Very competitive field. I'll start by predicting the ten finalists from that list, for now:

Audi A4
BMW 1 Series
Hyundai Genesis
Honda Fit
Jaguar XF
Mazda6
Nissan GT-R
Nissan Maxima
Pontiac G8
Volkswagen CC

And based on the criteria, the A4, Genesis, and Maxima would be my selections for the short list.

Audi A4
Honda Fit
Hyundai Genesis
Jaguar XF
Lincoln MKS

My top 5. A4 for the engines/transmissions, Fit for the "timeliness" factor, Genesis for the significance to the brand and the segment at large, XF for symbolizing a HUGE turnaround for Jaguar and being a terrific drive to boot, and the MKS for its similar role in revitalizing a stale brand.

Mazda6 and Maxima are solid cars but nothing I've read about them indicates that they're particularly groundbreaking. G8 would have been a pick for the value factor, but I think all in all the Genesis has it trumped in that regard, and from what I've read the G8 has been, well, a bit of a flop :(

My Top 3:

Honda Fit / Jazz - Reliable, decent looking, reasonably pricied, small on the outside but big on the inside - what's not to like?

Jaguar XF - An A6, E-Class or 5-Series for people that have a bit of imagination. Proves that Jaguar can do modern.

Nissan GT-R - C'mon... it's scary fast, got more technology than a Japanese electronics store and is great value for money IMO.

Acura TL - no way
Acura TSX - when pigs fly
Audi A4 - nice but no cigar
BMW 1 Series - the coupe? don't see it happening
Dodge Challenger - err I've yet to see one on the strret
Honda Fit - I like it, plenty appearing here on the streets
Hyundai Genesis - perhaps but long shot
Jaguar XF - just give it the reward, no need for other contenders :devil1:
Lincoln MKS - nah
Mazda6 - always a chance
Nissan GT-R - a beast, in my finals
Nissan Maxima - nope
Pontiac G8 - looks good, but when I saw one passing a week ago, I had a thought that it would make a nice saab 9-5 with the appropriate styling changes
Pontiac Vibe - it doesn't look bad, reminds me of the toyota verso, might be the rear lights
Toyota Corolla - hell no whats this doing on the list
Toyota Matrix - see toyota corolla
Volkswagen CC - not in north america

of course these are just my opinions :naughty:

I'd be surprised if the XF didn't win. It is by far the most significant vehicle to its brand. The Genesis probably deserves to win, but the antiHyundaists will see to that that does not happen.

Lincoln, Genesis or Jag... if they are going to "most significant for brand" vehicle... MKS sells almost double of what Genesis does, and since Tata does not show Jag numbers, probably a lot more than Jag too.

If they go with most significant for general public, Fit or Corolla, becuase thats what general public buys high mpg vehicle is probably going to get it this year

I agree with the posts above, I think it'll come down to the Genesis and the XF. I'd say XF all the way ;)

I am sorry, didn't Motor Trend award the CAMRY its car of the year award last year or two years ago?

Because If I am correct, receiving the Motor Trend car of the year must be SUCH a prestegious award.

A Camry.... Might as well just name a pickup truck the supercar of the year.

The winner, and it won't be a close contest: the 2009 Honda Fit.

The reason is simple: the Fit has good fuel economy, and when it comes to interior space flexibility, nothing comes close.
