There is simply no denying icon status to the beloved Mazda Miata (aka “MX-5” aka “Roadster”), the simple but devilishly-fun sports car single-handedly responsible for reigniting a passion for purist motoring. Now in its third generation, the Miata retains the title of single best-selling two-seat roadster of all time and has been commonly mentioned in the same breath as some of history’s most adulated sports cars.

Largely inspired by the original Lotus Elan, the Miata’s development team adhered strictly to a mantra of jinba ittai—“rider and horse as one”—in an effort to create one of the most precise, confidence-inspiring, and grin-inducing sports cars the world had ever seen. Their efforts succeeded, to say the least, and even in its larger, more comfortable, and more powerful third generation, the Miata remains one of—if not the—best handling and most rewarding cars in its price range.

But the hype surrounding the Miata is not what it used to be; the perennial Car & Driver 10Best award-winner is still every bit as fun as it has always been, but exciting new contenders and changing consumer preferences have dimmed the spotlight over Mazda’s iconic little roadster. On the occasion of the original Miata’s 20th Anniversary, Mazda has decided to stun the world with a fourth generation car that will move the storied nameplate in a bold new direction while strictly maintaining the purity of purpose--jinba ittai—that made the Miata such a stunning success to begin with. Your task is to design a dramatic new Miata that will put it at the vanguard of a second “roadster revolution.”

This contest will close May 18. Best of luck designers!!!

Domino, just your beautiful contest description makes me want to take part this time and since my exam season is coming to a close, i'll try my best to do so! :)

It would be nice to do this, but I am really busy with school work and already have a design project I am working on. I like to focus on one.

I'm excited to see who will reinterpret the Miata (let's drop the stupid MX5 crap...it's a MIATA!!) and capture its essence without doing yet another slavish reinterpretation of the original. I am also looking for someone to come up with a Mazda design language that does not rely on garish faces and lots of lines on the profile. This will be a challenging contest and I am excited by what our talent will propose.

V6 please.

I dunno swizzle... the point of the MX5 (Miata) is to have a lightweight car with a smallish motor which will be well balanced... no V6 viable for this model, me thinks! Started sketches as soon as I saw this up a few days ago...

The #1 problem for the Miata is that it is a great platform starved for some real power. NOT having a torquey V6 as an option is dumb. Balance schmalance. If it can't dust a Camry then it has a power issue.

Agree with Opp lock, the point of the Miata is to be a balanced good handling car and that doesn't make sense with a heavier V6 up front. I-4 or bust I must say as well.

But I mean, why not the powerful turbo I-4 from the MZ3? :] Hope to see some awesome entries guys!

How about a rotary? Two Mazda institutions unite in one glorious, torque-free, oil-guzzling package? Eh? Eh? Anyone?

How about a rotary? Two Mazda institutions unite in one glorious, torque-free, oil-guzzling package? Eh? Eh? Anyone?

LOL!

My point is that it's time for the Miata to grow some chest hairs and move beyond being the cute secretary convertible look that its simple and balanced styling--that has never been advanced--has lent it.

Honda got the performance envelope sort of right in the S2000 (even though the biggest issue was the high-strung 4 cylinder)...too bad they let it dodder just like the NSX.
While the Saturn Sky is not the best sportscar ever made, it definitely trumps the Miata for style.

I'm looking forward to some clean sheet designs this round and not the 911 syndrome where one generations is virtually indistinguishable from the previous as Mazda has done so far.

Here's my entry. It's a bit bigger, more curvaceous, more simple in some ways while more complex in others.

Some perspective issues and things, but overall, I am happy with the way it came out.
Hope you guys like it!

Nelson: You broke the mold. The Miata needs a new look. Yours is an example of the fresh thinking that the Miata needs. Good work. I like the detail of the side and the "show car" pillarless windshield. I'd squish the air intake on the nose, perhaps necessitating a slight lengthening of the nose. Very handsome design.

Given that the original MX5 cribbed its lines from the Lotus Elan, I'd love to see some TVR wildness show up.

Ok, here we go! I tried to put in as many design cues of Mazda's concept cars. I think the grill should have been a tad smaller though...

ElementW....BRAVO!

