View Full Version : Car for a World Leader Design Contest

05-29-2008, 11:44 PM

It’s tough to characterize a head of state by the vehicle in which they ride, but it’s undoubtedly true that choosing vehicles befitting of prominent politicians, royal families, and even religious leaders is no easy task. A brief glimpse of the Presidential motorcade, the Queen’s bespoke limousine, or the “Popemobile” is as close as many people may ever get to their revered leaders and these vehicles in and of themselves should bear the standard of the nations they represent and the dignitaries that they carry inside. From <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">1600 Pennsylvania Avenue</st1:address></st1:Street> to <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">10 Downing Street</st1:address></st1:Street>, from Red Square to <st1:place w:st="on">Tiananmen Square</st1:place>, the figures that represent us in the international community deserve vehicles that showcase the pride, industriousness, and power of their respective peoples.
<o:p> </o:p>
Your task, designers, is to create a car for the world leader of your choice, be they royalty, politicians, or prominent cultural figures. Let your imaginations run wild! Will it be an imposing, black, armored behemoth? A long, elegant, and luxurious limousine? Will it be dripping in creature comforts, or stark and eco-friendly? What message does your car send about the person inside? It’s up to you, so get thinking… I hope we have excellent participation once again!!

This contest will close on Saturday, June 14. Best of luck to everyone!!

I'm going to love this contest, I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

05-30-2008, 10:10 AM
I haven't entered a contest before, but I'm thinking about taking part in this one. I don't expect to win, or come anywhere close really, but I'd be intrested to see what people think of my design, and how I could improve it. I haven't got a scanner at home, but I'm sure I'll be able to find one knocking about somewhere in town. Either in the library, or at school, or a mate's house. Even if I don't find a scanner and don't enter the contest, It'll be good practice for me. I have a design in mind.

P.S. Can anyone give me some advice on what to use for my sketches? All I currently use is plain old A4 paper, and a HB pencil.

05-30-2008, 05:49 PM
That's pretty much all you need man. If you want you can take it to the next level and use more than just A4 paper and pencil, but its not necessary.

05-30-2008, 11:26 PM
I feel like we've done one like this too

05-30-2008, 11:35 PM
We have....like two years ago.

I suppose it goes without saying that there can be no repeat entries :P

05-31-2008, 06:56 PM

My gosh, have I really been on this forum for that long? haha

05-31-2008, 08:30 PM
hmmm was hoping for a more interesting contest but will give it a shot

Very nice Audi R8, the shoulder line looks very stately and interesting. The specs you have given it would make it a hit on todays market.

06-08-2008, 09:34 AM
Just one question... how would it be able to manage 82.9mpg?

06-09-2008, 05:13 PM
Just one question... how would it be able to manage 82.9mpg?

It has a special hybrid engine which has specially designed valves and pistons so that it uses as little fuel as possible. It also has electric motors in each wheel which power the headlights when in use, when the lights are not in use the energy goes to the resovoire in the engine.

Heres my entry:

2009 Maybach. Simply named to carry the manufacturers legacy alone. The new car is slightly bigger than the old 62. The design is inspired by the Maybach Exelero Concept and it's sleek aerodynamic look as carried through. The options list is unlimited literally and paint jobs are both single colors and two tone options. The cars luxurious interior features many new technologies to make the occupants ride as pleasurable as possible. Built in TV and laptops in the back seats mean the travelling business man can work whilst on the go. It's stylish lines make the new Maybach a fine choice for world leaders who want to be noticed.

Looks great Mrfdesign, definately a lot of Exelero in that concept.

Mr. Burns
06-11-2008, 03:28 AM
Here's my entry:

I hope you like!

06-11-2008, 05:37 AM
Nice Mr Burns. Im loving the shading. It just bothers me that your rear end is very short, is it meant to be? Perhaps a small introduction to your car is needed :)

06-11-2008, 05:47 AM
Audi_R8 - nice clean design, however this is more of a photoshop than an actuall drawing isn't it ? In any case, it has quite a chunky appearance, the jag like metal strip in front of the front door needs to blend with the shoulder line. The car has quite a Honda feel about it, maybe its the light cluster shapes im not sure. Good job

Mr Burns - very recognizable as a Caddy ! And thats my problem with your entry, although its brilliantly executed in technique, its just looking like another Caddilac, cos they all look so similar at the rear ! Besides that, i like the tail pipes - really aggressive. The body seems quite small though, almost like a hatch type sedan crossover. But then again im probably wrong so thats why i asked for an introduction :)

06-11-2008, 08:58 PM
Im re-posting my design as i have re-designed it. Hope it looks better than my last one... I think it does.:woot2:

06-13-2008, 08:59 PM
Here is my entry.

The Daimler for the royal family. While Gordon Brown has to make do with Jaguars, the Queen gets this plush hybrid 3.0 Daimler. Posher than a Rolls Royce and not available to the General public. Even the Sultan of Brunei can't buy this!

06-14-2008, 03:22 PM
I will take part on this contest once again since it is one of the themes I wished for a contest, and I've always had a silly idea for it. If I don't post it today, I will do it tomorrow.

06-14-2008, 05:04 PM
Anyone else wish for an extension? This is a good chance to be creative, guys! Let's see some more entries!

06-14-2008, 08:46 PM
I'll make an entry for this one. tommorrow is fine with me

The next State Limousine of the President of the United States. Whatever Air Force One represents in the sky, Lincoln One does it on the road. It is intended to look as typical American as the Statue of Liberty and as iconic as the Golden Gate Bridge.

