04-21-2005, 02:22 PM
First ones a Toyota Crown, Xj and some rl put together and the second one...I dont even know what that is. Anouther chinese rip-off, a good looking for the first one but a rip off

Is nothing sacred anymore? What is the corporate motto in this place? STEAL, STEAL, STEAL... and when possible, STEAL some more.
They took a phantom and slapped a grill and some lights to emulate a chinese made russion zil limousine from the 50's that high level chinese officials preferred:

and isn't the other onw a toyota crown? I know Toyota has ties to FAW (who makes Hongqi), but I was under the impression that it was only in smaller cars. FAW doesn't have any ties to BMW right?

A few more pics of the concept, seen at coches espias:

There must be more than a few BMW executives screaming bloody murder tonight.

BMW isn't going to lie down for this one, I'd imagine. Wonder if the chinese government will actually start listening to the complaints of all these companies, or force other governments to sanction them.........

How do they dare to show this car in public? aurguably the most provocative copycat car ever, this is really an insult to the automotive design world.
04-21-2005, 08:36 PM
I am speechless. Simply speechless. Rolls-Royce are probably fuming at this situation. Like JBlair, I really hope for some justice. And soon.

04-22-2005, 07:30 AM
THAT CAR IS AWESOME!
Its such a great immitation, its better than that Lincoln limo with the Phantom front end.
If this car was put into production, I would seriously consider importing one, as you would look like a total VIP for little money!
I think its great, and there is nothing RR can do, as it just looks a little like the Phantom, and not a direct copy.

I think side is practicaly identical... only windscreen angle is substantialy diferent. and what a shame that they copied it.
cause if they would develop design from that ZIL, car could be almost as grandious an prominent as real Phantom but they would have something original and unique. nobody did that to ZIL, eve russians didn't. and if you remember that fantastic Volga V12 concept... you know what I'm tlaking about...
but what I was talking in my post on top... I LOVE IT! cause I can realy see some top Chinese party official beeing proud as peacock, driving arround and excepting foregin delegations in this fake isn't it ironic?

The windsheild looks too steep on the Phantom, not to mention other details like a thicker B-pillar and a smaller C-pillar. If this is just a Phantom then they've done some significant work to it.

04-22-2005, 03:25 PM
what?
chinese are riping again..that's a Phantom rip... very accurate rip also

04-23-2005, 03:22 AM
btw, the chinese phantom headlight looks like a Lancia car..

04-23-2005, 05:24 AM
I actually like the Maybatch rip off...
But OMFG, how dare they rip of a Phantom!!!!!!!!!!!!

04-23-2005, 09:10 AM
i dont see a problem with this, RR have no need to worry, not as if this car is gona steal sales from them
04-23-2005, 05:32 PM
I personally love it even if it does have the same proportions as the phantom.

It would be interesting to know wether this will go into production and if it will what powertrains will be used. Does anyone out there know?

I love their sense of humour! Now I can finally afford a Rose R(o)ice.

04-25-2005, 03:03 PM
I agree with most of what has been said - but if you look at what inspired the designers, this car seems to me just another [debatable] piece of rétro design... (there is definitely more than a hint to the RR - although it is not the only "logical" inspiration, they could have chosen others: so this is in itself a design choice)
Have a look:

Source: (http://www.chinabob.com/Bob%20...r.htm)
Some of the most criticised bits are there already (little round lamps included), so I would not be TOO harsh towards the Chinese.
Having said that, I do not like nor agree with their copying existing designs [and I mean bit by bit; see Chery QQ). On the other hand, inspiration from what already exists it is what everyone "new" to the automotive world has done so far, and will probably continue doing...

I actually like the Phantom lookalike, even if it does look like a Phantom copied on a low budget. Am I alone in thinking that it actually has a more elegant headlight design than the British car its copying?

04-27-2005, 11:20 AM
I like it too... but I realy dont understand why did they have to take Phantoms grille??? car would be as good, if not better looking, if they had used the shape of that ZIL grille. and then we would not have this discussion, because all other elements are alredy there on that ZIL, just in slightly other proportiones than on Phantom. just look at that POBEDA concept... you can see as much brithish shapes in it as you want, but it still has it's roots firmly in 1945 GAZ Pobeda and is undoubtably developed from it.

I don't know what you guys are getting all excited about. Sure this car is based off of the Rolls Royce Phantom, but only a complete moron could ever mistake it for one.
Companies copy/mimic the products of one another every day. Its not just in China, and certainly not just in the auto industry.
A design patent, which is what one of these cars would have to violate to stop it being sold in North America is very difficult to enforce. Its not like a functional patent where you say "my device does this thing that no one else has ever done before". A design patent can be something very simple, like a unique doorhandle shape, to something very complex, like a whole car.
In any case, to contest a design patent in court, you have to prove that your design was directly copied, which isn't an easy thing to do. Simple changes to a design are all that is needed.
In this case, the car has completely different headlights. That alone is enough to dissuade a lawsuit. If Rolls decided to persue legal action, a good lawyer would have pages and pages of measurable differences between the two cars.
The Chinese have been producing "replica" products for many years. They know how to get things done without getting sued. I know, because I deal with them every day.
Knut.

04-27-2005, 06:43 PM
One other thing.
In a court fight over a design patent the most debatable part is proving that a person could reasonably mistake the offending product for the original.
Again, this is where a good lawyer is worth every penny.
Knut.

That grill has some special meaning to it you know, I've read before. It is not a full copy, but yes basic design elements are ripped off. But I would think this car would suit the Chinese market very well, for those who misses a Rolls Royce, they would go for this. The Red Flag (I think this is its name) has been/ and always will be the car for the high level government official.

08-17-2005, 10:51 AM
i have just one thing to say, mitsuoka. theyve always been kings of making copies of cars, and making them uglier.
