View Full Version : Design Challenge: Asymmetrical Design Concept

AXIS

1. Asymmetrical Design Challenge - a new dawn of design is upon us. Designers need to design an asymmetrical car.

2. Audi's New Face - Audi's shield grille is getting a bit long in the tooth now and a new direction is needed to bring a breath of fresh air into Audi design. Design a new face for Audi.

There are reasons beyond simply aesthetics why cars are generally designed symmetrically, I just am not quite sure of the point to that topic. So I voted for the Audi topic, even though it's simply plugging a new manufacturer into the contest that just ended.

Sorry for not participating, hopefully I will give this next one a go. I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed the entries from the Ford contest; everyone did a fantastic job.

I agree with you Matt. I guess Audi is the better choice, just extremely similar to the last contest

To avoid the voting being biased towards the Audi topic, Perhaps we should give mrfdesign the opportunity to defend his choice and further explain what he had in mind for the Asymmetrical Design Challenge so that we can get a better understanding of the topic.

Okay guys. First off, please research the idea of assymetrical design and see how current design students are exploring the idea. Heres a link to try out - http://archive.cardesignnews.com/features/2004/040901coventry-show/index.php . This topic is also very challenging and thus the reason i chose. The audi topic was simply for those who wanted a more comfortable topic.

Asymmetrical design sounds like an awesome idea! I've done many in the past but didn't know there was a name for it.

I've explored asymetrical elements with Clarkman, and the sub C.E.P brand and would be very interested to try this. Would it be up to us to choose the level of asymetricalness? The BMW X-coupe concept and Nissan Cube are very slightly asymetrical.

I think the Audi idea is a good one too, but I know deep down you want the first idea to win, mrf, so that's how i'll vote :)

hahaha but I know deep down you, prodigy, also want the first idea to win ;)

Indeed, the X-Coupe is an exploration into assymetrical design. In terms of the level of'' asymmetricalness'' its up to you, as long as its asymmetrical in some way its fine.

Well looks like we've gotten ourselves a tie here, since the Audi topic is so similar to the last contest, I'm going to make the executive decision and go with the Asymmetrical Design Challenge. Contest should be up shortly.

Design must evolve with time. We have seen an incredible evolution in design over the past twenty years. Technology sky rocketed and allowed us to build curvier shapes and more appealing surfacing. Car designers have become far more creative with the knowledge that almost any shape, form and size is possible to create with our current technology. It is now up to you to design a car that slaps tradition in the face and step quite clear away from what consumers have accepted as the norm. Design an asymmetrical car for the future, a car that will pass all boundaries, turn all heads and most of all, flow as a design in a challenging yet fresh movement into design.

Good luck designers!!! This contest will end on August 17.
Also, don't forget to post your development sketches and ideations in the Contest Development Thread (http://www.carspyshots.net/showthread.php?t=16571)

Looks like i'm first then!

Well my entry isn't very flashy, like most of my recent work isn't lol.

I tried many ideas, mainly sports cars and some clarkmans, but in the end I am submitting a quirky japanese small car. I thought hard about which car companies would do an assymetrical production car and came to the conclusion that it would either be Citroen or a japanese brand.

I went with Daihatsu, as they are a very small player and can afford to get it wrong as all of their cars are niche sellers anyway. This could potentially be sold as a Scion aswell.

So, my Daihatsu Sirion...

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/adythesaxoman/car%20drawings/daihatsuback.jpg

It's only the details that are assymetrical. Wanted to do an assymetrical shape, but my skills aren't up to that yet lol.

Cheers TS..nice work..I like the fact that the Arrow generates a retro look when you look at it head on..but any other rear view would convince you that its a sporty little brat..but then again, the side is a meeting plac of both worlds with the sweeping lines placed futuristically and the rear wheel covering going back in time..nice...real nice...I m just curious here ok..the windscreen in the front sweeps down all the way to the bumpers rite..??..so also on the side and the rear?

Heres my entry:

BMW M2 Design Study

The M2 is simply a design study. Using the 1 series platform it is in essence a 1 series coupe alternative with M3 inspired design. The styling hints at a smaller version of the current M3 but taking it to a more radical and extreme level. The asymmetrical design elements are infused together to create a balanced look as asymmetrical design can unbalance a cars styling. Each front light cluster is moulded below an "eyelid" that forces it into an aggresive stare. The roof features an offset panaramic roof that lies above the drivers side. The rear is offset to one side but keeps a balanced profile with symmetrical light clusters and diffuser that holds the twin pipes in place. The M2 is designed to look production plausible even with asymmetrical design elements.
Even though the M2 is possibly seen as just a different looking version of the 1 series coupe its the engine that differentiates the two. The M2 will feature a 2.0 Twin turbo producing 196KW on the rear wheels with a dual clutch semi auto gearbox.

