dsgnr is a bit occupied at the moment and unable to submit two topics therefore leaving the choice up to me:

1. Toyota Corolla - The Toyota Corolla is one of the most popular nameplates in the world as well as the automotive equivalent to vanilla ice-cream. The current model has been on the market for quite some time now and competitors are offering newer, more stylish and exciting subcompacts. With the brand currently not fairing to well in the court of public opinion these days, Your mission is to take some focus off of all of the negative press and design an all new competent, exciting Corolla that will get tongues wagging and customers back into Toyota's showrooms.

2. Hot Wheels Design Challenge - At some point in our life, we have all had an encounter with a Hot Wheels die cast toy car. There is no denying the amount of skill talent and imagination required to design for the 1:64 scale. Just imagine if YOU were awarded the opportunity to design a Hot Wheels model, would it stick to the core brand values of speed and performance or would you break the mould and design something completely out there that would set collectors as well as the target audience of little gearheads into a complete frenzy.

I picked Corolla simply because I think a clean slate is best. It's a great car burdened by unfortunately bland looks. In the Photoshop thread there's a great Scion Td idea (a coupesedan for those who haven't seen it) that would probably--if built--come off the Corolla. With the Jetta, Elantra, and the Focus upping the styling game, Toyota is going to need a dose of style. The next Corolla has the potential to get quite interesting given that the Subaru Imprezza will be more profitable if it merges to the Corolla platform and doing so would inject some driving pulse into the Corolla in return. I also imagine more commonality with the Prius.

looks like we've gotten ourselves a little dilemma here, The poll results are tied should we choose one of the topics above or should we spinoff the current Mustang Battle into a full contest?

what do you guys think...

Frankly, the thought of designing a Corolla "for fun" just doesn't strike me as very compelling. But neither does designing a toy.

I suggest you look up the work of Harald Belker, Fraser Campbell, Josh Henson, Jun Imai or Dwayne Vance to see just how compelling designing a "toy" can be.

I would say go for the Mustang challenge!!

I'm biased, but the Mustang challenge of having instantly recognizable Mustang DNA so that the car perhaps wouldn't even need the horsey is a formidable challenge and a formidable challenge is a good one.

The muscle car wars are back on! The Ford Mustang has always been the leader of the pack, but with the new Camaro and Challenger nipping at its heels the current retro styling is getting a bit staid. With talks of the next model going global, Your mission designers is to design an all new Mustang with "instant recognizability" without relying on retro styling, yet maintaining universal appeal for a world-market application.

Good luck designers!!! This contest will end on Mar 18.
Also, don't forget to post your development sketches and ideations in the Contest Development Thread (http://www.carspyshots.net/showthread.php?t=16571)

Nelson and Element both your designs from the battle are eligible for entry, feel free to post them
or you can develop them further and submit all new entries.

Its from a batch of sketches Ford had done for the current GT500.

Too bad they went with the look of the 2010.

So I was admittedly a bit torn in deciding how to tackle this challenge. It's tough to redesign such an iconic car, especially one that I quite like as-is. Part of me wanted to smooth out the Mustang's rough edges--give it IRS, some smoother bodywork, and imbue it with a little bit of a European GT vibe. But then another part of me wanted to take the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach and stick with unashamed American muscle. I think the result is a compromise between the two; I basically envision a two-prong approach with the Mustang becoming a more sophisticated touring car and the Shelby line distancing itself even further to run with supercars.

Here is a basic sketch of how I envisioned the GT model, with sleeker, more taut, almost Italianate bodywork (think Iso Grifo); it's a simpler, more flowing design but hopefully it retains the elusive Mustang "DNA.". These would be the volume models, obviously, and the idea was to make a more upscale and ultimately more globally appealing car--one that wouldn't look out of place parked alongside an A5, a 3er, or a CLK.

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/366/mustanggtum.jpg

So having taken a more restrained approach with the "everyday" models, I decided to make the Shelby GT500 even more extreme than it is now while retaining its iconic style. Not retro, but unmistakably 'Stang. With the imminent demise of the Dodge Viper, there is room for a second American super sports car to run with the Corvette ZR1, so I see the Shelby pushing 600+ horsepower and using more carbon fiber, carbon ceramic brakes...maybe even a heavy-duty PowerShift sequential gearbox  Lower, longer, sleeker, leaner, meaner...just plain ol' sexy American muscle car with some high-tech twists under the skin.

Here it is in Grabber Blue:

And yes, even fuchsia can be intimidating on a car this aggressive :P:

The Shelbys are great, but the coupe has a little too much 350Zishness in the roof. Maybe it's the oversized (24 inch???) wheels on the coupe sketch but the nose and tail look too truncated. It definitely has the DNA.

Great job, it looks brutal - I love the matte black finish on the fuchsia render.

I'm working on an entry now, its a photoshop based on a very quick sketch...probably won't be as good as your entry but considering I haven't done a PS render in 3 years, it's turning out pretty nicely!

A feeble effort compared to Domino's, but considering I haven't done a full photoshop render in over 3 years I think it turned out decently.

Original sketch was in pen and took about 2 minutes. So yeah, I didn't put a whole lot of thought into the design :P

Tail = YES, but define the tail lights to have 3 segments
Side = good update of heritage cues / bravo
The nose however has no Mustang in it. :(
The side and tail view 8/10

Domino 3 / perfect aggression
MartinEDesign 3 / great heritage cues interpreted
NelsonDesign 3 / has that dressed up designer feel that I loved so much with the Giugiaro Mustang
An amalgam of the above 3 would be a 10/10

Prodigy 1 / Felt more like a Capri which made me think...Mercury needs a Capri and Europe may respond better to that nameplate.

SV - 2 points - The rendering is superb, and the round headlights are really cool, but something in the design doesn't appeal to me, though you kept it in true Mustang spirit!

Domino - 4 points - As always you take the show with this awesome rendering, and a superb design, which combines the new design trends, with the old cool Mustang genes.

Nelson - 2 points - I am giving you the points for your cool sketching style and also the awesome rear design, which I digg :P

Prodigy - 2 points - I think yours look a lot like a normal day driving car which takes the DNA from the Mustang and combines it with the family car, which is kinda cool, but would it sell? I don't know :P

Here's my votes

Domino- Beautiful again, I love the pencil sketch so much! Design is great, but I think you could do better, considering what you've done before.

PRODIGY- Some really cool ideas, maybe a bit Capri in there though, with the proportions.

SV- Cool design, but definentely not your best.

Martin- Cool sketches, love all of em', just not sure which one I am voting for ;)

ElementW- Really radical, loving some of the ideas, but some ideas look a bit too random.
