and rear profile...I havent been able to do the rear maybe later if I get the time...This is a rough view of what I think the new Saab should be. Under Spyker Saab can proudly push their 9-3, to the status it deserves. Its definitely a car that can beat the C, 3series and A4. I guess this could be a good way 2 do it.

PS: How do I post the picture as a whole image on the wall like others do??...

Nath
04-27-2010, 03:56 PM
I like how aggresive it is, if it was the larger size it looks almost a CLS style 4dr coupe.
Oh and I hosted on imageshack, usually post thumbnails but for comps or to display my design work then put image of about 800px up with imageshack

All entries are great, but Nath takes the prize. You have interperated the Saab 'look' in a way that I or anyone else would never have considered. It blends some retro Saab design cues with modern ideas and themes. The name is also well thought out and fits the car.

Amazing!

My entry is half done. I abandoned finishing it for 2 reasons. 1) Couldn't log on to CSS so saw no point in finishing as I am busy at the moment anyway (I didn't want to submit a sketch, I love Saab too much to submit a half finished entry) and 2) When I saw your Saab Nath, I knew it was game over in this contest!

ElementW - Saab Sonnet. 4 POINTS
Is a really nice design with plenty of modern Saab cues, looks smooth, sleek and definately Swedish. Really like the wheels and making me regret stealing them for my design.

Opp-Lock - Saab 9-S. 3 POINTS
Like the front on this and again very Saab though kind of a modern Reliant Scimitar GTE at the same time. Be interesting to see what happens to that big crease at the rear.

Dreamermystique - Saab 9-3 Concept. 2 POINTS
Very nearly put this first as it's unashamedly bold. Be interesting to see how it would look 'productionised'.

ACCartoons - Saab 98R. 1 POINT
Very dramatic though not altogether Saab. Think it's a little bit fussy to be Swedish and would probably save Saab just the like the SV saved MG ;) but just as mad and fun.

Mr. Burns
A beautifully drawn car, really like the drawing style but the design while neat doesn't seem to take the brand anywhere. Maybe it's just a little subdued compared to other entries (and other designs of yours on this forum)

4 - Nath - Fabulous car; at once instantly Saab but completely fresh. It's precisely the stylistic departure they need, in a segment where they would do well. I love how it looks like a concept car and yet completely production ready. And it's a beautiful render. Maybe my very favorite of your designs.
2 - Opp-Lock - Love the aggressive stance, love the body style; as with Nath's design, this strikes me as the perfect segment for Saab. Beautiful sketch, as well.
2 - ACcartoons - Not sure I would call it beautiful, but it's nothing if not bold. Kudos for morphing the traditional Saab face into something with muscle car aggression. Would make a great new Sonnett!
2 - dreamersmystique - Yours was the riskiest departure, and the only one to completely eschew the traditional Saab grille in its entirety. And you prove that it can work brilliantly! Sexy car, another great Sonnett revival.

I couldnt decide between Nath and Opp-Lock...

Nath: 4
your concept gives Saab entry into a very important market segment...
Sharp yet edgy styling from front to rear is just perfect...anduage. especially the bit with rear fins on the roofline...nice touch... The 3 things I didnt agree with is the black strip conencting headlamp to side...just a tad busy for a Saab...It looks good buts Saabs have always been proud of clean...designs and I like that... 2nd is the rear...I kinda like Saabs white-frost LEDs...its a Saab feauture I like very much...3rdly u omitted the "tape-glass green house"...its supposed to be an important part of Saabs new aviation inspired design language.

Opp-Lock: 4
Yours was a much sharper design probably a car to fight the Volvo C30, 1 Series and Audi A3...I like the fully connected headlamp and grille feauture...reminiscent of the old sonnet...and the best bit is the way the front air scoops mould flawlessly to give a sporty look...I really cant find anything disagreeable in your design, simple and to the point.

Element W: 2
Yours was the safest design, very Saab-like...ofcourse and definitely almost production like...but its just not inspired enough...there isnt a new direction in your design and thats my only qualm...not a very serious one though...that said...your Sonnet is definitely a must for their new line up...

Nath 5 / This is EXACTLY the vehicle Saab needs but will never get because it's being run by a kit car maker with no experience in real cars.

ElementW 3 / A new Sonnett aimed at the Scirocco but at a believable price point (25K to start) would also sell like mad.

Opp-Lock 1 / very daring but too Honda Crosstour in the nose for me. The nose for me does not even remotely work, but the rest of the car is 10/10 Saab

Mr.Burns 1 / very Saab 99 feeling but the nose is 100% Chevy Volt to me a bit more Saab DNA could have changed the outcome

4 - Nath - Brilliant rendering (seriously, post a tutorial sometime!) and attractive design. The floating roof motif is common but the way you executed it is very fresh and definitely something I'd like to see on a real car. It's modern, hip, and still very Saab. A class act!
3 - Opp-Lock - A beautiful sketch and nice design, although a bit too cab-backwards for my taste. I'm flattered you used my pencil sketches as a reference point, though I'd say your shading beats mine, as does your line quality!
2 - ElementW - A very nice shape and good line work, but I think you may have shaded the sketch in a bit too much.
1 - Mr. Burns - A good sketch as always, but while the design is attractive I'd say it plays it ever so slightly too safe.

dreamermystique and ACcartoons, both of your sketches were good as well and I had a hard time leaving them out, but they just didn't seem sufficiently Saab-ish to me.
