I hope this turns into the C30, as I'm done it already. Almost no work today - a lot of people are gone the day before a long weekend.

Yeah - actually I think NS is one of the provinces with the least holidays. Boooo.

Combined with the last 4 weeks of rain we've had, I'm considering moving.

An updated C30 borrowing cues from the S60 concept. I did some airbrushing on the sides to add some of the curvaturve of the concept, removed the black cladding and enlarged the wheel wells a bit. The front and was completely airbrushed around the lights from the S60 (as it was wider and the C30 is taller). The grille is a bit out of place, but I wanted it to be a production car and wanted room for a license plate.

As for the grillework under the licencse plate - I was going to change it, but I ended up liking what it looked like after I airbrushed overtop (the rectangular central opening I found looked like it mimicked an intercooler's shape, so I kept it). I changed it took black plastic though to reduce the front's visual height a bit.

The DLO is basically unchanged, although the tailights have been reshaped a tiny bit, and recoloured.

Volvo C30 facelift (sorry about the quality GIMP is having issues recently and my laptop mouse is starting to die:lol:
Wow speedstick looks great,I was gonna use the S60 concept front aswell but used the XC60 concept, yours has come out better than mine:)well done.

Yours looks a bit more production friendly - I never thought about using the XC60.

Above front 3/4 view rendering is my entry, a 5-door C30. Besides adding two more doors, I also gave it the latest S80's grille, with Volvo's new corporate logo. I've also updated the headlights from S40/V50.

S2 - 4 Points
Top marks for the job - I'm just not crazy about the look I guess. Too "normal" for a hybrid. Plus it also kinda feels like it's been done already, with that electric C30 concept from a couple years ago.

BryanRC - 3 Points
The look in good, but there's a few quality issues. The most obvious is some slightly messy airbrushing around the headlights and the seem leading from it to the wheel well. There's also a bit of a jagged edge along the lower opening up front. The grille also seems to be a little off kilter, like it needs to be rotated like a degree counter clockwise. The rims are also slightly off colourwise - they're a bit orange from the source pic, and the C30 we worked from is quite blue. And that rear rim looks slightly angled backwards. Sounds like a lot of ripping it apart, but I do really like how it looks. It looks like how an updated production C30 would look.

TheophilusChin - 5 Points
Top marks as always. Looks flawless. Like the matching brake calipers!

blackstripe - 4 Points
Love the idea! Kinda reminds me of that Kia Soul truck thing. And I think Fiat made something like this? The work on it is well done for the most part. But I'm giving it a 4 because I don't really think this can function in real life... The rear roll bar looks to be outside/behind the roof so I'm not sure what the roof would look like in place. The folded top looks like it should be wider, like you should be able to see it beyond the headrest through the window. The pillars behind the doors are also very thin - they don't look like could support much, and almost make it look like you had just cut the roof off at the doors. Maybe if those rails/roll bar were a little further forward and lower so they meet the front cab slightly under the roofline. And the folding top was in front of this, and a little further back. Then I could see it folding overtop of the structure.

speedfreak_77 - 5 Points
Nice as always. To me it looks like a microcar (like the Polo) that slots in at the bottom of the Volvo range. New Volvo cues are nicely integrated and unique at the same time.

Porsche-Power - 4 Points
Very nice as well, but only 4 points because Theo's is nicer. Sorry! No changes up front and the rims (they look a bit dark for the chop) place it behind his.

mucus - 5 Points
Looks really cool - a Volvomino. The truckish, SUV based front end really ads masculinity. My only complaint is that the opening containing the fog light looks light - like it isn't an opening but flat black plastic. I suppose in a production car it probably would be blocked off with plastic, but they usually try emulate a grille or something. That and the rear end doesn't quite seem to follow the profile of the heavy curvature around the rear wheel well.

phantomex - 3 Points
Not bad. Some slight brushing quality issues in the rear-most pillar area (taillights, next to the windows). Also looks like the rear windows should be one pane of glass, not having to fit into a door. The roofline is a bit bumpy too. That and overall the look isn't too attractive to me.

accurick - 4 Points
Very good quality, but it looks a bit tall or stubby or something to me. Not very sporty looking. I do like the look of the Volvo-less grille though. Kinda looks like a Scion with out. Also - the highlight in the grille bars looks too sharp, like you can sorta see the logo was removed. Or were you implying a crease in the bars? That's a very small detail on a very good piece though.