This Ford F-350 based limousine features all-wheel-drive as well as all-wheel-steering, and is equipped with the latest telecommunication and security technology, such as a large LCD screen, internet access to all relevant government servers, and a communication device. The clue of the concept is the big bulletproof display cabinet in the middle of the car which has the same format as a calling card. It can be accessed through a door next to the driver's seat. In case of an emergency, the upper part of the rear can be raised to create a second exit. The glass walls can be darkened continuously, and there are also retractable curtains. The height of the cabinet allows the President to wave to the people while standing inside of the car. The interior furniture can be exchanged. The picture below shows the option with a single comfort seat.

For Lincoln, building a state limousine is very attractive since it doesn't cost much more than building a concept car, but it gains a lot more publicity than a concept car on a single motor show. It's not yet clear whether Lincoln One anticipates any styling cues from a future Town Car.

I must say i dont really agree with these extensions. I guess its fine once in a while but every contest? Its a bit unfair when some of the guys get their stuff in on time and others dont. I just think it would be fair for everyone if contests were closed on their due dates regardless. I know some of u are busy but who isn't??

Bentley Continental Streamline hybrid
The combination of aerodynamics and efficient drivetrain packed in ultimate luxury for diplomats and just plain rich folks of the world. The car has a back-to-back seating position. The rear facing back seats allow for a fully sloping roofline helping the car achieve a cdx of 0.20.

Equiped with a front mounted Audi 4.2L V8 running on atkinson cylcle and producing 300hp driving the front wheels and two 100hp electric motors driving each of the rear wheels. Total of 500hp.

Using a battery pack mounted between the front and rear seats, the strreamline can operate on EV mode around town for 80miles. on the highway it switches to the atkinson engine. During acceleration and in slippery conditions, it uses the motive force of all drive wheels.

06-16-2008, 04:37 AM
That looks great, taskbearer. But the side and rear reminds me of an old Citroen.

06-16-2008, 10:36 PM

Thank you to all participants for the creative entries. I was really holding out for better participation but those who did post had some incredible ideas and beautiful executions. Best of luck to all in the voting, which will be up shortly.

Some great entries this time round, here is my voting:

4 - Mr Burns
3 - The Future
2 - Audi_R8
1 - Mrfdesign

06-17-2008, 09:35 PM

06-18-2008, 03:25 PM
4 - Taskbearer. Elegant design with lots of green credentials which todays world leader needs to show how much they care about the planet. Is this design for the Queen or Gordon Brown? You've created an interesting take on the Bently 'look' and i love it.

3 - The Future. Very bold, brash and in yer face.. just like Mr Bush lol. This befits one of the most powerfull men on the planet - the American president.

2 - mrfdesign. Fair play to you for defending your design so much, and it shows you've thought your design through. I think Maybach is the right brand for the German premier to use, and this looks cool. One thing i'd change would be having a straighter window line, but that's a personal taste thing.

1 - Mr Burns. Very sharp, with lots of presence. It would suit the president.

Audi R8 - Sorry you didn't get points from me. It is a case of me simply prefering the other designs and ideas. Your design is very good. I think however that a counties leader would support his or her countries existing brands rather than having their own unique brand, but then again at least it would be the most exclusive brand out there!

06-18-2008, 04:31 PM
4- the future
3- mrfdesign
2- Mr. Burns
1- taskbearer

06-18-2008, 05:11 PM
4-mrfdesign : well thought out design. very elegant and tranlates the exelero's lines into a real sedan with huge presence.

3-Mr.Burns: clean and sharp. although it still looks like a blown up CTS the deatiling at the back is quite interesting

2-Prodigy: The integration of jaguar XF cues into an uber luxury sedan is very well done the grille and headlights do look imposing without looking out of place with the smooth flow of the rest of the car

1-the future: What a car. It looks like a rolling oval office. very american and deserving for its purpose.

06-21-2008, 03:54 PM
4 - Mr Burns
3 - The Future
2 - mrfdesign

Audi_R8 - 1

06-22-2008, 04:55 PM
Wow, this was tough!!!

4 - the future: Truly an epic vehicle, man. Not only is it imposing, but it's also very innovative and you clearly put a lot of thought into how to best suit the very unique needs of a President. Interesting features, a lot of presence, and a thorough explanation. Well done.
2 - mrfdesign: A very elegant entry, and also very versatile as I see this being the vehicle of choice for dignitaries from many different (wealthy) places. You can read more of my thoughts in the thread you created, but suffice it to say this is a fitting successor to some of the more extravagant VIP rides of the past.
2 - PRODIGY: Another very elegant car, this time distinctly British. I love how you've integrated the trademark Daimler grille surround (though the grille itself could certainly be more interesting) and, like the future, how you've tailored it to a specific world leader. Certainly nicer looking than the silly-looking Bentley that was commissioned for her Golden Jubilee. I really like the headlights.
2 - taskbearer: A wacky-looking car in some ways but very clearly designed with efficiency in mind. The perfect vehicle for our time, simultaneously luxurious and powerful enough for a world leader while being environmentally-conscious.

Mr. Burns - A beautiful car and a really nice pencil render but aside from being a Cadillac you gave us no indication of how it fits the brief. It is stately and intimidating but in styling and in size could be just another Cadillac; there are no visual cues to suggest it is special, and you provided no brief, explanation, or name. Great car but I just wish you'd taken the time to explain.

Audi_R8 - I suppose there is nothing wrong with creating a new make for this particular challenge but unfortunately that leaves your vehicle with a little less sense of history than the others. It's a neat car and in terms of size and presence seems to fulfill the requirements, but the design is a little garish for the car of a public figure... if it were black it may be much more fitting :) Still, great work.

Voting is now CLOSED. Thanks to everyone who took the time to lend their opinion and analysis. The entries were all fantastic, which of course made choosing between them tough. Here are the results:
