The unfortunate demise of the Celica in 2006 (2005 in most markets) left <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toyota</st1:place></st1:city> without a proper sports car (with the exception of the MR2, which followed the Celica into oblivion in 2007)—a void that the company has yet to fill. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>
Your task is to reward these hopeful enthusiasts with a new Celica that will (1) live up to its heritage as Toyota’s well-rounded sports coupe, (2) set a new precedent for youthful, exciting design the likes of which Toyota seems to have forgotten, and (3) reaffirm Toyota’s commitment to fun-to-drive cars. Design a Celica to do battle against the best sports coupes from Japan, S. Korea, Europe, and North America—one that will do honor to Toyota’s sports car heritage but also exemplify the company’s forward-looking ethos of continuous improvement and innovation.<o:p></o:p>

My vote--not that it is a huge consideration:nono::devil1::naughty:--will be the one that captures the iconic original Celica and ages it forward in much the same way the 2005 Mustang "aged forward" the 1964.5 Mustang. The Celica I was amazing.

This will be a HOT contest.

For some reason I hated the last gen Celica design, it was overdone and dorky to me. Here's my entry:

And random doodle (not entry):

awefully crude, and probably easily out matched, but doing it killed the boredom. I hope you like :)

Wow, that was quick! It's what it'd expect from a new Celica, but it's nicely proportioned, good looking, and has some nice details. :)

I wanted to design something bold, but reasonably easy on the eye. The above is what resulted.

Can you record that and send it to me via email please?

As for this contest, i think its a brilliant subject and since the Celica is much loved by almost everyone in here (stark contrast to other models from the brand) i think it will be among the best so far!

Doing Simon Cowell is easy. You begin by saying "If I'm going to be honest..." then you follow it with a sneering insult followed by a reference to a karaoke bar on a cruise ship at 3:00 am off the coast of Majorca Spain.

"If I'm going to be honest, your entry was utterly forgettable and horrible. It reminded me of what a snot-nosed boy scout would draw on a napkin in a karaoke bar that his parents had dragged him to at 3:00 am after an evening of utterly prosaic love making on a cruise ship off the coast of Majorca Spain. Utterly a mess."

A little critic would be that it looks too retro for me. Like a 90'ies super car from Toyota.

Wow Nelson, I love it. Every bit of it echoes a different generation of Celica. The space behind the DLO echoes the Mk1, the grille echoes the Mk5, and so on. It's instantly recognisable as a Celica, but bang up-to-date.

He's been on Top Gear and the episode I saw was a love fest. They are absolutely birds of a feather.

Nelson!!!! Great nose and side. The rear is a little Mustangish (not that that's a bad thing in my book). Your car illustrates the styling rupture that Toyota needs to make. A styling break would not be severe enough to end the blandness that Toyota embraces. Yours has sheer simplicity and rightness of line. Toyota's next Celica will have a reptilian face with ginormous headlights and tail lights stuck on as an afterthought.

Very nice ideas so far! It's been a couple of contests since I've participated, so despite not having a whole lot of time I decided I'd better throw my hat into the ring. I know it's pretty basic (and the washed out scan doesn't help) but I'm pretty happy with it all the same.

With my design I decided to evoke the cleaner, simpler style of the 6th-gen Celica, with its double headlights. I continue to find them attractive cars and there's also a little bit of nostalgia to it; when I was a kid my friend's older brother had a brand new, black on black Celica GT convertible that I used to drool over. It was the first car in which I ever experienced 100+ mph, barreling down an empty backroad in Sterrett, Alabama :P

I tried to include a few subtle elements from recent Toyota/Lexus designs, but my overall intent was--conversely--to depart from what I consider a largely incoherent design language. I wanted a simple, striking, somewhat curvaceous car in the vein of the Celicas and Supras of the mid-90s that could set a new tone for Toyota's sportier models.

Some awesome designs appearing in this thread! I'll comment on each one in detail in the voting section, but WOW! They are all superb!

Thanks for all the praise you've given me with my Celica! As you can see I went the retro route. My uncle used to own an old Celica in yellow, with primer spots and rust spots, and black wheels. I thought it looked the muts nuts, and I used to love it when he picked me up from school in it! So that Celica was the inspiration for mine. Except that I made it less notchback to give it more of a Mustang Muscle car look.

This contest has made me wanna go and find one like my uncles and buy one!

I always thought Celica I was styling gold. Its sheer simplicity of form and proportion and its utter lack of adornment for a Japanese car of its day make it timeless. Subsequent Celicas got stranger and stranger. If Toyota took the Celica I and interpreted it as Chevrolet interpreted the Camaro I (i.e. the retro but not really look), they would have their answer to the 370Z...sort of. The Celica I, 2000GT, Mazda Cosmo, and 240Z were designs that were world class in their styling. The entries so far are as varied as the different Celicas, but the original (like the Camaro and Mustang) carry the iconic DNA. Good work all so far.

I always thought Celica I was styling gold.
Agreed, it's a fantastic looking car, uncluttered and handsome. But with every generation, they got stranger looking, like you said, and we end up with the rather ugly Seventh generation.
Anyway, brilliant contest, I'm looking forward to seeing more entries! :)

Here's my final entry, I know this is not allowed, but I didnt change the design, just did another view and put them all together. Forgive the crappy shading on the newer one, I did on paper that had stuff written behind it.