DoMiNo - 5 Points
Looks really cool. Love the roofline - very Seat, and also very Saab. The reflections on that rear pillar let it down for me though. They're kind of confusing, and the upper highlight looks too harsh.

Iqo' - 3 Points
Your work is getting much better! Only giving this one 3 points, and the changes aren't all that drastic, but it doesn't look too bad. Don't really like the blue shadow though - if it's simulating blue lighting from underneath the car, then there probably wouldn't be that much shadow. It's kind of a visual oxymoron.

I thought we were supposed to write little reviews?

Well FWIW, Speedstick, your comments were very helpful, so I appreciate you taking the time.

I thought we were supposed to write little reviews?
I thought reviews are optional, no?

3: S2 - Clean, but i was expecting a bit more design details
5: Speedstick - A modern intrepetration of Volvo's new design language
2: BryanRC - The idea is nice, but the execution is still messy
5: TheophilusChin - Volvo should made this long time ago
4: blackstripe - Wacky idea, but i find it interestingly cool
5: speedfreak_77 - Awesome design, love it
4: Porsche-Power - Quite similar to Theo's but i'm a bit puzzled why the car ended up on ice
0: mucus
2: phantomex - Sorry but i'm not feeling the BMW's nose & tall-ish roof
3: accurick - Love the roofline, but a bit smudgy
5: DoMiNo - Good to see a Skoda can be this sleek
2: Iqo' - i like the big wheel/low roof combo

Speedstick - 5
quality work

BryanRC - 2
nice improvement. but sorry for your quality.

TheophilusChin - 5
top quality as usual.

blackstripe - 4

speedfreak_77 - 5
top work as usual.

Porsche-Power - 4

mucus - 5
nice~! im about to chop it into an ute. but i dont have much time. glad to see u do it.

phantomex - 3
still looks volvo-ish. u need to make the roof lower.

accurick - 3
very nice. but i loved to see if u remain the logo on the grille.

DoMiNo - 5
theres no way i could give u less than 5. very very creative and good quality

08-07-2009, 02:21 PM
Opps - I didn't know they were optional.

08-07-2009, 05:49 PM
S2 - 3 - I see where you're trying to go here but the stretched front and rear doesn't really do the proportions any favors. I know fairings are also one of the obvious aerodynamic aids but they are not the most aesthetic.

Speedstick - 4 - Top quality chop, even if I don't like the alien look of the front. The front Fender bulge also sees to be slightly off, but even that is only just nitpicking. (Also as much as comments may (or may not?) be optional, I greatly appreciate them, thank you.)

BryanRC - 3 - The ideas are good, most of the issues I have are with the quality, most noticeably the front end and the rear wheel.

TheophilusChin - 5 - Looks great. Manages to be a sporty hatch, yet very grown up and mature at the same time.

speedfreak_77 - 5 - Great looking hatch, particularly liked the great implementation of the tweaked S60 Concept parts.

Porsche-Power - 4 - Its a great chop, but too bad Theo did one too! Would have liked to have seen a larger image though.

mucus - 4 - Another great chop - loved everything from the front end to the deep character lines. Not too sure on the color, and how the car would work as a ute though, as it is a bit small. Perhaps an extended tray would have helped here.

phantomex - 3 - I'm sorry, but I'm not exactly sure hat is going on here. Where do you imagine this would fit into BMWs lineup? It has an oddly low nose, and a large greenhouse. Some quality issues regarding the base of the far side a-pillar, roof and front fascia. Don't really see any BMW design language in this chop at all (fronts fascia, character lines, greenhouse etc.), might have worked better as another brand?

accurick - 4 - Cute coupe! Particularly love the badge relocation - reminds me of a WALD mod.

DoMiNo - 5 - Awesome work. Love the roof/window line, though the far-side a-pillar should be blacked out, if visible at all? Looks hugely aggressive, and the wheels match great. Headlights look a tad large and would have liked to have seen sleeker wing mirrors, but again, that just nitpicking.

Iqo' - 3 - Very custom chopped car look with the big wheels and low roof. Looks very odd without door handles though. A little bit too clean, and how does one get in? The patching covering it up is also still visible. Still not a fan of the light tinting, or the ricey neons. Not that there would be a shadow under the car if the underside is lit by neons though, as someone mentioned, but the main concern for me here is that its there at all. Quality is improving, you should start changing the car more.