Gone is the secretary car/hairdresser car that the MX5 is and in its place is a stunning and aggressive vixen that draws Mazda's new look without looking cartoonish as does the new Mazda3.

10/10 home run.

another brilliant entry!!~

Element, we took very similar approaches. I will be posting mine shortly--unrendered, unfortunately.

DoMiNo

As I mentioned above, I took a similar approach to ElementW, loosely incorporating cues from Mazda's recent slew of concept cars, but purposefully shying away from too much of a straked "Nagare" look. The Miata's beauty, IMO, can be in large part attributed to its simplicity, so I didn't want to go too far over the top, but at the same time I felt that the Miata needed an extra dose of aggression to shed that ever-present "chick car" stigma.

For power, I envision the 2.3L DISI Turbo from the Mazda 3 MPS. With weight-saving measures and a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, what a sweet combination that would be. I'm partial to soft tops myself, but for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses, I think a folding carbon fiber hardtop would be an awesome touch.

The enduring spirit of the original meets a bold new style to carry the Miata forward and keep it at the top of its class. As a former Miata owner myself, it's exactly what would get me to buy another one :)

ElementW that is PERFECT for a new MX-5!
NelsonDesign - although i LOVE it i think it would look perfect as a small Jaguar roadster and not as a Mazda
DoMiNo - WOW! Same comments as for ElementW's design, this is a perfect MX-5

As a side note, can we also create a contest for a possible Ford version of the MX-5?! i WOULD LOVE THAT

Very nice, Domino, very nice indeed. I like the aggression you put into it as well as the addition of real power under the hood. Mazda's boring excuse for low-powered Miatas has always been the silly notion of "balance" when in reality they were just being cheap. The MX5 needs some brawn and in both cases, you've delivered.

All very good stuff so far. I've drawn 4 ideas out in neat so far, but i'm not 100% happy with any of them. My trouble is that IMO I don't think that any new MX-5 can top the original for design purity. I've tried a modern look, an RX-8 inspired look, an evolutionary look... The one i'll probably enter retains the classic shape, but with interesting details. It looks very stripped down and basic.

Probably post it tomorrow, along with loads of drawings i've done recently of MGs and Rovers which i'll post in the design section.

This is my rather unconventional-looking entry. With its distinctive shape and unique details, you certainly won't mistake it for a previous Miata. The wheel design is inspired by the original Miata, and the whole design of the car moves upwards towards the rear, if you know what I mean. Without any further ado, here it is...

heres my entry: -- Mazda MX5/Miata --

My MX5 will come with a new 1.4 Turbo putting out 114KW, or for the purists a 2.0 Naturally aspirated petrol pushing out 124KW. My design is suppose to be aggressive as well as very flowing. I tried to make the Miata more ''manly'' and muscular than the current and previous generations. I do realize that the MX5 is an icon and maybe its recipe should not be tampered with but i thought it needed some steroids ;)

So far ALL entries have been amazing, just goes to show 3 things:

1. CSS designers are AWESOME!
2. Mazda had something truly special going on with their recent concept designs and it woud be a sin if they left it for something so generic as the new Mazda3
3. The MX-5/Miata CAN look super 21st century and 100% true to its character without sticking to super-evolutionary

It good to be back! I had a great time sketching after such a looooong time. :grintoothless:

So here's my Miata (MX-5)! :D The small black strips just below the lights, to the sides of the main grille are the LED fog lights. My entry is a mixture of Mazda's current 'flow' design language and also a more 'straight edged futuristic' design which i have used to set the MX-5 apart from the rest of Mazda's current concept lineup. Hope it works! :)
This has surely been my quickest sketch uptil now. And its my first roadster ever!

4. - DoMiNo: I think you have captured the essence of the original Miata, with subtle clues of the Nagare design language.

3. - VexedandGlorious: Love the agressive stance as well as the surfacing. Would love to see a different treatment for the grille and headlights though, they seem to clash with your well thought out streamlined design.

2. - Mr. Burns: The beltline is a bit high, but I see a lot of the character in your line drawings which seem to have gotten lost in the final drawing.

1. - ElementW: A radical shift from the usual understated Miata design without straying to far from the Miata I.D. good job!

Everyone brought something unique and compelling to this contest; the hardest part was simply deciding whose new direction was the best fit for the Miata. Really awesome job everyone!

