Most of the concept cars were already seen at NAIAS, but there will be some new, such as:

I'll definitely be at this show, and at least twice, as I usually do every year. I usually attend the first Saturday (day before Easter) and an additional day during the week when there's less of a crowd so I can get closer looks at the vehicles and displays.

The production Genesis-based coupe from Hyundai is one highlight, as well as the next-generation Nissan Maxima. We'll be hearing of other premieres beforehand. Of course, I'll be glad to get through Chicago and Geneva before NYIAS!

it typically opens to the public the day before Easter sunday, at least for the past few years it's been that way.

hmm if the first day is the saturday before easter then i'll definitely make the weekend after that, as i come home the tuesday after easter. if you want to go earlier in the week than later, go on easter if you arent Christian. There is substantially less people there to make it easier to see the things.

63Bonneville
01-31-2008, 05:42 AM
Yes, for quite some time it had opened to the public during Easter weekend, and Easter falls early this year, March 23rd. I'm looking at this this way, that's going to be three major shows within a two-month period: Chicago, Geneva and New York!
Also, we just got done with the Detroit show just three days prior to this posting.

Pontiac ST... it that the pick-up derivative of the G8 (a.k.a. Holden Ute)?

Yes. just stick the G8 clip on a ute, flip it to lhd, add some indicators and fix the bumpers, and there you have it.

I also think it's a good successor from the current model, as far as the near-production concept is concerned.

I really don't want to jump the gun here, being we're still anticipating the Geneva show at this point (2/13/08), but I'm wondering of we'll see the next-generation Buick LaCrosse debut here. I know we were misinformed about a Chicago debut.
I'm also looking forward to seeing the new Maxima at NYIAS.

I know that we still (at this point) are waiting on the Geneva show, which looks to have some fine debuts this year, I believe my most anticipated debuts in New York (which is early this year - March 22) are the next Nissan Maxima, production Hyundai genesis-based coupe, Pontiac G8 Ute variant, and Challengers of more mainstream trim-levels.
There may be some more news and announced and surprise concept and production debuts between this post (2/24/08) and NYIAS press days.

I don't know if this is going to succeed the S7 or be built along-side it. There was a couple of articles among the auto-related sites that pertained to Saleen, either expanding or updating.

This www.motorauthority.com article (link below) seems to indicate that Saleen is expanding the line:

It appears that Mitsubishi won't have any global debuts in New York. However, the company is bringing a bunch of concepts displayed at other auto-shows over the past 9 months:

Concept cX http://media.mitsubishicars.com/detail?mid=MIT2008022854866&mime=JPG

Concept i (not really a concept, more like a public interest gauge car) http://media.mitsubishicars.com/detail?mid=MIT2008022854839&mime=JPG

Concept i-MiEV Sport http://media.mitsubishicars.com/detail?mid=MIT2008022854849&mime=JPG

Concept i-MiEV http://media.mitsubishicars.com/detail?mid=MIT2008022854818&mime=JPG

Mitsubishi mentioned in their mid-term business plan that they are planning to release a "low-impact" CUV. It seems quite obvious that they are referring to a production version of the Concept cX (which itself is based on the next-gen COLT platform). That would slot nicely below the Outlander.

Here's some GM news regarding appearances/debuts at NYIAS. It's also stated that Pontiac will have three premieres in New York for 2008. Article link is below (click on or copy & paste):

http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServlet?target=http://image.emerald.gm.com/gmnews/viewpressreldetail.do?domain=2&docid=43957

Three Pontiac debuts, here's a guess (my take):

Pontiac G8 ST, the USDM of the Commodore Ute - a given.
Other possibilities: G8-GXP, G8 coupe based on Concept60, Solstice hardtop... we have within this month to find out!

I can't wait for this show. I want to go twice.

63Bonneville
03-03-2008, 05:52 AM
I can't wait either, of course, Geneva is afoot right now, but the only one I'll attend in NYIAS. I usually go twice, too; the first Saturday, and another day during the week. It's early this year, too!

Also, in regard to my earlier post to Pontiac's New York debut's:

• It looks like one will be the Ute-derived Pontiac G8-ST – a given.