08-07-2009, 09:08 PM
2 S2
Not a bad chop but I would've rather seen it less changed from the C30. All the mods are fine, but just unfeasible given the small numbers it would sell in.

5 Speedstick
Probably one of my favourite chops of this contest. Very nice modifications for a new C30. Front lights look a bit too morphed but it looks well overall.

4 BryanRC
A slightly more production ready version of Speedsticks chop perhaps? Nice mods and your work is improving. Shame about the rear wheel proportions.

5 TheophilusChin
Perfect. The five door conversion looks fantastic and the updated grill and headlights work brilliantly. Rear headroom might be a bit cramped though.

4 blackstripe
Very cool idea, nice and creative! Really nice colour change and the rest of the more SUV orientated mods are well suited. Brave background change too!

4 speedfreak_77
Very nice work! Do you need criticism? I do however dock you one point for not changing the weird shading on the B pillar.

4 Porsche-Power
Firstly, really good background change! Add some reflections and it would look super. Chop is very good too! Dark wheels are nicely done.

5 mucus
I really love the colour change on this! Works surprisingly well. Pickup idea is a bit weird but the rest of the modifications are too nice.

3 phantomex
No doubting this is creative but it's just a bit too weird for my liking. Roof doesn't really work in my opinion. New headlights do work very well though.

5 accurick
This wins big on creativity alone! Would make a really nice competitor to the 1er Coupe. The wheels look really nice and the reworked front end does too.

5 DoMiNo
Very nice concept with a nice execution. The 'brushed components look very nice and the new roof works very well. I would prefer darker headlights though.

4 Iqo'
Another really nice improvement! Probably not your most creative work but the work is nice and clean. Not sure about the blue neon effects though.

08-08-2009, 12:00 AM
Not to repeat what's all ready been commented on, here are my thoughts on what could be improved.

S2 - 3 - Wheelbase seems too long,the upper black works well,nice mirror housing.

Speedstick - 4 - Nice changes.Looks like it has oil leak.

BryanRC - 3 - Would make a nice update.

TheophilusChin - 5 - Left side of grill doesn't look right.

blackstripe - 4 - The folded roof should have been behind the back support.

speedfreak_77 - 5 - Needs more shaddow under the wheels.

Porsche-Power - 4 - Slightly over saturated, liked the background and the reflection.

mucus - 5 - Great chop.

phantomex - 3 - Would have worked better as a 2 seater smart rival, and had a bigger rear pillar.Original idea.

accurick - ? - Modesty prevents me giving 100 points.

DoMiNo - 5 - Skoda's Scirocco?, looks better than VW's. Bonnet flute needs some highlighting on the right.

Iqo' - 3 - Shading on lower door looks over done.

08-08-2009, 04:02 AM
Oil leak? And messages must contain 10 characters? It wouldn't let me simply say, "Oil leak".

08-08-2009, 06:03 AM
S2 - 3 - Interesting concept, very sleek and purposeful, but the innovation was dampened slightly by the ReCharge and DRIVe concepts.
Speedstick - 5 - I feel like maybe the C30 would get a little more love here in NA if it were this swoopy. Wonderful work.
BryanRC - 3 - Similar concept to above, so I really like it obviously, but the execution is still a little rough. You're improving though!!
TheophilusChin - 5 - Technically perfect and a no-brainer for production. So basically business as usual for you.
blackstripe - 4 - certainly the most fun of all the entries. The interior and top arrangement seems a little off to me, though. Great color.
speedfreak_77 - 4 - beautiful chop but it just looks a little pudgy to me. Nice GTI fighter though.
Porsche-Power - 4 - Another nice 5-door treatment, and nicely done, but the wheels and/or stance throw it off a bit.
mucus - 5 - Beautiful! The rear of the greenhouse cuts off rather abruptly but other than that spectacular work.
phantomex - 2 - A pretty clean chop, and props for doing something a little "out there", but it's stylistically incoherent.
accurick - 4 - Very nice spiritual successor. The grille and roofline could be cleaner, though.
Iqo' - 2 - A little cartoonish, other than that not much done. take some risks! :) You're better than you think you are, and you can do more interesting work.