3 - Mrfdesign – this design admittedly fell under my radar, at first; looking at it again there is just a sheer wildness to it that I find immensely cool, if not traditionally attractive. It’s very in-your-face which I believe is crucial to make consumers notice the Miata. You didn’t bow to tradition but took a very bold new route and in my opinion it paid off.
3 - ElementW – Looks production ready! Your design strikes a wonderful balance between traditional Miata and Mazda’s concept car styling. It’s not gimmicky or over-the-top; it’s clean, it’s obviously a Miata, and yet it’s very fresh and visually interesting. The blacked-out rocker panel gives it a very athletic stance and the face works well.
2 - Lamboman – I appreciate yours as by far the most futuristic entry of the field. Like mrfdesign, you gambled with a totally different new look that would give the Miata head-turning appeal (at the obvious risk of agitating the Miata purists). There are some technical issues (the wheelbase is too long, as is the windshield) but your intent comes through nonetheless.
2 - Knihc2008 – there is something so dynamic about your sketches and these doodles are no exception. My only wish here is that you had the time to polish this design. The front and rear are wonderful but what makes this design IMO are the proportions and stance, which are simply perfect (especially in the bottom-right sketch); there is a taut, muscular, crouched-and-ready-to-pounce look about it that I love.

I can’t stress enough how hard it was to leave these entries out!! The downside to great participation is that inevitably you can’t include all the entries you wish you could (which in this case were numerous!).

NelsonDesign – A very nice car with a classic, almost retro look to it that I feel would be better suited to a British roadster than a Miata. It is a clean break from the current style, which I appreciate, but having no discernible Mazda cues it is just a little hard to imagine.
Cosworth – Interesting little car but the proportions indicate a Fiat 500 or Mini Cooper competitor, not a slick little roadster. If you lengthened and lowered it a bit the car may take on a sportier roadster feel.
Dsgnr – A wonderful render as usual but IMO the most evolutionary of the designs. The face looks great but aft of the A-pillar there is not much to distinguish it from the current model; I was just hoping for a bolder departure. But again, beautiful presentation.
PRODIGY – Kudos to you, Ady, for taking a risk on this one, but the face is just not for me. The rest of the car is very nice (though I’m not sure about the blacked-out rear panel) but the front is either too dated or too futuristic for me… it’s kind of hard to tell really :P
Mr. Burns – Like dsgnr, your presentation is gorgeous, Burns. The render is mesmerizingly beautiful, simple as that, though at times it overshadows the designs and makes it hard to distinguish details. The concept sketches help, in this case. It looks like a car that could be on the road now, but again like dsgnr’s design it simply wasn’t as much of a departure as I would have hoped, and the face has a “cuteness” to it that wouldn’t go far enough in ridding the Miata of its current image. Still a beautiful car, though.
Vexed&Glorious – Like knihc, this is a wonderfully-proportioned car with a wicked stance. The front would have been stronger had you given the grille and lower intakes a bit more character (more in line with the aggressive headlights), and by contrast the sides seem a bit overdone; I’m not sure of the point of that dark swoosh on the side and am kind of unclear on some of the surfaces.
AXIS – I love it, AXIS, it is a tight and sporty design. But the bumps behind the headrest are a little too reminiscent of the Solstice/Sky twins and the whole vehicle looks a little tail-heavy. The strakes along the side are also a bit prominent—giving it the look of an upside-down Puma shoe, almost—but I say that realizing that, were you to render this design, they may have been subtler. This design could be the basis for a spectacular new RX model!

Gonna have to keep this brief i'm afraid as I am about to head off to work and I can no longer use the internet at work.

4 - ElementW = Excellent shape and details. Moves the design on without losing what made the first gen great.

3 - dsgnr = Shape is very evoultionary, but I love the details. Probably the most likely look that the next gen will have.

2 - Vexed&Glorious = Funky design which breaks the design mould for the miata/MX-5 but without losing its spirit.

1 - Mr. Burns = detailing is superb, shape not so much.

I'd like to comment on everyones but am rushed. All I will say though is that all of the entries are excellent. And NelsonDesign - yours looks liek a modern day Jaguar E-Type! Looks great!