• This article just appeared on www.leftlanenews.com stating that a Targa version of the Pontiac Solstice will appear, link below:
http://www.leftlanenews.com/pontiac-solstice-targa-2.html

• The third remains a mystery, but I would hedge that it's a GXP high-performance edition of the G8, that would be a good thing!

I'm still wondering when the next-generation Buick LaCrosse will appear, would that be in New York, too? We'll have to wait and see.

we actually have 1 week, not 2.

its pretty funny how whenever people are so sure audi is debuting something at a show, only to have it be a no-show, they automatically say its debuting at the next show, only to start the process again.

Next week from this post (3/11) will be the press days and likely some embargos lifted from manufacturer's debut/studio pics. Any chance of the next-generation Buick LaCrosse debuting in New York?

I'm also eager with the three Pontiacs!

One note: Speaking of Pontiacs... Today (3/11/08) at lunch, I took a cruise by a nearby (to my office) Pontiac dealership, Cerami Pontiac on Rt. 17 South in Paramus, NJ, USA, and I stopped by and walked inside. I went up to a Rep and asked him if there were any G8's on site. He told me that there were none there, and that they will arrive in two weeks or so. He also said that I was the 17th person to stop in and ask that question within a two week period. He said (if I understood correctly) that he has some 11 models coming in, and three have already been sold - sight unseen! I have a good feeling that this will be a hot success for Pontiac like other GM models; Buick Enclave, Cadillac CTS, and Chevrolet Malibu.

03-15-2008, 12:07 AM
from Newsday:
Running through March 30, the show will provide most New Yorkers their first up-close looks at the reborn Dodge Challenger muscle car, the new Dodge Journey SUV, the redesigned Acura TSX, Nissan Maxima, Infiniti FX, Honda Fit and Pilot, Toyota Corolla and Matrix (and similar Pontiac Vibe), the Cadillac CTS-V, the facelifted Mercedes M- Class, an as-yet-unamed pickup truck promised by Pontiac for 2010, the new 400-hp. V-8 Pontiac G8 GXP large sedan and the Pontiac Solstice Coupe.

so if Newsday is correct we are getting the G8 GXP, Solstice Coupe, and the ST. pretty much what we speculated, but now confirmed. and the Pilot debuting will still be the concept.

I was just at the New York Auto Show (NYIAS) this past Saturday (3/22/08), and I'm going again this Thursday, 3/27/08. Many of the new debuts , whether at NY or for this year in general are absolutely amazing and stunning!

• The Saleen Raptor is outstanding and the photos do not so it justice!!! Too bad the turntable/platform it was on was out of commission.
• The Lincoln MKS is large and brilliant in person with much presence the 20" wheel-package adds to it nicely.
• The Hyundai Genesis sedan is truly large and elegant in person and the same can be said for the coupe, only being more low-slung and aggressive.
• Nissan will take your breath away with the GT-R and the new Maxima, Infiniti, as well with the new-generation FX.
• The facelifted Mercedes-Benz SL series is very attractive and aggressive in person, also.
• The VW Passat CC coupe-like sedan was there and accessible to sit inside, very flowing and smooth take on the 4-door coupe theme.
• The Dodge Challenger has true presence and proportions in person, even the base SE-V6 edition doesn't disappoint. True classic-themed American rides!
• The Ford Flex is another unique and attractive ride with a nice seating position.
• The Jaguar XF series stands out elegantly and flowing and garnered much attention.
• Pontiac finally gained a crowd and attention after a long time with the awesome and anticipated G8 series and Solstice targa, what a translation from the 'vert!
• The next generation Ford & Dodge pickups are an outstanding progression.
• The Lincoln & BMW production-close concepts (MKT & CS respectively) were much admired and hold serious promise! The CS (progression from original) showing was a pleasant surprise!
• The Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead thoroughly impresses and has that same locomotive-like presence as the sedans; gotta love those coach-doors! Too bad the hardtop-coupe wasn't there.
• The Mini Clubman is an outstanding addition to the coupe.
• The new-generation Acura TSX is much nicer in person and stands out more that the last-generation, which was on also the floor, the RL's facelift is more striking in person, and the previous RL now seems more anonymous now.
• The Lexus IS-F is really breath-taking, as well, and seriously aggressive.
• The Honda Pilot production-close concept is attractive and utilitarian at the same time.
• A beautiful array of Aston Martins, capped off by the DBS!
• The BMW X6 impresses, has a nice, unique stance and surprising room in the back. The 1-Series is a nice addition on the bottom end.

