With land at such a premium, space efficiency is paramount, and has become one of the central tenets of Japanese society and industry. Nowhere is this more evident than in the tiny but ingeniously practical “Kei” cars that comprise a large portion of Japanese domestic vehicles. These cars are designed specifically to maximize practical space while minimizing total size, and are ideal for navigating the narrow streets of the country’s dense urban jungles. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
The importance of these small vehicles is such that the government tightly regulates their dimensions and engine output; Kei car drivers, as a result, avoid costly taxes levied on larger vehicles and help keep down the inevitable crowding in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Japan</st1:place></st1:country-region>’s populous cities. The downside of these constraints and the obvious desire to maximize utility is a plethora of practical but utterly boring box-shaped vehicles that are nearly indistinguishable from one another. With some notable exceptions (Dahaitsu Copen, Subaru R1, Mitsubishi i, to name a few), Kei cars have come to epitomize monovolume monotony. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Your task is to break this mold. Let loose—relatively speaking, given the size constraints—and design a Kei car that is as stylish as it is practical. Japanese consumers—some of the most car-crazy and style-conscious in the world—demand a new breed of Kei car that will suit their [I]desires as well as their basic needs; show them that size doesn’t matter, and that a tiny car can have every bit the character and presence of its larger brethren. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Restrictions will remain largely in place, as they did in the Battleground Kei Car contest: a maximum length of 3.4 meters, max width of 1.48 meters, max height of 2 meters, and a maximum engine output of 660cc. I will however waive the power restriction of 63hp (47kW).<o:p></o:p>

THIS CONTEST WILL END FEBRUARY 22. Good luck designers!!

Hi Dom. Just wanted to know whether this contest idea is yours since it couldn't be Steve's given his current situation. Please dont be offended by my asking this. :)

The Kei Car contest idea was suggested by Steve after winning the previous contest, as is our usual procedure. He decided the topic and I made the banner before the situation unfolded, so the topic stands.

Not to butt in or anything, but what happened? Is it serious?

Go to the Lounge and read the Petition Thread.
Wonderful contest btw, I'll have my entry once I get some sketches rolled out during class ;)

Any entries, guys?
BTW, I like the contests better without the voting - they're quicker, and it's a surprise when the contest comes up. :)

I found this contest rather difficult, mainly because of the strict limitations that come with designing a Kei Car. This is the best I could do... a simple, quick sketch - but a no-frills design, as a Kei Car should be. It's called the Suzuki One.

It's been a while since I've posted anything up! I saw this design contest and a Mazda minicar immediately came to mind, so this is what I came up with. The usual Mazda design cues fit in nicely with the tight spaces that the Kei car demands, allowing for almost a hunkered down look with a shark-like nose for that "zoom-zoom" look that all Mazdas should have. It's not too crazy or anything, just a (imo) stylish Kei car to get Japanese motorists from point A to point B in a good looking car. Hope you guys like it, comments are always appreciated! Good to be back!

Looks brilliant knihc, definitely one of your cleanest sketches. The design is extremely attractive, although I think the glasshouse may be too tall (or perhaps there's not enough metal under it)

Are we leaving this contest open a bit longer to allow more entries, DoM?

Oops, no that wasn't my intent; for some reason I had the 23rd stuck in my mind. I will close it as soon as I get a little more time to set up the voting.

Thanks for pointing that out Cos!

Here goes my entry,

The Mazda Go-Go is a 60hp spunky fun to drive vehicle for the hip image conscious Tokyo set.
And no kei car would be complete without a myriad of trim levels, Mazda plans to release a 70hp Mazdaspeed Go-Go Zoom-Zoom as well as a partnership with Sanrio for a special pink Hello Kitty edition Go-Go Friendly.

Well what we lacked in participants was more than accounted for in creativity :D Wonderful ideas, guys, and thank you for taking part. The time and thought spent creating them is obvious.

Now it's time to vote on which Kei Car you feel makes the most of its restrictive criteria. Same rules as always (http://www.carspyshots.net/showthread.php?t=2363): ten points spread among four entries (i.e. points must be assigned across all four, in this case). Incorrect votes will be disqualified. You're encouraged to leave commentary, as well, and all votes are welcome, regardless of whether or not you frequent the design section.

Here are the entries in the order received:

Cosworth (http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7906/1cosworthga0.jpg)

How do contestants vote?

Comments first-
Cosworth- one of your better entries man. The size looks right for a kei car. Better line work and integration of bodywork so thumbs up for that.

Prodigy- hmmm its got a crazy looking front end that kind of makes it a bit ugly in a way lol. Very cool though. Its the most daring entry for sure.

Knihc- very clean drawing. Size looks a bit big for a kei car but the sheer quality of your work makes up for it. Very mazda, very cool and i like it :)

axis- looks very much like knihc's design. You should've chosen a different manufacturer because it simply looks too similar.

Votes:
4- knihc

2-cosworth

Ah, good question. Would 8 points spread among the remaining three seem fair?

any similarity is purely coincidental considering I had my sketch done way before knihc posted his entry.

Thanks for the comment, mrf! :D My votes:
6 - knihc2008 - A fantastic design, very well presented. Brill. :)
3 - AXIS - A really cool car with some awsome details.
1 - PRODIGY - Sorry mate - I really liked the quirkiness your design, but the other two were just so good! Great idea to do a Mitsuoka, though. :)

Looks like us entrants are giving 10 points rather than 8 then! So i'll follow suit if that's ok DoMiNo? If not, let me know and i'll edit this.

4 = AXIS - Great to see a sketch from you rather than your usual polished entrys. This is a funky design with lots of great details that keep things interesting.

3 = knihc2008 - Nice clean shape and details, and the styling fits well with the current Mazda range!

3 = Cosworth - Funky design, with a really cool looking front end.

wish more people would have entered this one!!

Axis - 4, I think this is the best design, with cool design elements in the front, just tops knihc2008's car.
knihc2008 - 3, A close call, and I think yours is really true to Mazda's design language, I like your front grill a lot.
Prodigy - 2 - I think this is pretty cool too, but needs some work in the appeal section.
Cosworth - 1 - A little too boxy and old school looking for me.. Also your sketches could use some more details.

Axis - 5 Nice sporty and techno-ish take on Mazda cues. It is a very attractive little car but keeps the normal Kei car proportions in a very sporty manner. Nice!
Prodigy - 3 Very cool design and very funky! There are a lot of details in this design that are very innovative and new and put together, makes for a very new-age looking car. However it does need to be more... pretty?
Cosworth - 2 Good effort but a little too boxy and 80's style.

Thanks again to all entrants and of course to everyone who took the time to vote and lend their feedback. Despite the small number of entries I appreciate the enthusiasm and am especially happy at how fast the voting took off. But without further ado, let's move along :D

AXIS - 27
PRODIGY - 22
Cosworth - 16

Congratulations to knihc for the winning entry! Please think of the topic you'd like to see for the next contest and get back to me. And hopefully it will work out so that more of us will have the opportunity to participate next time.

Thanks again, designers, great work!
