View Full Version : The Billionaire Bazaar: A Car Show for the Super Rich

12-02-2007, 09:55 PM
The luxury high-rises of Shanghai. The shoreline mansions and personal islands that have become a symbol of oil-rich Dubai. The increasingly prosperous avenues of a renascent Moscow. The skyscrapers of longstanding economic centers like New York and London.

These places all serve to remind us that, despite our seemingly endless economic woes, the ranks of the über-rich continue to expand. And with them grows the insatiable desire for exclusive, expensive, often absurd luxury goods.

Some of the most powerful expressions of wealth are cars. Since its inception, the automobile has served effectively as a rolling status symbol, from the days of one-off coachbuilt cars to the modern day excesses that define brands like Maybach, Bentley, Bugatti, and Rolls Royce. However, an increasingly discerning (and ever-growing) group of extremely wealthy enthusiasts has tired of these "mundane" models and the demand now exists for a super-exclusive seven-figure car that can satisfy the extreme tastes of the world's richest, most demanding consumers.

You have been charged with premiering a car at an invitation-only automotive expo in Monaco, a symbol of opulence and the Mecca for wealthy car enthusiasts. Your task is to design the plaything of the super wealthy: a car whose sole purpose is to showcase its owner's immense fortune, to defy common sense, to break all automotive conventions, to define the word "decadence." Be it an all-out, 250-mph supercar, an ostentatious SUV, or the most luxurious car to ever grace the pavement, this car must stand unique as the epitome of conspicuous automotive consumption. It must be equally at home on the Champs-Elysées, Fifth Avenue, Calle Serrano, Eaton Square, or Rodeo Drive; it must suit the needs of tycoons in Seoul, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Sydney, Abu Dhabi, Chicago, and other cities worldwide...a global car in the most perverted sense . Pull out all the stops and let your imagination run wild; what would you want to drive if you were one of the very few richest men in the world?

The tentative closing date for this contest will be December 16th.
Best of luck, I hope for great participation and some very creative entries http://images.blackfalconmedia.com/CSS/smilies/2cool.gif

Awesome idea with pretty much no limitations.<p>I will see how it goes time wise. I might get bored in the library studying for exams, so I will try to throw something together.

Ok I got my basic design ready, just need to touch it up... It'll be up within the next two days. Its a Maserati by the way...

Would you be horribly offended if I did a Maserati as well? I'm liking the design i have so far and I just dont want you to think I'm copying you or something.

12-10-2007, 02:44 AM
WTF? no way man u cant use maserati!!!

nah jks i wouldnt mind at all :p

12-10-2007, 11:47 AM
Mine will be up later. It's a 'Bristol'. If you've never heard of Bristol, have a search.. Bristol are probably the most exclusive brand in the world. There is 1 showroom and the company doesn't let magazines test them usually, the customers have occasionally lent Autocar their cars to test.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more entries yet!

12-10-2007, 03:56 PM
We had a Bristol contest once, actually.

Time permitting, I will be submitting a Bentley.

12-10-2007, 04:45 PM
Sorry, guys I think I'll sit this one out.

12-10-2007, 08:35 PM
can you do any brand, cuz i'm trying to do a TRUE lincoln with out the ford input...

12-10-2007, 09:14 PM
All brands are okay, even defunct makes or your own creations.

12-10-2007, 09:16 PM
All brands are okay, even defunct makes or your own creations.

my own?
*kool aid man voice* oh yeah! this is gonna be fun...

if i find time and get a sheet of paper first though....

12-14-2007, 04:08 AM
So... I take it some people may need an extension? I know it's a busy time.

12-14-2007, 05:18 AM
I'm in the middle of Finals right now.. don't really have anything immediately in mind but I assume other people would like to wait until after finals before they even start thinking about what to draw, as would I.

Mr. Burns
12-14-2007, 09:06 AM
Yep, it's also during finals for me, so I will most likely sit this one out.

12-17-2007, 08:04 PM
Well suffice it to say I've extended this contest a week. So if you fellas find some time, give it a go!