After seeing the cool enteries, this is kinda silly. The Iota [ my own made up brand ]. A mini city truck that can seat 3 people [ 1 on the drivers side and 1 behind the passengers side]. Each wheel is run by an electric motor, the passenger window slides in slots to open and those holes on the rear sides do have a purpose. And sorry about the rear window. I really didin't define that too well. Plus the scan washed out some of the color.

That forum really left a bad mark... a lot of the members made comments that are sooo degrading...the only thing I could think was...theres information and disinformation...informed people make good comments...disinformed people make a wrong one and then correct them...what about the people in between?!!

anyway...cheers to you Swizzle!...Ciao!...pretty long message huh...sorry..i can get sensitive at times...hehe..

Here's mine:

The AXIS Advanced Study One (ASO) is a design excercise which radically rethinks the automobile as we know it. With the global population on the rise and more drivers taking to the streets the automobile MUST evolve. The ASO is Environmentally Friendly, Efficient and Safe. Utilizing MAGLEV technology the ASO is faster, quieter and smoother than the traditional automobile. Capable of speeds up to 110mph, the ASO is designed to use a specialized road network which will reduce traffic congestion and with a fully automated battery-powered electric system there is zero emissions which will in turn reduce pollution.

Due to the elimination of the combustion engine and complex transmission systems, the ASO manages to evoke an aerodynamic design forged from lightweight composite materials and aluminum reinforcements. Asymmetrically shaped electrochromic glass is used to control the light transmission into the ASO cabin where passengers will enjoy all the amenities found inside a traditional automobile as well as a bevy of next generation technology.

Although it is designed to run on an specialized road network, The driving experience is not lost. The ASO is controlled by drive-by-wire technology, allowing the vehicle to be steered by a force feedback side-stick in the centre console used in conjunction with throttle and anti-torque pedals.

Wow..Axis..that is one awsom concept with great potential..powered by MAGLEV would mean..that the round things that resemble wheels are actually the field centres is it? Neat..though 1 major flaw would be the lack of asymmetrism...
Hey Axis, an out of the box question..I was looking into developing an electric vehicle as well...and I was looking into the different forms of technology available...So was wondering if you knew anything about LiFePO4 battery packs...Solar panel integrated cars...etc...I know I am vague here..its because..I know very little..anything would help...

Okay comments so far:

Prodigy - Great intergration of asymmetry. I think it looks production ready too which is great! You have improved so much, and your design is by far the most creative and in line with what this contest entails. Nice stuff!

DreamersMystique - Welcome to CSS :) . Quite a challenging first contest wouldnt u say? Yours is probably worthy of being put into a star wars movie haha :) very futuristic and an complex looking structure. I like the colors and sharpness of it. My onl.y critique would be it lacks asymmetrical design elements even though the wheel placement sets it off asymmetrically.

TS-Design - very cool looking car. Its quite rounded in shape which is fine, i like how you have kept the light clusters in the same place as different shaped lights could and does offset the balance of the design and is highly unpractical. You have tackled the topic well and just like prodigy have really shown alt of asymmetrical design elements. High five :)

ElementW - wow :) insane looking car. Its got some complex surfacing ! Also very asymmetrical which is good because thats what im voting on - how well the designer has intergrated asymmetry into his design. Yours however is far from subtle :) great creative design

AXIS - As much as i like the design, very sleek and futuristic, it lacks asymmetrical elements. I can see the glasswork is offset to one side but thats about it. Its great work but you havent produced something that ticks off all the boxes in line with the topic. A shame because its well rendered and thought out (besides the asymmetrical part) . Perhaps a different view would have done it more justice?

NelsonDesign

Well I am not really into Asymmetry, but Martin convinced me through our routine Challenges together. Of course it had to be at the last minute though ;).

Not entirely satisfied by it, and that perspective view was insanely difficult to draw because of the asymmetric cabin.

Hope you like it though

lol AXIS, I like the name you've given mine hehe UAHSC, pretty catchy.