Only thing missing was that there were no Maseratis on display, and there was only one Ferrari, the F430, perhaps the one that runs on E85.

I may add more to this post later or additional comments later in this thread.

the X6 was roomy in the back, with great head room, but I felt cramped up, but extremly secure
the XF interior was amazing, but a bit cramped for me...

the challenger looked good in person, i like it now...
the CS was a suprise and its amazing so is the A5
but i don't quite like the r8 anymore after seeing it in person, it has this bald eagle like look
the Ac's were and always will be ugly to me...

I wasn't able to get inside many cars because i was carrying my luggae with me...

How about Kia Koup?

exl500
03-26-2008, 04:12 AM
Rambling personal opinion in no particular order:

To the above poster, I liked the Kia Koup. Nice proportions and stance, but not terribly original - it looks a little 1990s.

The XF seems was nice but just didn't wow me. Same with the S5/A5. The XF particularly seemed unresolved an a bit bloated.

The CS, however, took my breath away. Staying with BMW, the longest lines of the evening were to sit in the 135 (which was just perfect in person). The 550 with the sport package still looks great. The X6, on the other hand, not so much.

Toyota is a sea of mediocrity.

The Maxima looks great and out-executes the nice MKS with the same sculptural themes. In general Nissan and Infiniti try too hard stylistically.

I generally do not like trucks, but the Volvo SC60 and the Rover LRX were two of the best looking vehicles at the show

The Challenger looked great, as did the Tiguan, surprisingly.

The USDM Fit looks much, much better in person - more balanced.

The Cadillac CTS coupe concept is pretty wonderful. I don't know if I'd call it beautiful, or even handsome, but it has real hunkered-down presence.

The face-lifted SL is fantastic, especially with the "shark gill" vents.

The Astons, as usual, were the most beautiful cars there.

Finally, when I left there was a yellow Charger Super Bee out front with great graphics, parked with a police car behind it. Is this a production model? (I'm asking, but next I'll go to Dodge's site.)

Thanks for reading.

Quick summary

LOL:
Ferrari stand with no indications except one Ferrari (still, that Ferrari was hot).
Porsche had the Cayenne base trim, GTS, and Turbo all in one line, some guy started talking to me all of the sudden while I was there, and complained about how the Turbo was twice as much as the base trim. I walked away without saying anything.

Surprises:
Ford Flex is actually not very big in person.
A lot of people at the Hyundai stand, which I guess isn't that surprising. Large crowd at the Genesis/Genesis coupe - photos we've seen do no justice.

Cool concepts/aftermarket:
Nissan Forum
Land Rover LRX
Cadillace CT Coupe
Five Axis IS-F
Nissan Forum

Exotics will always be exotics - truly something else. Biggest crowd always..

Regret/Disappointment:
Very little free stuff and pretty ladies :D a lot locked cars :mad2:
I missed the lower level displays; realized only after I had left the convention center :( - VW, Kia, Mitsu, who else did I miss?

against the wall
03-27-2008, 03:48 AM
if its the same as last year you basically missed the trucks and suvs of all the automakers. and maybe ferrari learned their lesson from last year, where their display (in the corner without the narrow walkways) created the gigantic clusterf*ck of people and disrupted crowd flow. the damn crowd was like 6 people deep! i mean, its not ferraris are THAT uncommon (especially if most of the crowd is from the Ny area). too bad i wont get to the show this year, although it doesnt seem that different from last year, aside from the relatively minor (and few major ones) debuts that happened. there really isnt anything that i would spend 40 bucks on to go there for, since most of the stuff is from last year, so i guess I'm ok with it.