Some of you said you were entering... what happened? I have a rough entry but I don't want to be the only one! :P

12-17-2007, 09:04 PM
Some of you said you were entering... what happened? I have a rough entry but I don't want to be the only one! :P
I was gonna post my entry, but 2 things stopped me...

1)i'm not sure if my entry is good enough
2)I don't want to be the only entry apart from yours DoMiNo... it would be embarrasing having you get everyones vote and for me to get no votes lol.

I may re-work my Bristol sedan and post my entry over the next couple of days.

12-17-2007, 09:15 PM
I need more time, Im a bit busy....

driven by design
12-18-2007, 10:38 PM
I'd also like to post an entry, and have a few idea sketches going, but having a contest deadline right in the midst of the holidays wasn't the greatest idea. If people aren't busy with holiday parties and events, they're busy shopping and/or planning for those occasions, taking final exams, or something else. Me? I'm in the midst of a job transition as well. There's just too much on everyone's plate, and I also have this hunch there are still a few members who haven't migrated to the new board either.

If it were my call, I'd extend this to the first week of January, not because I'm unprepared but because there are so many things happening for people right now.

12-18-2007, 10:52 PM
My main concern is that the contest may just go stale; but if it helps more people participate, and provided it's okay with everyone else, then of course I will keep it open through the holidays.

Mr. Burns
12-19-2007, 04:40 AM
Ok I will guarantee I'll post an entry by thursday night or Friday. My last exam in on thursday, and drawing for this contest will be a great way to relax after it is done.

12-19-2007, 10:03 AM
it's amazing how we all enter the restricted contests but when we're given freedom it's so quiet???
lol well i'l be entering a rough attempt soon

12-19-2007, 10:57 AM
As a real shock to you all, I might be entering this with a big coupe(ish) SUV.

No guarentee, but I will post it as a contest entry or just in the general area should I finish it.

12-19-2007, 03:56 PM
Great to hear, guys! Looking forward to your entries.

12-20-2007, 12:19 AM
i have an idea for a maserati coupe and a bentey interior... are we allowed to post interiors or just exteriors???

12-20-2007, 03:50 AM
I intended it as an "exterior" design contest, but that said, I wouldn't be opposed to you posting an interior design, given the subject matter (I imagine in this case the inside of the car will be just as important--and excessive--as the outside). The important thing is that you must choose the Maserati or the Bentley; not both.

12-20-2007, 07:00 AM
ok then... ill think about it :)

From the world’s preeminent manufacturer of bespoke, high-performance automobiles comes the most powerful automotive statement and a new standard in ultra-high luxury, high performance touring. For almost a century, Bentley Motors Ltd. has provided well-heeled enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the limits of the automobile while ensconced in the very finest of British luxury; the delicate balance between luxury tourer and all-out sports car that has become a hallmark of every Bentley automobile has been reevaluated, recreated, and intensified in the company’s most opulent creation, the new Speed 16.

Discretion and modesty are the only two characteristics that the Speed 16 does not offer in abundance. From the bold, sensually-curved fenders and the uninhibited roar of the exposed 16-cylinder motor, to the endless customization and lavish craftsmanship of the plush, state-of-the-art cabin, the Speed 16 exemplifies automotive superfluity.
Powered by a modified version of the epic W16 motor from its distant cousin, the Bugatti Veyron, the Bentley Speed 16 is expected to claim the title of the world’s fastest saloon by a hefty margin. Instead of hiding the car’s life-force beneath a bonnet, designers have chosen to showcase this modern marvel, exposing it for owners and onlookers alike to admire. No luxury sedan has ever enjoyed such prodigious power and, fittingly, no sedan has ever made such a bold design statement. Controlled by a silky 8-speed automatic transmission, the W16 can be as docile or as raucous as its owner commands. Four separate performance settings adjust throttle tip-in, transmission response, ride height, suspension tautness, exhaust flow, and stability control settings.