PRODIGY- Extremely Japanese, which I guess is good for a daihatsu hehe. Very detailed like all of your designs, it's just not really catching my eye though. Good job.

dreamers- Very sci-fi (that's a good thing in some cases, bad in others) Perspective is a bit off, but that is not what I am rating people on. ;) good job

TS-Design- A bit complex overall, but that's just me. The rear of the car is very well thought out, the front could use some work. Nice job

mrfdesign- Great sketch as always. The design is not my favorite of yours, but you just have to forgive me because I am not a huge fan of asymmetry. Great job.

ElementW- You're always coming out with crazy designs, this is great. I feel this one might just be a little too much though, it's almost hard to tell what's going on. Good job

AXIS- Cool render, cool body. Lacking just a bit of asymmetry, all I can see here is the rear window. Great work

And here's my result...

2- Mrfdesign
1- PRODIGY

Heres my votes:

Prodigy- 3 great use of asymmetry. Cute looker

TS-Design - 3 well thought out and used asymmetry in a well balanced form

NelsonDesign - 2 not as well balanced as the top two here but good effort nontheless

ElementW - 2 wacky looking car :) . Very complex and thus it only gets 2 points. Love the colors !

DreamersMystique - sorry no points . Yours is creative and radical but as with the others who recieved no points from me , lacked the asymmetrical design elements asked for in this topic. But a good effort from u.

AXIS - Great looking car. But with very little asymmetrical elements and that is simply why i have given you no points :(

Okay then, so time to wear the sorting hat eh?..
Well, I have to tell you this, this contest was indeed an eye opener and the entries have been simply fabulous! And, voting for the best is indeed the hard part.
Here goes:

Nelson Design: I liked your design best, though the entry was a hurried one, your idea was brilliant. You made a good looking car that made sense, incorporating a good looking amont of asymmetry. Neat!

Prodigy: Great design, really good work, theres nothing that made me go..WOW...maybe taht was the only thing that put you on the 2nd rank in my list. But hey...Gr8 job!

TS Design: Nice Concept, but has a lot of impracticalities, like the windscreen that is going all the way down. But nice sketch and great looking car. Cool looking car!

ElementW: The Lota is not a bad design, but it kind of makes me feel like it belongs to the Looney tunes or something, but thats not the reason for the rank, the reason was that I just didnt understand it, there was a lot of symmetry here and there, that I coulnt figure out the car. Nice job though.

And for Axis and mrfD, not enough symmetry but great looking vehicles, I have to say!

As for the ranking I am not sure how you people do it...but I will put it with the best on top

4 - TS-Design = Brilliant ideas on your design. I particulary like the way the flont glass flows into the hood. The whole design flows and looks great. I'd buy one if this were real!

3 - mrfdesign = Glad someone did a BMW, and yours looks gorgeous. It would be cool if this were on sale instead of the 1 series coupe, the design just works. And because it's a modern BMW, you don't even think twice as to why it has an assymetrical design.

2 - Element W = Wacky, different, individual, awesome :) For some reason the front reminds me of an Isetta bubble car.

1 - NelsonDesign = I like the ideas you have with this car, but it doesn't seem to flow for me. Props for trying a different offset cabin idea, really good idea and very hard to draw (I tried and failed..will post development sketches soon) . I also don't see much Audi DNA to be honest. Sorry for sounding a bit harsh, I do like your design though.

dreamersmystique: Welcome to the forums :)

Completely out of the box thinking, very futuristic! A bit too extreme for my liking.. as you may have noticed all my designs are a bit tame lol. Hopefully someone will give you a point.

AXIS: As with dreamers, your design is very futuristic, and too extreme for my liking. It reminds me of vehicles from that old 'Wipeout' game on PS2. I also see more assymetry on your idea sketches that you posted, something that wasn't replicated on the finished product so well.

Nelson - 2, really nice presentation, with a lot of cool sketches. The final rendering could need some work, but you definetly got the concept right.
Prodigy - 4 - This is my favorite I think you have really captured how to make a production ready car, that is different from the normal by being assymetrical, but still having the normal car look. great.
Mrfdesign - 3 - I think this is great too, your sketching ability and understanding of BMW's look works really well. The assymetrical part isn't there as much as Prodigy. But great anyways.
TS-design - 1 - I think your presentation is really cool. The design is also pretty good, I think it could use a bit more work, but overall cool.

Dreamersmystique - I think this is the most futuristic definetly. It looks like something from Star Wars, and must have taken a lot of time to do.
ElementW - This is indeed the most creative of them all. You have really pushed the design, and made it something totally different. You always have your distinct style which is cool.
Axis - I must say your rendering skills are sublime! The design is also really cool, the only thing missing is some more views and maybe some sketches. But you really have made a cool design that could be developed to something cool.