Sorry for the messy drawing, it's all I had time for!

JC Design teams up with Toyota to design an all new Celica, one that harks back to previous Celicas while looking firmly forward into the future. The kickback line, the vent behind the rear window, the rear taillights all hark back to different eras of the Celica saga, but places them on a design that is completely new and modern. The design makes room for the new FR platform that is being produced with Subaru. It has a sharp shark nose up front flanked by headlamp/fender sections designed to look like separate sections, like an old Corvette. The rest of the design is true FR, with a long hood and a notchback coupe design in the silhouette with a short rear deck. The JC Design Celica is at once modern and retro at the same time, and adds plenty of excitement and sport back into the Toyota lineup.

Here's mine.

Toyota is not going to let Scion have all the fun with the boy racer crowd, as opposed to adding another staid appliance to the ever expanding lineup Toyota has shaken things up with the introduction of the radically redesigned all new Celica. The polarizing origami surfaced exterior was highly influenced by elements from Japanese popular culture. The new Celica rides on an all new compact FR platform and is powered by a TRD tunded 2.5l 250hp 4GR-FSE V6. Banking on bringing some much needed youth back into the Toyota brand the Celica is expected to retail around $20,000.00.

Sharp looking entry knich! The front and side look awsome and I also can't help but notice the faded car designs in the background.
Love the side on Mr. Burns entry but the front is not really up to my tastes. The shading looks great, though.
Cool render Axis. Although it starts great from the rear, like Cosworth said, it gets a bit too bulbous at the front.

I wanted to enter, but I hardly had time. Even when I had time and tried to sketch up an entery, I always ended up designing a different coupe.

May i ask how it turns? With the front wheels covered how do the turn?? I can see that there is a cover over the wheels but even if that cover moves with the wheel those covers would protrude outward and could become a hazard on the road. Just trying to see the practical point of the covered wheels.

Wow, I was quite impressed with the participation this time around! Looks like that little extension gave several of you the chance you needed to put something together. Thank you to everyone who contributed; if there's one thing I thought was particularly appealing about this contest and the ensuing entries, it's that no two people had precisely the same vision of what a new Celica should be. Quite the contrary, this stands as perhaps the most diverse group of designs I've ever seen in a single-model contest :D Kudos to all of you...with this amount of variety voting will not be easy.

But vote we must! Same rules as always (http://www.carspyshots.net/showthread.php?t=2363): ten points divided among four entries. Incorrect votes will be disqualified. You're encouraged to leave commentary, as well, and all votes are welcome, regardless of whether or not you frequent the design section. Let your voice be heard!

3 - knihc2008 - Very sharp design, love the nose-down stance and the long bonnet. Simply very good looking.
3 - PRODIGY - A very handsome design, it has some solidity to it, and some neat touches too.
2 - ElementW - The design flows very well, very curvaceous, and well presented.
2 - DoMiNo - As above, the design flows very well. It looks agressive, but has some curves.

Mr. Burns- Love the surfacing very much! It looks aggressive, but the grill may need a little work. I would love to see this on the road.

Cosworth- Some cool ideas, especially in the front. I think, by judging your older stuff, you could have done something more interesting in the side. It's good!

PRODIGY- Very very very cool Prod! It's so aggressive and blends modern and older era better than mine. The only thing I am not fond of is the fact that it comes off LOOKING cheap, like a Dodge or Nissan. I don't know why though.

Domino- Nice curves there, fantastic sketch too. Great looker. May not be exciting enough though (not that mine is any more exciting lol)

knihc2008- Very nice man! Retro and aggressive, nice long hood.

AXIS- LARGE face there, makes it aggressive and I like that. I don't think the colors go well but that's not what I'm voting on. More revolutionary than a lot of the other entries.

Vexed&Glorious- I like it a lot. It is very 90's but I don't know, it's cool. I don't think the skirted wheels would be much of a problem, all you have to do is figure out a way.

ElementW- Cool looking, I can tell that. But some of the surfaces are a bit confusing and I can't really make them out.

mrfdesign- You've done WAY WAY better! This is good and cool looking but you could've made it more aggressive, sporty ETC.

MartinEDesign- NIce job on the render man. The car is cool, but maybe not Toyota Celica- E enough lol

Sorry to the guys who didn't get votes but this was a really tough competition with excellent entries from everyone.

4 - Domino: It looks like the most thought out and production-ready design and especially love the little details included.

3 - knihc08: Love the proportions and the retro-ish, modern-ness (?) of it. Maybe if it was presented a little bit better you could have been sharing the top spot with Dom! Good work nonetheless!

2 - Prodigy: I really can't believe how much you've improved since you first joined this site! I like the inspiration for your design and its clearly represented here.

1 - Mr. Burns: Dude your pencil work is nothing short of amazing. Its soooo clear that you understand the surfaces well but its even better that you can put it down on paper in such a way! Seriously everything looks so liquid and the headlight detailing is amazing too. The only thing that dragged you down from the rest is maybe that grille. I know you were probably going for something out there or new but I'm not sure if I like it that much. Not saying its hideous tho!

Excellent entries guys and good to see that participation has picked up considerably from last time I was here...

Sorry for the delay. Hectic life at the moment, so CSS is being neglected.