The term “conspicuous consumption” is deceptive, however, when describing the Speed 16. Bentley engineers have gone to great lengths to ensure that, despite its great size, the 16 leaves as small a footprint as is possible. A sophisticated hybrid machine, the Speed 16 is equipped with a myriad of new technologies intended to maximize economy while minimizing environmental impact. The Bentley VCS (Variable Cylinder Shutoff) system optimizes performance and fuel economy by allowing the car to switch seamlessly between 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, or 16 cylinder power (only at full-tilt will the Speed 16 be running on all cylinders). Furthermore, under very low performance load, a compact but powerful electric motor mounted at the rear will motivate the car at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour for up to 10 miles, ideal for fuel-sapping city driving conditions.

The Speed 16 is equally interesting in the less obvious details. The dipping side glass highlights pressure-sensitive polished steel door openers which are embedded in the window glass; when the car senses its owner carrying the Speed 16’s smart key, these pressure points activate and can be used to open the trackless sliding doors. Furthermore, they retract with the glass (alternate touch points open the doors when the windows are down). The rear of the car showcases a production first: the world’s only electronic license/registration plate, displayed on an ultra-bright LCD screen. All owner/registration information is stored in the car’s electronic database and may be displayed, as required, on the screen. The display changes as needed if the car crosses international borders. Alas, it is a bittersweet development; the system, developed in concert with British traffic authorities, also allows traffic enforcement officials to simply check the electronic signature transmitted by the car, thus negating the need for inconsistent and often highly-visible speed cameras.

Speed 16 passengers, however, will have every reason to make their journeys leisurely, as the cockpit stands as one of the most opulent in the industry. Through the B-pillarless sliding doors, owners will find a yacht-inspired cabin rich in fine materials and generations-old craftsmanship. An infinite spectrum of fine leathers is available, and swath almost every surface. Those not covered in leather are finished in the owner’s choice of several exotic woods, carbon fiber, titanium, or machine-turned aluminum. State-of-the-art navigation and entertainment systems, as well as a sophisticated and powerful McIntosh-designed audio array, make the Speed 16 a true mobile theatre, concert hall, or office. The interior even offers “dynamic acoustical tuning”, which allows the driver to dial in the desired amount of engine noise from the sonorous W16. Even the headliner is designed to please; finished in suede or a woven cashmere fabric, it hides LED ambient lighting and frames the Speed 16’s massive electro-chromatic glass roof (with variable opacity settings).

No detail has gone unnoticed in what is sure to be the world’s finest automobile. The price of entry into this most exclusive of clubs will most likely rival that of the Speed 16’s Veyron stablemate, and only a few hand-built examples will roll out of Bentley workshops each year. Every buyer will be assigned a concierge who will remain at their service for the life of their ownership. Buyers will be flown via private jet to Bentley headquarters, where their concierge will shepherd them through the customization process. Upon the car’s completion, the concierge will personally deliver the car anywhere in the world and will remain with the owner for as long as he or she needs to learn the ins and outs of their new automobile. Unmatched luxury, technology, performance, and customer service will set the Bentley Speed 16 apart and will solidify its place as the world’s most incredible car.

My headlights are similar to yours DoMiNo. And the overall shape is a bit like Mr Burns's Maserati. Back to the drawing board for me......

Very nice Quattro.

You've expressed your ideas well, no need to worry about the quality. The only thing I would change would be to make it bigger... it seems to be the same size as the RS8.

12-25-2007, 10:29 PM
Ladies and Gentleman, may I present the new saloon car from Bristol. Price of this car is available on request, if you have to ask then you can't afford it. The car is available in the colours of the Union Jack - Red, White and Blue. There are only a few of these cars being made. We aren't going to tell you how many because we never tell anybody anything. What we will say is that we've returned to the Bristol tradition of having the spare wheel housed behind the nearside front wheel. Without further ado, here is the car.....

Well guys, I never had time to 're-do' my design. Please don't think i'm copying DoMiNo's headlights and Mr Burns's profile... the basic shape and details were done long before i'd seen the others. Also, I know the interior is cr** - It's one of my first attempts at an interior lol.
